Welcome to the December edition of our Newsletter. Just when we thought that Ireland was returning to some sort of normality, as a result of our high uptake of vaccinations and great social solidarity in complying with Government guidelines to protect ourselves and our communities, the fast-spreading Omicron Coronavirus variant has knocked us back once again.
|
|
|
|
At the end of what has been a difficult year for all of us, I want to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of the officers and members of our camera clubs, who, despite all the difficulties, have continued to operate successfully, many via remote virtual meetings. It has been particularly challenging for clubs in areas where poor internet connectivity makes virtual meetings very difficult. I once again wish to thank our affiliated clubs and their members for keeping their clubs active in such difficult times.
|
I also wish to thank my fellow Council members for their tremendous work during the year to ensure that national competitions and distinction assessments went ahead virtually and our newsletter continued to be published. Considering the current situation with the Omicron variant we are again including the advice received from our former President, Dr John Cuddihy, in this newsletter. His advice is more important than ever now and will assist our affiliated clubs and their members in their decision making. Together we will get through the Covid crisis. It may take longer than we hoped but we will get there. I wish to acknowledge the incredible efforts of front line staff who continue to work extraordinarily hard to support our community. I have just learned that Rev Dr Gordon Gray has passed away suddenly. Gordon was a long standing contributor to photography in Ireland as well as being member of the NIPA Council for many years. On behalf of the IPF I wish to extend our sympathy to his family and to NIPA.

Advisory Notice to Clubs re COVID-19
|
|
|
Please see below an Advisory Notice prepared by Dr John Cuddihy, former IPF President on the current COVID-19 situation.
|
"In light of the recent deteriorating national figures in new cases of COVID-19, it is advised that club officers seriously review their decision on returning to indoor face-to-face meetings. While this is a very frustrating situation, the health and wellbeing of club members should always remain paramount.
|
Should a club wish to proceed with, or remain with physical meetings, please be mindful of the following points:
|
- The current prevalence of COVID-19 in your area
- The vaccination status of individual members. Unvaccinated members should NOT attend meetings
- Adhere to all current public health guidelines for indoor meetings – social distancing, ventilation of the room, face coverings, hand sanitizing, etc
- If a club member, whether vaccinated or not, has symptoms suggestive of COVID-19, that member should NOT attend, and arrange a PCR test
- If a club member is currently a close contact, that member should NOT attend

16th FIAP WORLD CUP FOR CLUBS
|
|
|
The results of the FIAP World Cup for Clubs 2021 have been issued. Congratulations to the Irish-based clubs who took part in the competition this year.
|
|
The Top Ten results are below.
|
|
|
|
|
|
A total of 8 clubs from the Federation took part this year.
|
|
Congratulations to Malahide Camera Club and Drogheda Photography Club who were placed joint 21st and to Blarney Photography Club who were placed 23rd. This is out of a total entry form 218 club worldwide – a fantastic result.
|
|
Congratulations also to Michael Strapec of Blarney Photography Club who was awarded a FIAP silver Medal for his image “Me and My Sister”.
|
|
FIAP Distinctions
|
We are now coming to the time of year for people to start preparing their submissions for FIAP distinctions. All the information you require can be found on the IPF website at this address: https://irishphoto.ie/fiap/fiap-distinctions/
|
Applications are now open on the IPF website in November and all files, images etc. must be with me by the end of February 2022.
|
|

FIAP Wildlife Competition
|
Details are out about a new FIAP Wildlife Competition open to photographers from around the world. There are two sections
|
- Animal Behaviour
- Animal or Animals in their environment
There are some points to note
|
- Entries must comply with the new 2022 FIAP Wildlife Definition
- Colour photos only
- Free entry – participation is without entry fees
- The competition has FIAP patronage and acceptances can be counted for FIAP distinctions
- The competition is open to everyone
- The closing date is 1st February 2022
The FIAP Best Author will be invited to the next FIAP Congress or FIAP Photo Meeting with flight, transport and hotel costs paid. There will also be a further 36 awards.

Celbridge - A Photographic Record
|
|
|
Season’s Greetings to all Camera Clubs and members. We at Celbridge Camera Club would like to bring you glad tidings for this special time of the year. After many months of extraordinarily hard work, we finally launched our new book - Celbridge – A Photographic Record - on Friday 19 November in the Castletown House.
|
The high-quality book captures images from all around Celbridge and nearby towns and includes, drone shots, heritage areas, landmark buildings, wildlife, nature and the people of Celbridge at work, rest and play. The book is a large format, hardback, coffee-table style book and contains almost 600 images and runs to 150 pages.
|
Celbridge Camera Club is also ensuring that the images in the book will be available to view on-line in the near future and, in addition, we are also creating a vast on-line archive of over 2,000 images captured during the making of the book. This will be placed on an inter-active platform and will be added to as the years go by providing a constantly changing view of Celbridge and its environs.
|
The Book will be a unique and valuable visual record of Celbridge through the medium of photography reflecting the built and natural environment together with all facets of life in 2021. The book also includes a wide selection of images of nearby towns and villages which has broadened its appeal and coverage significantly.
|
|
RTÉ was so impressed with the project that it filmed a segment for its Nationwide programme covering the creation of the book and this segment was aired on Monday 13 December – see link below to RTE player.
|
Celbridge Camera Club committed €2,500 of its own funds to the project which was matched by funding from Intel as one of its winners of the 2021 Intel Pride of Place Competition. The Club is also very grateful to Castletown Press for their significant contribution to the project and to Croí Laighean Credit Union, Absolutely Fabulous Flowers and AIB who also provided financial support. Celbridge Camera Club also received fantastic support of local business people for this very community-focussed project.
|
The book will continue to benefit the community through its distribution to the National Library, National Photographic Archive, Maynooth University, local libraries and all local schools. It will also benefit those who have over the years had to emigrate or who now live abroad. They will forever be able to visit where they grew up and went to school. And, of course, as yet unborn children will be able to look back at the life their parents lived in Celbridge and environs when 2021 is but a distant memory for all.

Formally launching the book, Tony Doohan, local historian and founding member of CCC, described the book as a “formidable and comprehensive piece of work which has captured the essence of Celbridge, its people and its places.” He went on to say that “the collection of almost 600 photographs depicting life and living in Celbridge and nearby towns will educate and entertain the people of Celbridge and North Kildare for generations.”

The concept of the book was an initiative of Pat Shaw, President of Celbridge Camera Club to carry out a project to update an older and much smaller book produced by CCC in 1990. The project commenced in March 2021 and a core Project Team (Pat Shaw, Michael Davitt, Edel Moran, Stuart Bould, Colm Kavanagh, David Wolahan, and Dallas Camier) did an outstanding job in creating this special photographic record of Celbridge and its environs.

|
|
The members of CCC are immensely proud of the great work and team spirit displayed by the club and this book will be a lasting achievement for all and a significant contribution to the Community.
|
|
We at CCC firmly believe that this book will be a fascinating resource for future generations who turn back the pages of time and look at how we lived in 2021.
|
|
|
|

SACC Landscape Photographic Competition 2021
|
|
|
The SACC Landscape Photographic Competition 2021 results video was premiered on Sunday the 5th of December. This competition is the Memorial John Doheny Trophy and is open to all members of any SACC registered club. This year we see the sponsorship of the competition by the Environmental Protection Agency where John previously worked and is missed by all his colleagues.
|
|
There were two categories - Advanced and Non Advanced with €100, €75 & €50 prizes in each along with SACC medals. Congratulations to the overall winner Jonathan Power from Waterford Camera Club with the striking image " Embrace" feabured below.
|
|
|
The Winners in the Non Advanced section were:
