Irish Photographic Federation Newsletter

October 2022

Portrait
Welcome to the October edition of our newsletter. It was wonderful to have an actual live distinction assessment session in Portlaoise in September. It was a real treat so see so many wonderful panels. The standard of Irish Photography continues to improve, and prints are always so much better than projected images.
As Ansel Adams said, “The negative is the score, the print is the performance”. It was an honour to personally present the certificates to our successful applicants.

As promised in the September newsletter, we now have more information about the National Shield. It will be a digital competition this year, with a physical assessment by the judges and award presentations on Saturday November 26th in the Horse and Jockey in Thurles. I am looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Thurles. Further details on entering the Shield will be found below. We hope to return to prints for the Shield in 2023.

I’ve noticed that fungi are now appearing in our woodlands again. They are challenging, but very rewarding to photograph. So, get out there with your cameras and start snapping!

Best wishes,

John Butler, FIPF, ARPS

Morgan O'Neill

A Tribute

It was with deep sadness that we heard about the recent passing of one of Ireland’s great photographers, Morgan O’Neill.

Morgan for many years was a member of the Mallow Camera Club and following his move to Cork City he was associated with both the Cork Camera Group and Blarney Photographic Society.

Morgan O'Neill
Morgan was passionate about his photography and through this passion he gained local and international recognition for his own distinctive style of image making which was reminiscent of the great painters of the Renaissance.

He was a Fellow of the Irish Photographic Federation and he gained the EFIAP/p distinction from FIAP – the International Federation of Photographic Art.
His photographic accolades culminated in him receiving the first prize in the very prestigious United Arab Emirates Photography Competition in 2016 which resulted in his being invited to Dubai for the awards ceremony, the pinnacle of his many successes.

Morgan was not only a great photographer who was always ready to help others in their photographic journeys but he was also a great family man and we extend our condolences to his wife Siobhan and his children Morgan Jr and Kailan, both of whom featured in Morgan’s images.
Morgan bore his illness with great resilience continuing to produce wonderful images, with some examples illustrated below.

Irish Photographic Federation National Shield Digital Competition 2022

Competition Announcement

The IPF is pleased to announce details of the National Shield Competition for 2022.
This year’s event will be a digital competition with a live presentation of panels, images and an awards ceremony at the Horse & Jockey, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, on November 26th. More details on this to follow in due course.

As COVID 19 has not gone away, it was decided that this year’s competition will be digital, simply to provide flexibility in the event of a Covid surge that might prevent us from having the live awards ceremony. It is anticipated that we will return to printed panels for 2023/24.

Prior to uploading images, clubs are obliged to register and pay the entry fee of €60. To do this, please follow this link:

https://irishphoto.wufoo.com/forms/k14ojd8v007bmz1/

Once the online system for the competition is set up, the relevant link to the online entry system will be emailed to all clubs. It will also be published on our website www.irishphoto.ie and the Facebook page.

The format and rules of the competition has not changed from previous years and can be downloaded from:

IPF’s 39th National Audio-Visual Championships

&

8th International Audio Visual Competition

The Irish Photographic Federation’s 39th National Audio-Visual Championships & 8th International Audio Visual Competition took place on Sunday, 16th October, 2022 via Zoom. It was judged by - Sheila Haycox, ARPS, MPAGB/AV, EFIAP & Ian Bateman, FRPS, MPAGB, AV-AFIAP, APAGB. Though there was a big decrease in the number of entries, especially in the national section, and the numbers attending were slightly down, it was great to see attendees from the USA, South Africa, Italy, Scotland, England & Wales and from Antrim to Shannon. Unfortunately, John Butler, our President, was unable to attend for health reasons, and Sheamus O’Donoghue deputised with the welcome from John. The sequences were judged in advance and Ian & Sheila alternately gave very helpful comments on the national entries.

In the International Competition, Francesca Gernetti, AV-AFI & Carla Fiorina, Italy, won the bronze medal for “APT22”. Alan Tyrer, ARPS, FPAGB/AV won the silver medal with “Bomber” and the overall winner of the gold medal, with “In Search of Christina” was Richard Brown, FRPS, FIPF, FACI(M), EFIAP, APAGB, which also won the Audience Vote. Both Alan & Richard previous judges of the IPF AV National Championships are from England.

In the National Section, the overall winner and winner of the Advanced Section and the Kieran O’Loughlin Memorial Trophy was Liam Haines, LIPF, Offshoot Photographic Society, for “A Tribute to Jack”. Again the audience agreed with the judges. Brendan O’Sullivan, AIPF, Celbridge Camera Club, won the Best Sound Production Trophy for “The Man who Gave a Voice to Silence” as well as the silver medal in the Advanced Section. Jane McIlroy, CPAGB-AV, Bangor & North Down Camera Club, won the Best Photography Trophy for “Flower of Scotland” and a silver medal in the Intermediate Section. Celbridge Camera Club won the Best Script Trophy for “One of Ireland’s Greatest”.

Following the showing of all the sequences and prior to the announcement of the winners, Ian and Sheila treated us to the showing of their sequences. It was very appropriate that Sheila showed “Dictionary Man” as it was National Dictionary Day! Sheila also showed three other sequences including “They Stole a Mountain”. Ian showed a short sequence on enhancing speech for voice recordings, “The Final Cut”, which was originally produced in slides with 1 roll of 36 frames (and I remember many sequences that I made with 1 roll of slide film!) of a Pink Floyd Concert and updated and digitalised. His final sequence was “The Moor, The Monkey & The Wall Street Crash”, which was made after his move down south around Dartmoor & Exmoor. Full results can be seen at the following link:
With my WIFI not working and depending on a dongle, it was quite a long and stressful day from 9 in the morning until almost 7 p.m. I want to thank Alan Lyons, AIPF, especially who received all the entries, sent to the judges, projected them on the day and set up a You Tube channel to see most of the sequences until the end of November, which is on www.irishphoto.ie thanks to Gerry Kerr. I think I can claim to be the first organiser of an IPF National event that had a feathered friend join! A wee bird flew on to the shoulders of one of the attendees from South Africa and sat there comfortably for a while .. this brings a tweet to a whole new level! I now bow out after almost 24 years as IPF AV Committee Secretary/Treasurer and IPF AV Co-Ordinator for many years! Maybe I’ll take up bird watching!

FIAP Photo Academy

Chris Fallows - P0ster

The next presentation to be hosted by the FIAP Photo Academy will be held on Friday 18th November 200 at 7pm.

Chris Fallows is a fne art wildlife photographer; a documentary host; a naturalist and conservationist. Since launching his fine art portfolio in October 2021, his art work has been exhibited at the famous Saatchi Gallery in London and the prestigious ARX Gallery, also in London.

His work focuses on showcases and celebrating the planet’s most iconic animals and through his 11th Hour Collection, he brings to the narrative a very important conservation message.

As a naturalist, in 1996, Chris discovered the now world famous breaching Great White Shark behavior at Seal Island in Cape Town, South Africa and spent over 3,500 days either in or on the ocean with these sharks. He has co–authored 18 peer-reviewed scientific papers in the study of Great White Sharks and spends upwards of 200 days at sea per year.

Much of his remaining time is spent in wildlife reserves in Southern and East Africa.
In 2008 he wrote, and through PQ Blackwell, published a book titled, “Great White and the Majesty of Sharks” which sold 25,000 copies.

He has been the host of the extremely popular “Air Jaws” series on Discovery Channel’s Sharks Week from 2001 to present. Shark Week has an estimated viewership of 30 million viewers each year.

Through the sale Chris’s fine art, he contributes to various NGOs that he believes are making a true difference on the ground, and his ultimate goal, along with his wife Monique, is to identify and purchase land in Southern Africa in order preserve habitat and participate in re-wilding projects.

I would ask that everyone please respect this and refrain from publicising their involvement until then.

FIAP World Cup for Clubs

The details of this competition for individual clubs has been announced and information can be found here:
This is a competition which is open to clubs – and Ireland has been very successful in it over the years with both Dundalk Photographic Society and Catchlight Camera Club being overall winners and others being placed very highly.

It is a competition based on PDI images.

The closing date is 2nd December 2022.

FIAP Distinction applications in 2023

This information is important to all those who may be considering applying for FIAP Distinctions in 2023.

As many of you will be aware, a new set of FIAP distinctions regulations were sent out in January 2021. The regulations set out the requirements for each distinction level. The new regulations were to have come into force as of January 2022 but were subsequently deferred as they needed to be approved by the delegates from member nations at the FIAP Congress which was to take place in 2021. The pandemic has disrupted the normal timetable significantly. There had been the hope that a Congress could be held in the middle of 2022 but it will now be held in early December. All decisions regarding any changes to the new regulations, and the timing of their commencement, will be unknown until discussion and voting is completed by the delegates at these administrative meetings.

The requirement for acceptances with prints is also unknown at this stage. This requirement was eased during the pandemic, an easing that is in place until the end of 2022. The requirement is not in the proposed new regulations but, I have a feeling that the requirement for prints could be reintroduced – though I do not know the numbers that would be required.

The details and timing of implementation of any new requirements are not certain. Had the Congress been able to proceed in the middle of the year, the original expectation of being able to proceed with new regulations in 2023 was the likely scenario. In my opinion, it is now very unlikely that a decision taken in December will result in the new regulations commencing in January 2023. If amendments are made, it will take time to finalise and disseminate this.

Each country must lodge their distinction applications as a group and may only do this once per year. The timing is the choice of each country in conjunction with FIAP and for Ireland we must lodge the applications in March each year – so March 2023 will be our next date.

I would expect that it will take time to implement any new requirements so people applying in 2023 will probably do so under the existing requirements. I also expect that the current easing of the requirements for prints will be further extended for 2023 – but none of this is certain and will not be known until after the FIAP Congress in December.

Whilst I consider it unlikely that the requirement for print acceptances will resume, it would be prudent for AFIAP and EFIAP applicants to enter some prints in salons offering print sections.

The proposed timeframe for applications in 2023 will be the same as in previous years:
  • Registration will open on the IPF website in November 2022 – where applicants will have to register and pay the relevant fees
  • All completed documentation and correctly sized images will have to be with me by 28 Feb 2023 at the very latest to allow us to verify that all is correct
  • I will then submit the applications to FIAP in March 2023 and expect to know the outcome by May 2023
Information on the current requirements is available on the FIAP website - https://irishphoto.ie/fiap/fiap-distinctions/

Please contact the FIAP Liaison Officer if you have any queries or need more information via the IPF Website - https://irishphoto.ie/contact/ Select “FIAP Distinctions” from the dropdown menu and then enter the other details.
