Irish Photographic Federation NewsletterSeptember 2022 Welcome to the September edition of our Newsletter. The How We Age competition, which was supported by the IPF and NIPA, was a great success and there is further information on this below. Congratulations to the authors of the winning images: Helen Maloney from Athlone Camera Club, Gerry Scully from Dublin, and Mark Davidson from Belfast Photo Imaging Club. We are all looking forward to the first physical assessment of distinctions taking place next Saturday in Portlaoise. It will be great to be assessing prints again. The standard of the work submitted for assessment is wonderful to see. I’d encourage anyone thinking of submitting a panel for an IPF distinction to attend the public assessment sessions.
In the recent FIAP Mono Biennial, Ireland was placed 7th and received an Honourable Mention. John Sheridan received a gold medal and Turlough O’Reilly received a bronze. Congratulations to both. Taking into account this year’s mono and last year’s colour, Ireland is placed third in the world. A fantastic achievement that reflects the high standard of photography here.
We will shortly be providing clubs with information about the National Shield Competition. The Shield is always very popular and well supported. Again, I’m looking forward to it.
We are also finalising details for the IPF National Photography Competition which will be a replacement for the POTY Competition. Clubs will be provided with further information in the near future.
Best wishes, John Butler, FIPF, ARPS President Irish Photographic Federation

FIAP Photo Academy
The awards ceremony for the FIAP competition “A Sense of Humanity” will be held on Friday 7th October 2022 at 7pm. All are welcome to join us for this event where we will see who achieved awards in this competition and, hopefully, some wonderful images
Following that, the next presentation will be held on Friday 18th November 2022 at 7pm. It will be “The Fine Art of Nature” by the South African photographer, Chris Fallows.
Chris is well known for his wonderful images of African wildlife but especially for his inspirational documentation of the Great White Shark. I have seen Chris’s work and attended this presentation – it is highly recommended. All previous attendees will be notified of this presentation and will be able to register if they want to. Anyone else who is interested in attending should send an email to fiapphotoacademy@gmail.com FIAP Exhibition Centre, Dublin The FIAP Exhibition Centre is very proud to present a new exhibition “Panels, by members of the Dublin Camera Club”. This exhibition showcases some of the panels which members prepared for the recent Arthur Murrels Panels Competition – sponsored by Bermingham Cameras – including the winning panel by Gerry Andrews.
Gerry’s panel documents the abandoned mining town of Kolmanskop in Namibia. The Gallery is open every Saturday from 11am to 5pm and will be open on Friday 23rd September for Culture Night.
It would be great to see our friends and visitors from Dublin and other parts of Ireland for this wonderful exhibition.

FIAP Distinction Applications in 2023
This information is important to all those who may be considering applying for FIAP Distinctions in 2023: As many of you will be aware, a new set of FIAP Distinction regulations were sent out in January 2021. The regulations set out the requirements for each distinction level. The new regulations were to have come into force as of January 2022 but were subsequently deferred as they needed to be approved by the delegates from member nations at the FIAP Congress which was to take place in 2021. The pandemic has disrupted the normal timetable significantly. There had been the hope that a Congress could be held in the middle of 2022 but it will now be held in early December. All decisions regarding any changes to the new regulations, and the timing of their commencement, will be unknown until discussion and voting is completed by the delegates at these administrative meetings. The requirement for acceptances with prints is also unknown at this stage. This requirement was eased during the pandemic, an easing that is in place until the end of 2022. The requirement is not in the proposed new regulations but, I have a feeling that the requirement for prints could be reintroduced – though I do not know the numbers that would be required. The details and timing of implementation of any new requirements are not certain. Had the Congress been able to proceed in the middle of the year, the original expectation of being able to proceed with new regulations in 2023 was the likely scenario. In my opinion, it is now very unlikely that a decision taken in December will result in the new regulations commencing in January 2023. If amendments are made, it will take time to finalise and disseminate this. Each country must lodge their distinction applications as a group and may only do this once per year. The timing is the choice of each country in conjunction with FIAP and for Ireland we must lodge the applications in March each year – so March 2023 will be our next date. I would expect that it will take time to implement any new requirements so people applying in 2023 will probably do so under the existing requirements. I also expect that the current easing of the requirements for prints will be further extended for 2023 – but none of this is certain and will not be known until after the FIAP Congress in December. Whilst I consider it unlikely that the requirement for print acceptances will resume, it would be prudent for AFIAP and EFIAP applicants to enter some prints in salons offering print sections. The proposed timeframe for applications in 2023 will be the same as in previous years: Registration will open on the IPF website in November 2022 – where applicants will have to register and pay the relevant feesAll completed documentation and correctly sized images will have to be with me by 28 Feb 2023 at the very latest to allow us to verify that all is correctI will then submit the applications to FIAP in March 2023 and expect to know the outcome by May 2023 Information on the current requirements is available on the FIAP website -https://irishphoto.ie/fiap/fiap-distinctions/ Please contact the FIAP Liaison Officer if you have any queries or need more information via the IPF Website - https://irishphoto.ie/contact/ Select “FIAP Distinctions” from the dropdown menu and then ether the other details.

To: All clubs & special interest groups {for the attention of the Secretary or Treasurer} Communication between the IPF and the correct person in each club/special interest group is very important and in order to do this effectively, the IPF must have the correct contact details on file. Many clubs will have had a change of personnel since the club last provided the IPF with contact details as part of the affiliation process earlier in the year. This year the IPF has in place a system for clubs to provide the IPF with up-to-date contact details on an ongoing basis and the IPF invites each club/special interest to submit the most up-to-date contact details. Please provide all current contacts even if only one has changed as the system will not merge the old and new entries.
The first question you will see will be Annual affiliation or just contact details update.
Please select the option “Already affiliated for this year, just updating club contact details.
Please provide the contact details for all current officers, even if only one has changed. The IPF appreciates your co-operation in this matter. If you have any queries on the above you can email: treasurer@irishphoto.ie
