Welcome to the February edition of our Newsletter. It is great that a number of clubs, with suitable premises, are beginning to meet in person again. Clubs will also be able to organise shoots and outings more easily this year, all of which will encourage more of us to get out and about with our cameras and produce more images. We are all looking forward to meeting up with like-minded photographers again.

There have been some wonderful sunsets recently and hopefully some of you will have had the opportunity to capture them with your cameras. Looking at the work of other photographers is always an inspiration as well as a source of ideas for your own photographs. I have been inspired by the work of Sebastiao Salgado for many years and remember seeing some of his iconic images in an exhibition in Dublin some years ago. I have a number of his books, full of well-reproduced stunning images, which I dip into regularly. His empathy with the people and places he photographs is clearly conveyed by the images he takes.

As I mentioned last month, the March Distinction session will take pace via Zoom. The Council held a special meeting on February 11th to consider whether the National Club Finals should be a physical or Zoom event. It was agreed that this year’s Finals will be held via Zoom and will take place on Saturday, May 21st. Further information will be communicated to clubs once details have been finalised. In the meantime don’t forget to put this date in your diary.

Next Online Assessment: Saturday 26th March
|
The next distinction sitting will be on Saturday 26th March. This will be on-line and will take in Licentiates, Associates and Fellowships.
|
- Online application via the IPF website will close on March 8th
- Images must be received by the distinctions secretary no later than March 14th.

We are now coming to the time of year for people to start preparing their submissions for FIAP distinctions. All the information you require can be found on the IPF website at this address: https://irishphoto.ie/fiap/fiap-distinctions/

Applications opened on the IPF website in November 2021 and all files, images, etc., must be with me by the end of February 2022.

The FIAP Photo Academy Online Events is pleased to announce a presentation from the world-renowned Californian photographer Lisa Kristine on Saturday 5th March 2022 at 15:30 (3:30pm) London Time

Lisa Kristine is an internationally renowned photographer. For more than 30 years she has documented indigenous peoples and social causes in more than 150 countries across six continents. Her work navigates the emotional landscapes of her subjects and their environments, driving awareness around causes such as human trafficking, indigenous wisdom, and global unity.
|
Lisa’s work has garnered widespread acclaim in the world of photography and the international humanitarian stage. She is the recipient of a Lucie Humanitarian Award, presented at Carnegie Hall, honoring the greatest achievements of master photographers. The Dalai Lama, the Queen Mother of Bhutan and Amnesty International, among others, have all endorsed her work. David Clarke, former Head of Photography for the Tate Modern, describes Lisa’s arresting images of modern slavery as “a testament to truth and an insightful and inspiring body of evidence which should never and can never be denied.”

In 2017, Lisa founded a Human Thread Foundation, an international nonprofit organization whose mission is to incite action to eradicate human trafficking and to promote human dignity.

This event is being presented by FIAP in celebration of International Women’s Day 2022.
