As we enter the month of February and the coming of spring in March, the longer days and extra hours of sunlight are most welcome and hopefully, we will all get some more opportunities to fulfill our photographic ambitions.
|
|
|
|
|
Also, this month sees the very first big event of 2018 for the Irish Photographic Federation the National Photographer of the Year & Nature Photographer of the Year Competition that will take place in the Talbot Hotel Co. Carlow on weekend of 17th & 18th February. The excitement has been building throughout the Regional Finals which have taken place in the four regions Dublin and South Leinster Region, Southern Association of Camera Clubs, Mid West & Midland Region, and the North East Region throughout the last few months. I’ve always said the standard of photography in this country is getting better and better over the years and having been present at two of these regional finals it was clear to see. And so now we have the main event to look forward to and I look forward to two great days of great photographs on display and the anticipation of the final results.

It’s only appropriate that we thank the sponsors of this event Frametastic, Nicelight, Image Creative Supplies, and One Photographic without whose support is very much appreciated. Also a word of thanks to all the clubs and voluntary organisers who gave up their time to host the Regional Finals in the four regions and of course to the judges who had the task of selecting the images that made it through to the National Finals. The IPF Coordinator for this event is Darragh Sherwin and a special word of thanks is extended to him for the work he has put into this event and bringing it all together.

On another note, this year marks the 40th Anniversary of the Irish Photographic Federation. The very first meeting of the Federation took place on April 1st, 1978 and the very first Annual General Meeting took place later that year in October. Together with my colleagues on the Council, we will be organising something to mark this special occasion and will keep you informed.

After a very busy few months in the regions with regional rounds of the Nature Photographer of the Year and Photographer of the Year, it is now the moment of truth, who will be crowned Nature Photographer of the Year 2018 and Photographer of the Year 2018? To find out you will have to come to Carlow, where all will be revealed.
|
The finals will be held on 17th and 18th of February in the Talbot Hotel Carlow.
|
The Nature Photographer of the Year will be held on Saturday and the Photographer of the Year will be held on Sunday.
|

Regional Rounds Report.

There was a larger than usual attendance at the DSLR regional rounds of the POTY and NPOTY competitions held in the Grand Hotel, Malahide on Saturday 20th January.
|
|
|

The event was hosted by Malahide Camera Club and save for a few computer software and connection glitches it ran very much according to plan and finished earlier than usual, thanks to sterling work by the three judges, Des Clinton, Johnny Cuddihy and Kevin Murphy ably assisted by a willing band of volunteers. The judges were of the opinion that the standard of photography was higher than ever.

The overall winner of the regional POTY title was Tony Murray from Malahide Camera Club while Tom Ormond, from Celbridge Camera Club, took the NPOTY title. POTY section winners included Roseanne Baume, Mark Taylor, Justin Melia, Tony Murray, Gerry Andrews and Michael Cusack. In the NPOTY competition section winners were Tom Ormond, Mary Twomey, Patrick Kavanagh, and Ita Martin. Full results are available on the DSLR Facebook Group

Southern Association of Camera Clubs
|
|
Saturday, Jan 13th: To a delighted and packed Cabragh Wetlands Trust Building the winner of the 2017-2018 Nature Photographer of the year was announced. Pakie O Donoghue from the Blackwater Photographic Society picked up the award. Pakie was shocked at receiving the award but it was truly deserved. Pakie also picked up a Gold Medal for the Open Print Catagory. There were about 100 people in attendance and special thanks go to the Wetland Trust and to Thurles Camera Club for helping make it a fantastic event. Blarney Photography Club did the SACC proud running an excellent event and once again congratulations to all the winners and Pakie. Seamus Mulcahy, Eddie Kelly and Kevin Day won several awards. The previous Month on December 3rd in the Horse and Jockey Hotel The Photographer of the Year was played out with a terrific attendance and a huge entry 100's of images were put through their paces by the judges and the final winner Seamus Costello took the POTY Seamus Scallane trophy. Seamus had won 2 golds and a bronze on the day and was a worthy winner. Other notable winners in the Advanced Catagories were Bill Power and Morgan O'Niell both of whom won several Medals and Awards.

The IPF Midlands and West Regional Round were run in the Mountmellick Arts Centre on Saturday, 27th of January. The Judges were Karen O'Hara, Richcie Dwyer & Seamus CostelloThe regional round was organised by Bob Morrison of Mullingar Camera Club and Anthony Demion from Athlone Photography Society and Mountmellick Camera Club. Sharon Rankin from Portlaoise Camera Club claimed the overall Photographer of the Year for the Midlands region Dominic Reddin from Mountmellick Camera Club won the Nature Photographer of the Year.

Mid Louth Camera Club hosted the North East regional round of the nature competition on Sat 21st in St Brigid's hall Dunleer, Co Louth.Our Judge for the Day was Mr. Cyrus Sangari who had a tough job selecting a winner from each section as the standard of images on show was high in both print and projected sections. Hugh Wilkinson of Catchlight Camera club took the overall prize of best image on the day

IPF Distinction Service Update
|
|
|
BOOKING FOR SEPTEMBER AND NOVEMBER 2018
ARE NOW OPEN.

Everyone interested in applying for the Licentiate, Associate or Fellowship should note that the September (Carlow) and November (Thurles) sessions are open for applications on the 5th February, 12 noon.
|
As always, applicants are advised to go to an assessment session to see what is required for a successful application. The upcoming sessions are 24th March in Dunamaise Arts Centre in Portlaoise and 19th May in Mullingar Arts Centre.
|
Distinction Workshop.
There are still a few places left.
The Drogheda Photographic Club will be running a Distinction’s workshop in Millmount Square, Drogheda on Saturday 24th February 2018. The workshop starts at 10am and finishes at 5pm with a lunch break from 1pm - 2pm. Three members of the IPF distinction’s assessing panel will be present to give advice on panels at all levels, Licentiate, Associate and Fellowship levels. Photographers attending for advice should bring along their proposed selected prints-10 for LIPF, 15 for AIPF and 20 for FIPF. Participants should also bring along some spare prints to be used if required. Digital images will not be looked at. Cost for participants with a panel is €50, observers without panel €30.

For those who have not paid their annual distinction fee this year, please note that you are now in arrears and are no longer allowed to use IPF distinction letters after your name.

The annual fee is very reasonable at €25 for standard renewal and only €15 for seniors. These fees help fund everything we do as an organisation so we ask you all to make the effort to help us continue to grow.

New Handbooks on Distinction Guidelines
The IPF Distinctions Committee have begun compiling guidelines on some of the specialist Associate and Fellowship panel subjects that come up for assessment. These are intended to assist applicants when they are in putting their panels together.
|
Given the popularity of Nature photography and of Travel photography, the first guidelines to be published are on those subjects. Much of what is in them will already be well known to applicants, especially the Nature guidelines. Nevertheless, the guidelines should help applicants to compile panels that fully address the requirements for a successful assessment.
|

IPF Club Affiliation Fee 2018
|
To Club Secretary / Treasurer.

|
The new membership year commenced on 1st January 2018 and all Clubs who wish to be affiliated to the IPF for 2018 should pay their fees before 31st January 2018.
|
The IPF Affiliation fee is unchanged from last year and is based on the number of members in each club, as follows:
|
- Less than 30 members: €75
- 30 to 50 members: €100
- 51 to 80 members: €125
- More than 80 members: €150
SACC clubs should refer to the Fees Page on SACC Website for joint collection of SACC & IPF fees. For all other regions, please go to the

Affiliation gives clubs and their members access to the wide range of services offered by the IPF. The annual fee covers the period from the 1st of January to the 31st of December and is due at the start of January each year. It allows members of paid-up clubs access to IPF competitions and only paid up clubs are eligible to enter IPF Club Competitions. Also, to apply for an IPF distinction as a club member at a reduced rate, your club must be affiliated to the IPF.
|
This email is being sent to club contacts per our 2017 contact information; please forward to the appropriate person in your club if the committee has changed since last year. Once payment has been received and the online Affiliation Form has been completed in full, your club will be listed on the IPF website as an Affiliated Club for 2018. This list will be the official register of Affiliated Clubs for the current year.

Audio Visual - A Double Clash
|
Hello to all Audio Visual sequence makers!
Clash number 1 - The Northern Ireland Photographic Association Audio Visual Festival, 2018 is held on the same weekend as the IPF POY and IPF Nature POY. This will be held at the Courtyard Theatre, Ballyearl, Doagh Road, Newtownabbey on Friday, February, 16th at 7.30 p.m. when the judge, Keith Leedham will be showing his work. On Saturday, 17th, from 10 a.m., sequences will be judged by Keith and after a meal, there will be a gala presentation of sequences and prizes.
Clash number 2 - The weekend concludes with an inter-federation "battle" when the winner of the above will be judged against the winner of the IPF AV National Championships last October. Yvonne Acheson, Shannon Camera Club' was the winner and her sequence “A Canvas Of Blue”, will represent the IPF. The best of luck Yvonne! The IPF present a silver medal for the audience vote each year.
The NIPA AV Festival has an All Ireland section, which I encourage all those who entered AV2017 to enter and see their sequences shown to a wider audience and judged by a different judge.
A mail shot is sent to all those interested in AV in January notifying all of the AV-related matters, the necessity to have a license to show their sequences and of course, if distinction holders, to pay their annual fees! Spotlight on Rory O' Connor
|
|
|
Rory is a member of Blarney Photography Club and describes himself as primarily a seascape photographer. He shares with us some of his images captured in Ballycotton, Kinard, and Youghal.
|
|
|
|
Q: When did you take up photography?
A: I’ve been tipping around with a camera ever since I was 7 years old. My mother used to allow me to take the odd snap with her Kodak Hawkeye. All down the years I’ve had a camera but it was never for more than taking snaps. I bought a Canon AV1 in the 70’s but I never developed (pardon the pun) any momentum in my photography. I think that momentum is an important ingredient in improving someone’s photography and that was missing back then. I later changed to digital with a Canon 350D, and while it made photography easier, I still didn’t have any momentum to my photography. I was still just taking snaps as the need arose, holidays, weddings and the like. I took photography up seriously in 2011 when joined a camera club. I bought a Nikon D7100 and the momentum that was missing up to now started to build, so I suppose the short answer to the question is “2011”.
|
Q: Which club are you a member of?
A: I am a member of Blarney Photography Club. Our club is a great club because we take our photography and the craic very seriously, in equal measure. The club tries to give all skill levels an equal benefit for membership. This year I was appointed the Club’s Competitions Officer. It’s an interesting position. It’s great when the club does well and not so good when the club doesn’t do well…...C'Est la Vie. This year Blarney Photography Club came 14th in the FIAP World Cup for Clubs. There were over 200 other clubs from 40 countries in the competition, so it was nice to have been involved in that. The main activities of the club are a monthly league competition, our Development section runs a course for beginners which lasts 12 weeks, we run a project on some subject every month, we also have a guest speaker most months and during the we organise outdoor shoots every week.
|
Q: Do you have any IPF/FIAP/RPS etc. distinctions?
A: I hold an AIPF and an AFIAP. When I was awarded my LIPF in 2014 I thought the AIPF was going to be light years away. However, by going to all the IPF distinction sittings, I got the knowledge and courage to attempt my AIPF. It took three very enjoyable years to put the final panel of seascape images together and I was awarded my AIPF in 2017. I also received my AFIAP in 2017.
|
Q: First camera? First DSLR?
A: Apart from using my mother’s Kodak Hawkeye, my first camera was an 1968 Agfa instamatic that took a 126 cartridge. My first DSLR was a Canon 350D. I still have all three cameras.
|
|
Q: What was the background to your most successful image?
A: My most successful image I suppose was a seascape image taken on Kinard beach on a wild and dark winter’s evening. This image gained an acceptance for me in every salon that I entered it in.
|
|
|
Q: Your own favorite image?
A: This is a hard one to answer. I’ve never really thought about it before. I don’t really have one that stands out. If I had to choose, I would pick one image from a foggy evening in Youghal where there was lovely light coming through the fog and another one from Ballycotton which again had the sun coming through the fog.
|
|
|
Q: What genre of photography best describes your photography or are you a general interest photographer?
A: I am primarily a seascape photographer but I do like to go inland on occasions to photograph either the Black Valley in Killarney or the most tranquil place on earth, Gougane Barra.
|
Q: Canon or Nikon or Fuji or Sony?
A: Nikon. I have a Nikon D800 and a D800E. Most of my images are taken with the D800 with a Nikon 20mm 2.8 prime lens. I also have a Fuji X10 which I use for occasional street shots.
|
Q: Would you recommend joining a camera club? Why? What have you got out of it?
A: I would really recommend to anybody interested in photography to join a club because it will bring a great focus and momentum to their photography and this will help make their photography better and more enjoyable. Apart from the craic that we have in Blarney Photography Club, as some of you may have witnessed and in some cases been on the receiving end of, what I have got from the club it is that it brought a focus to my photography. The club competitions, workshops, invited guests and outings helped to generate the necessary momentum which helped me to gain my photographic distinctions of AIPF and AFIAP. In addition, I have also made some great friends in the club and even became re-acquainted with some long lost ones.
|
Q: What does photography mean to you?
A: Photography means lots of things to me. It’s a means of escape and relaxation. It’s a means of capturing that moment that would otherwise be lost and gone forever. It’s a means of challenging myself to achieve prescribed standards.
|
Q: What is your photographic dream?
A: LOL…..I often dream of winning the Euro Millions, but I don’t have a photographic dream. I’m happy not to have a photographic dream because I think it would fence me in too much. At the moment I spend most of my time on the beach, but I’m not following a dream, I’m simply where I’m happiest in my photography. It’s a bit like fishing. I go to the beach. I try to figure out where there might be a good shot to be got, and whether I “catch the big one” or not, I enjoy it. The outcome of a recent outing to one of my favorite East Cork beaches reads “Took 51 shots, deleted 51 shots”. It can be like that some days. I see some photographers who seem to be constantly chasing the perfect shot. I’m not into doing that. I’ll take it if I get it of course but won’t lose sleep over it if I don’t.
|
I am a believer in the IPF Distinctions process. I go to most of the distinction sittings. I think it is a great place for education and inspiration. I plan to continue down the distinctions route. That’s as close to having a photographic dream as I have. I’m currently at the “awaiting further inspiration” stage…..LOL.
|

Focus On Mallow Camera Club
|
|
Q: When was Mallow Camera Club founded?
A: 1986.
|
Q: How many members do you have?
A: Over 50.
|
Q: When and where do you meet?
A: Each Monday at 8pm in the Mercy Centre, Mallow. From September to May of following year.
|
Q: Any notable events? (exhibitions/workshops etc.)
A: Permanent exhibitions in Mallow Hospital (2000 & 2016) with over 60 framed images and Kanturk Hospital with over 60 framed images plus 3 feature pieces (2017). Other recent exhibitions include Mallow Library, Mallow Golf Club, Mallow Arts Festival, Kanturk Arts Festival are an annual occurrence.
We run an 8-week Camera Skills Class for beginners annually. We also hold beginners and advanced classes in Photoshop annually. One of the major achievements of Mallow Camera Club was winning the IPF National Club Finals in 2004 (The Rose Bowl). This was the first time any club South of Dublin won the event, a feat which has not been repeated since.
|
Q: When was the club started and by whom?
A: Mallow Camera Club was founded as a result of night classes held in the Mallow VEC by a Mallow photographer called Gerard O'Meara in 1986. An inaugural meeting was held and amongst the attendance were Maurice Doolan, Pat Sheehan, John Hooton, John Doheny, Joanne Shields and Kieran O'Halloran. A committee was set up and some of the first members included were Pat Heavin, Coleman Culhane, and Tim Geary, all of whom are still active members, as are John Hooton, John Doheny and Pat Sheehan.

Q: Any member have any significant achievements or milestones recently?
A: John Doheny LIPF was awarded the Seamus Scullane Memorial Award 2017 for 30 years of service to Irish photography.
John Hooton FIPF, FRPS, MFIAP has published two books of photography.
We have a number of members with AIPF, AFIAP ARPS, EFIAP, LIPF and international salon medals.
|
Q: To what do you attribute your success?
A: We are a very active, friendly and supportive club. We meet weekly with a structured programme which includes members’ portfolio presentations and interesting guest speakers. We run regular outings, monthly in-house competitions and also encourage and support our members to take part in regional and national competitions. The more advanced members are very supportive of new and non-advanced members. Learning is a big part of our approach, with our Camera Skills Class series, which attracts new members each year, our Photoshop classes, and structured photography technique and photo critique sessions.
|
Q: What was the best outing/talk/club night in last 12 months?
A: Our annual Spring weekend outing to Dingle: great sunrises, great sunsets, great seascapes and great craic, with our mentor and host, John Hooton.
|
Q: If another camera club came to your town where are the best-kept secrets that they should photograph?
A: Mallow Castle, the Blackwater River, and Doneraile Park.
|
Q: What is the aspect of your group that makes it so special?
A: We are a very welcoming, supportive group and we put a lot of effort into developing our members while having lots of fun in the process. We also try to keep our programme as varied and interesting as possible.
|
Q: If you could ask the IPF to improve on one thing, what would that be?
A: Can’t think of anything we would need to see improved.
|
|

The Eddie Chandler Gallery - FIAP Exhibition Centre

|
Each year FIAP organise an inter-club competition - the FIAP Club World Cup. Any club in the world can participate and to do so the club must submit 20 images to FIAP.
A jury then scores each image and the club with the highest accumulated score wins the competition.
This year Catchlight Camera Club from Belfast won the title - beating off competition from the top clubs in the world - which is a fantastic achievement.
We are thrilled to present an exhibition of the winning panel in our Gallery. The images cover a range of subjects from Sport to Nature to Studio based.
It will open on Saturday 10 Feb at 11am and will run until Saturday 10Mar at 5pm.
The Gallery is open every Saturday from 11am to 5pm.

FIAP Distinctions Holders Exhibition - June 2018
|
The Irish Photographic Federation - in association with the Eddie Chandler Gallery, a FIAP Exhibition Center - will host an exhibition of images by successful FIAP Distinction Holders.
The exhibition will open on Saturday 9th, June 2018 in the Gallery.

The presentation of pins and certificates will take place as part of the opening reception.

All successful FIAP Distinction applicants for 2018 will be asked to submit some of their images and these will form the exhibition.The numbers to be submitted will depend on the number of photographers applying in 2018 - but we guaranteed at least one per photographer.

The FIAP Liaison Officer will coordinate the exhibition and will be in touch with each photographer following the closing date for FIAP distinctions which is 28th, February 2018.
The exhibition will then be on show for the month of June.

This is a change to our normal practice of presenting pins and certificates as part of the IPF Club Championships. It is felt that by organising this exhibition we will be able to give better recognition to our successful international photographers.

FIAP Distinctions

Applications for AFIAP, EFIAP and the EFIAP levels distinctions are now being accepted - with a closing date of 28th February 2018.
|
Application and payment are to be made via the IPF website - however applicants for these distinctions should contact Paul Stanley to ensure that they have the most up to date information.

For all distinctions it is VITAL that you use the latest copy of the spreadsheets and documents - which are available from both the IPF and FIAP websites - or from Paul Stanley, FIAP Liaison Officer.

IPF Nature Group - Workshop
The IPF Nature Group is delighted to announce that its latest nature photography workshop is scheduled for Saturday 10th February, 2018 at the Horse and Jockey Hotel, Thurles, from 10.00 until 16.30.
|
|
There will be four experienced presenters, Jack Malins ARPS, John Fox, Ita Martin LIPF, and Malcolm McCamley FIPF ARPS, and the topics covered will include all aspects of Bird, Flora, Fungi, Insect and Mammal photography. The workshop will be suitable for all levels of experience and will include an explanation of the FIAP Rules for Nature Photography as they now stand.

The cost of the workshop is €20 for Nature Group members and €35 for non-members. The latter will automatically become members of the Nature Group without charge until 31st Dec. 2018.
|
Morning and afternoon refreshments are included in the price and free car parking is available at the hotel. Lunch will be at attendees' own expense.
|
Attendance is limited, on a first come basis. Out recent similar workshops in Athlone and Enniscorthy were heavily subscribed, so early booking is advised.

January at the KPS

It’s been a tradition in recent years, that for our first meeting of the New Year, we are treated on a cold and miserable night to member’s slideshows on their travels to such warmer locations as Mauritius and Bangladesh. This year was no exception.
|

Yes, on Jan 4th Jack Healy gave us a memorable presentation on Caving Photography, He brought in his caving equipment and cameras. Indeed the last thing a cave photographer would worry about is spots on the sensor! We traveled from Fermanagh to Papua New Guinea and Jack’s adventures there were memorable for the sheer scale of the caves and their ecology and the surrounding mountainous jungle.

To complement Jack’s presentation, we also had a presentation on photography and biodiversity by Dr. Liam Lysaght, National Director of Biodiversity Ireland. He gave us a unique insight into how we can, as citizen scientists record in an evidence-based manner, the flora and fauna around us and how their habitats are changing with climate change and human intrusion. The KPS is embarking on a small collaborative project with Biodiversity Ireland later in the year. The Biodiversity Ireland website is well worth a visit.

And now for something completely different – AV! On January 11th we had an introduction to Audio – Visual Photography by Lilian Webb and Alan Lyons. This was a much overdue visit to the KPS and generated much interest among those present. A varied selection of sequences was shown with a demonstration of the software available to construct sequences. At present the committee is looking into forming an AV group to generate local activity and participation at a national level.

Our monthly club competition was held on January 18th, this time in print. The title was “Colour – you pick one”. Our judge was Emmanuelle Gallison, recently elected to the chair of Portlaoise CC. Congratulations Emmanuelle! Her quality of commentary and feedback was outstanding, and you could hear a pin drop with over 50 members present.

IPF Awards

IPF Awards should not be confused with IPF Distinctions. Awards are made to individuals who have served above and beyond at club or higher level over a significant period. To preserve the integrity and high standing of these honorary awards, the number granted each year will be strictly limited. The final decision on granting each Award will be made by the IPF Awards Committee, which shall be comprised of six members of the IPF Council including a secretary elected by the Awards Committee and chaired by the IPF President.
