December 2022

Portraid
Welcome to the December edition of our Newsletter. It was a pleasure to attend the National Shield finals in Thurles. There was a great turnout on the day and I was delighted with the number of Clubs participating. The standard of photography was very high and all enjoyed seeing the images being projected. Congratulations to the individual medal winners: Denis Ryan, Mike McNamara and Berni Hennessey in Mono; Eleanor Clarke, Philip Kerins and Evgeny Butusov in Colour.
Congratulations to Drogheda on being the best Club, to Blarney for coming second and to Limerick who were in third place. Thanks also to our three judges Arthur Carron, Charlie O’Neill and Gerry Kelleher for judging the competition and providing thoughtful comments on the panels.

The event was a great success. I want to thank the IPF team that organised the event – Rory O’Connor, Sheamus O’Donoghue, Dom Redding, Liam Beattie, George Pacini and Jennifer Willis. Many hours of work go into organising events like this – well done everyone.

The current icy weather is providing good photo opportunities, hope you all capture some atmospheric images.

I wish to thank my fellow Council members for their tremendous work during the year. Everyone on Council is expected to take on a specific job or two and that is what keeps the IPF running smoothly. We will be looking for member clubs to nominate more Council members who will be willing and able to take on some of the many jobs on Council in the New Year.

I wish you all a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

National Shield 2022

National Shield 2022 Report by Sheamus O’Donoghue

I write this report on behalf of John Butler, Rory O’Connor, George Pacini, Jennifer Willis, Dominic Reddin & myself the group that helped to make the National Shield possible this year.

At the IPF Council meeting in Portlaoise on September 10th no one present was in a position to take on the role of National Shield coordinator. Following that, our President John Butler put out an email appealing to all Council members to consider taking on that job. No one volunteered.

Indeed it is fair to say that all current Council members are fully committed to other necessary functions and what we really need is around seven or eight new members to bring the Council up full membership so that the workload can be spread more evenly across the board.

Any new members would be very welcome. Just let the President, National Secretary or any council member know & we will be happy to co-opt you on to the IPF Council.
Since we had no response to the appeal by September 16th it was decided that a competition committee would run the competition made up of the names listed above. We were all tasked to do various things, e.g. Shaemus O’Donoghue & Rory O’Connor to prepare the Rules, George Pacini & Jennifer Willis to look after the software, Rory to prepare the pre-registration form & payment system and get the Rules and general information up on the website and in the newsletter. Thanks to Gerry Kerr for the website, to Ita Pentony for the Newsletter (Oscailt) and to George Pacini for Facebook. Sheamus O’Donoghue looked after the procurement of the Medals, Trophies Certificates and Honourable Mention ribbons. In a break with tradition, we decided to give trophies for all the Panel awards and the Overall awards also.

It was agreed that the National Shield would be a digital only competition this time but with the presentation of awards to be held in public at the Horse & Jockey hotel near Thurles. Rory O’Connor & Dominic Reddin along with John Butler checked that the hotel would be suitable for the awards event.

The competition was announced and opened for entries through October, with the closing date set for November 13th. Judging was done remotely on the 19th and the awards ceremony was held on Saturday November 26th at 2pm at the Horse & Jockey hotel. Twenty three clubs entered the competition.

The three judges appointed by the Judges committee, Des Clinton, Paul Stanley, Gabriel O’Shaughnessy & Ross McKelvey were Archie Carron, Dundalk Photographic Society, Charlie O’Neill, Dublin Camera Club & Gerard Kelliher, Dublin Camera Club. A big thank you to them for a job well done.

Rory O’Connor prepared a Powerpoint presentation of all the images entered in the National Shield to be projected in the auditorium for the audience. He also created a presentation of the awarded individual images Monochrome and Colour as well as the awarded panels , Monochrome, Colour, and Overall.

The three judges commented on all the panels and the medals, Honour Mention ribbons,Trophies and Certificates were presented by the IPF president John Butler (see images below).

I am glad to say that the decision to hold the awards ceremony in person was a good one as about seventy club members were present and it was great to meet up again after such a long time.

The awardees on the day were as follows.

FIAP Nature Biennial
The results of the Irish entry to the FIAP Nature Biennial have been received from FIAP. Each image was scored out of 15 and all our images scored very well. We also improved our cohesion scores with this entry. The overall results have not yet been formally released by FIAP but I have been told that Ireland received an Honourable Mention in both the Print and the PDI sections.

This is an excellent result and our thanks go to the photographers whose images represented Ireland, to the selection committee of Gabriel O’Shaughnessy, Des Clinton and Paul Stanley and also to Gabriel O’Shaughnessy for printing the 10 images for the Print entry.

FIAP Photo Meeting
Our FIAP Liaison Officer attended the FIAP Photo Meeting which took place in Oman during October. One of the events which took place during the week was the official launch of the exhibition for the FIAP Mono Biennial and the presentation of the awards. On behalf of Ireland he accepted our Honourable Mention and collected the medals which were won by John Sheridan and Turlough O’Reilly. He also collected the catalogues for each entrant. All of these have now been posted to the photographers concerned.

Earlier this year we heard that Kieran O’Mahony had received the FIAP Blue Pin in the FIAP Wildlife Only contest. Kieran was also invited to attend the FIAP Photo Meeting as a guest of FIAP. During the event Kieran made a presentation to the 180 people attending and received his Blue Pin. Congratulations to Kieran on this great success.

FIAP Distinction applications in 2023

This information is important to all those who may be considering applying for FIAP Distinctions in 2023.

As many of you will be aware, a new set of FIAP Distinctions regulations were sent out in January 2021. The regulations set out the requirements for each Distinction level. The new regulations were to have come into force as of January 2022 but were subsequently deferred as they needed to be approved by the delegates from member nations at the FIAP Congress which was to take place in 2021. The pandemic has disrupted the normal timetable significantly.

This Congress took place on the 2nd and 3rd of December and our Liaison Officer was present. During the Congress the item in relation to changes to the FIAP Distinctions was discussed and I am delighted to let you know the following:

  • The revised distinctions have now been completely cancelled. They will not be introduced.
  • As a response to the COVID pandemic and the resulting lockdown worldwide FIAP had introduced a reduction in the fees for all FIAP Distinctions and for the Life Card. This was due to last until June 2023. This has now been extended to the end of 2023.
  • FIAP had also introduced a waiver on the requirement for print acceptances which photographers applying for AFIAP and EFIAP had to meet. This was in place until the end of 2022 – it has now been extended to the end of 2023. SO – anyone applying for AFIAP and EFIAP in this season will not have to show print acceptances.
The timeframe for applications in 2023 will be the same as in previous years:
  • Registration is now open on the IPF website – where applicants will have to register and pay the relevant fees
  • All completed documentation and correctly sized images will have to be with me by 28 Feb 2023 at the very latest to allow us to verify that all is correct
  • I will then submit the applications to FIAP in March 2023 and expect to know the outcome by May 2023
Information on the current requirements is available on the FIAP website - https://irishphoto.ie/fiap/fiap-distinctions/
Please contact the FIAP Liaison Officer if you have any queries or need more information via the IPF Website - https://irishphoto.ie/contact/ Select “FIAP Distinctions” from the dropdown menu and then enter the other details.

I would particularly ask anyone who is considering applying for a FIAP Distinction to contact me and to send me the completed documentation as soon as possible. There is a lot of cross-checking to carry out on each application. The sooner I receive them the soon this can be done so that we all have an opportunity to rectify any errors.
Many thanks for your cooperation.

Paul Stanley FIPA EFIAP/p ESFIAP

Brendan Walkin Medal - Anne Cassidy

Anne Cassidy was presented with the Brendan Walkin medal, the highest honour the IPF Council can bestow, at the recent Thurles Distinction sitting by IPF President, John Butler. She was awarded the medal for her contribution to Irish photography over 30 years. She is recognised as a great photographer, a superb lecturer and brilliant photography judge.

Anne has an FIPF distinction with the Irish Photographic Federation and is also an FRPS distinction holder with the Royal Photographic Society. This distinction was awarded for a stunning documentary panel of images taken of pilgrimages on Lough Derg.

Anne was invited many years ago onto a number of Distinction assessing panels across various genres with the RPS after which we asked her onto the IPF distinction assessing panel where she generously shares her knowledge with other panel members.
