Welcome to the October 2018 newsletter of the Irish Photographic Federation. I hope you all have had a wonderful summer and for a change, the weather has certainly played its part with terrific long days of sunlight and warmth, which we haven’t seen in Ireland for a long time. We also took a break with our monthly newsletter but as the months have crept by were glad to be touching base with you all again.

IPF Newsletter - October - 2018

IPF
Over the coming months, the IPF will host the remaining events for the calendar year which will include the 36th IPF National AV Championships at Aras Chronain on Saturday & Sunday, 20th & 21st October 2018. Our thanks to Lillian Webb and her AV team for coordinating the event. I attended this event for the first time last year and was very impressed by the standard of photography and sequences accompanied by the audio that certainly adds to the stories and themes.

The IPF Nature Group will host a projected image competition against the Northern Ireland Photographic Association (NIPA) which takes place in the lecture room of the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin, at 2.00pm on Saturday 10th November 2018. See the IPF Website for more details. The National Shield will take place in Palmerstown on Sunday, November 18th coordinated this year by Pat Kavanagh. Following the success of last years event in Limerick, it's nice to move the event around and we look forward to another good entry from clubs across the country.

Also in November, the next IPF Distinctions will take place in Thurles on Saturday, November 24th. The last Distinction sitting took place in September in Carlow.
We welcomed Ray Spence from the Royal Photographic Society who came along to watch the process and how we do it here in Ireland. Speaking afterwards he acknowledged the work that goes into the preparation and the running of the event and was very impressed with the adjudication on the day and the standard of photography.
My thanks as always go to Des Clinton (Chairman) of the Distinctions Committee and the team of people who work to make the event successful. Our thanks must also be recorded to Carlow Photographic Society for their enormous support on the day.

And finally, our very own Lillian Webb has been awarded the prestigious Dobson Henry medal by the RPS AV Group at the 23rd RPS International Audio Visual Festival in Cheltenham. A stalwart in the Audio Visual world Lillian has contributed and being involved with the AV Group here in Ireland for many years. A richly deserved award to a hard working lady who also has been a Council Member of the IPF for many years and the current National Secretary. Congratulations to you Lillian, truly well deserved.

Until next time,
Kind Regards,
Dominic Reddin FIPF
President
Irish Photographic Federation.

AV2018 - report by Lilian Webb,

IPF AV Group Co-ordinator

The IPF 36th National Audio-Visual Championships 2018 will be held on Saturday & Sunday, 20th & 21st October in Aras Chronain Irish Cultural Centre, Clondalkin. Put the dates in your diary now!
As usual, there will be sections for novices, intermediate, club and advanced.
Photo Harmony: In conjunction with the IPF AV National Championships, 2018, we will be holding an Open Photo Harmony AV Competition. The entry fees will be €15.00 for up to two sequences. The minimum length will be 3 minutes and the maximum International of 5 minutes. Among the prizes, there will be a prize for the best Irish entry. The definition of Photo Harmony is as follows:-
Photo Harmony is intended to demonstrate skill in the production and visual progression of still images linked to sound. No words or story with a specific beginning, middle and end are required. The emphasis is on matching the images with appropriate transitions and harmonising them with the sound. Video clips are not allowed in the sequence. The aim is to construct a sequence so that images progress harmoniously in terms of colour or tone and graphic design and that they also harmonise with the sound chosen. It is recommended that the sound and the images start and finish together and that the original ending of the music is preserved rather than an arbitrary fade-out.
Entry forms for both the national and open competitions, rules and conditions have been sent to all known AV workers and will be available on www.irishphoto.ie. Any further queries from ipfavgroup@gmail.com or if you wish to be added to that mailing list to keep you up to date with all matters audio-visual. The closing date for entry forms and fees will be 14th September and for the sequences on 28th September.
Judges are Alan & Bev Tyrer from England. both have attended the last two IPF International AV Competitions and have won prizes for many of their sequences. You will have an opportunity to see their work over the weekend.

Judy Boyle Photography Success

Judy Boyle from Creggan, Crossmaglen has become the first lady photographer in Ireland to be awarded the Gold distinction EFIAP with the world body of photography, Federation Internationale D’art Photographique based in France. Judy was presented with this prestigious distinction at the Eddie Chandler gallery in Dublin last week by the Irish Photographic Federation president Dom Reddin. Judy had already gained the highest distinction in photography in Ireland, a Fellowship FIPF with the Irish Photographic Federation and in the UK a Fellowship FRPS with the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain with panels of her creative photographic images.
To become the golden girl of Irish photography Judy had to enter 150 different photographs of the highest standards, in photography salon competitions in 15 different countries and get an amazing 500 acceptances. Each acceptance represents one of the best images in a photographic salon. The images entered in photographic salons can be of any subject matter and Judy had no shortage of photographic models for her portrait photos with her many nieces and nephews living in Cross. Judy also took many still life photographs and character portrait photos locally and all around Ireland and further afield. Other subject matter for her photos included Irish horse fairs, Croagh Patrick, old derelict cottages, parades and fine art creative photographs. Judy has won over 30 gold and silver medals for the top images in various international photography salons. What an achievement. Judy is a master photographic printer, printing all her own images to the highest standard. She has also represented Ireland internationally on the world photography stage on 17 occasions, the highlight of which has to be in 2012 when she was on the Ireland team which won the best country in the world in both colour and monochrome photography.
Judy is a prolific traveller, going to so many countries to get more different photographs for her EFIAP gold distinction. Earlier this year Judy travelled to Kolkata in India and wandered around the city for a week taking photos of the peoples of the city in their environment. This included a visit by invitation to photograph the living conditions of families in 2 slums. Judy had previously on 3 occasions visited India to photograph the peoples of Rajasthan. Some of her best-known photographs and award-winning images were taken in Eastern Europe with 4 trips to Romania and Moldova. Judy has an amazing ability to communicate with people and put them at ease no matter what nationality they may be and capture that magical decisive moment for an image. Other countries she visited for photographs were Italy, Greece, Cuba, Wales, Scotland and England.
Judy is a long-time member of the Drogheda Photographic Club where she competes with like-minded photographers. With the help of Judy’s photographs, the club has managed to win the top photographic club award in Ireland over 15 times, making Drogheda the most successful Irish photographic club. Judy also lectures to photographic clubs in Ireland and further afield. Judy is also one of the best photographic judges in Ireland judging competitions locally and nationally and internationally. She is also on the assessing panel of the Irish Photographic Federation for giving out distinction degrees in photography. Judy judged the Dutch Super Circuit of photography, one of the top events in the world, in Amsterdam earlier this year.
Judy has lots of support and encouragement in her photographic endeavours from her family members. Husband Gene has become expert in framing and mounting her photographs while daughter Kerri Ann is great at artistically critiquing and analysing the photographs. Judy’s next goal is to get her Masters Distinction in photography with the world body FIAP. No woman in Ireland has ever achieved this honour. Best wishes Judy, we are all so proud of you.

IPF Awards should not be confused with IPF Distinctions. Awards are made to individuals who have served above and beyond at club or higher level over a significant period.
