Welcome to the January edition of our Newsletter. I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year and managed to find time to take some photos.
|
|
We move into 2023 with optimism and hope that life is finally getting back to normal following the Covid crisis. I’m looking forward to meeting up with many of you at the various in person events we will have during the year.
|
|
|
|
|
The first of these is the Regional Nature Competition organised annually by the IPF Nature Group and NIPA. It is taking place in the Botanical Gardens in Dublin on February 11th and I’m looking forward to attending the event and seeing the images.
|
The next event I’m looking forward to is the new National Photography Competition. It will be judged online and the images shown and results announced in the Horse and Jockey hotel in Thurles on April 22nd. The national competition is being sponsored by Bermingham Cameras . A big thank you to Brian Óg Whelan for his generous support for the competition (see details of both competitions below).

The National Club Championships will be an in-person event this year and will be held, as usual, in Mullingar on the weekend of May 20th and 21st. It will be great to be viewing prints again. For me, photography has always been about prints.
|
At the 17th FIAP World Cup for Clubs (2022), Ireland continued to punch well above its weight. Catchlight came 4th, Drogheda came 16th, Mallow 17th and Blarney 22nd. Congratulations to all and well done to all the clubs from the IPF who entered.
|
I will be writing to all clubs shortly to seek new nominations to Council. As you are all aware the IPF does not have any paid staff and therefore relies on Council members, nominated by the Clubs, to take on specific responsibilities. Please give my request serious consideration. Your support is required to further the development of photography in Ireland.

Inter-Regional Competition 2023

The Nature Group is delighted to announce its 5th annual competition between our members and the members of our counterpart in Northern Ireland, the Nature Group of the Northern Ireland Photographic Association. We have again been fortunate to obtain permission to use the facilities of the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin and the competition will take place in one of their lecture rooms on Saturday, 11th February 2023.
|
Individual awards, along with the overall group title will be up for grabs on the day along with highly commended and commended in each of two classes - Open Wildlife, and Macro. Judges for the event will be Gordon Rae MPAGB ARPS renowned Scottish wildlife photographer and Rod Wheelan’s MPAGB FRPS MFIAP FIPF HonPAGB HonSPF.
|
The competition is open to members of the Nature Group and membership can be applied for by contacting ipfnaturegroup@gmail.com. Membership costs €15 per year and gives access to nature-related talks, events, and competitions. Entry to the event on the day is free and open to all. The Botanic Gardens has an excellent restaurant and a coffee shop. A visit to the gardens in the morning followed by lunch and the screening of the entries in the afternoon would make for a great day out for family and friends. We hope to see you there.

New IPF National Photography Competitions 2023
|
|
|
|
|

Initial Notification
We are delighted to announce two new IPF national photography competitions. The IPF National Photography Competitions aim to encourage the highest standards in photography. The competitions will be open all member of IPF affiliated clubs.
|
The first competition is the IPF National Photography Competition 2023, initial details are outlined below. Further information regarding the process for entering the competition will be announced shortly. Entry will be via the IPF website.
|
The second competition will by the IPF Nature Competition 2023. We are currently planning for this competition and a further announcement will be made when we have more information. Entry will also be via the IPF website.
|
The IPF National Photography Competition consists of six separate categories, with IPF gold, IPF silver and IPF bronze medals, plus two Honourable Mentions being awarded in each category.
|
The “Image of the Year” will be chosen from the winning images from each category by the judges and will also be awarded a gold medal and a Nikon Z 611 and 24-70 lens sponsored by Bermingham Cameras.
|
The 2023 Competition is a PDI event only.
|

Distinction Annual Fees for 2023
|
|
|
|
|
Reminder emails for the IFP distinction annual fees for 2023 were sent out to all IPF distinction-holders on 10th January. Thanks to the hundreds of distinction-holders who have paid their annual fee in response to this email. If you have not yet paid please do so at your earliest opportunity. To continue using your IPF distinction letters you must pay the Annual Fee before 31st March 2023, together with any arrears that may be due for previous years. If payment has not been received by that date your distinction will be classified as “Not Renewed” and you no longer have permission to use your distinction letters.

To pay your 2023 fee, please go to the renewal page on the IPF website:
|
|
|
|
We kindly request that you use Paypal to make your payment but if that is not possible, please select “offline payment” and make your payment by bank transfer to the Irish Photographic Federation Bank Account at Permanent TSB, IBAN IE17 IPBS 9906 3900 2939 81. Please ensure that your name appears on the bank transfer. The fees for 2023 are unchanged from previous years and are:

- Standard Annual Fee: €25
- Seniors (65+) Annual Fee: €15
You can, if you wish, choose to pay a lifetime fee of €400; this will mean you will never have to pay an annual fee again, no matter what IPF Distinctions you achieve in the future.
|
If you have not received a reminder email for your distinction annual fees for 2023 please send an email to renewals@irishphoto.ie , especially if you previously used an Eircom email address and need to update your registered email address with the IPF.

FIAP News

|
|
By now everyone will have heard the results of the 2022 FIAP World Cup for Clubs. There were a total of 224 clubs from 48 countries participating with a total of 4,385 images submitted.
|
This year 9 IPF affiliated clubs participated. The overall winning club was Rolls Royce (Derby) Photographic Society from the UK who also won the Maurice Dorikens trophy for having achieved the best in the past five consecutive FIAP World Cups (form 2018-2022).
|
|
Congratulations go to Catchlight Camera Club who were the highest placed IPF affiliated club being placed 4th overall and being awarded a FIAP Bronze Medal.
|
|
Many thanks to all the IPF affiliated clubs who supported this great competition.

|
The next event being hosted by the FIAP Photo Academy is “Why Black and White” with Cole Thompson. It will take place on 11th February 2023 starting at 7pm.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Cole Thompson is an American photographer based in Colorado. He describes himself as being uniquely unqualified to speak on photography. However, in about an hour Cole will make the case that black and white is the perfect medium for any subject … except one. Cole will show work from his various portfolios. His website is:

FIAP Exhibition Centre Dublin
|
The current exhibition in the FIAP Exhibition Centre is “The Art of Nude” by Ross McKelvey MFIAP MPAGB EFIAP/p.
|
This exhibition shows the portfolio of images which Ross submitted to FIAP for his successful MFIAP application. As Ross says:
|
'Studio photography has been a passion of mine for several years. I have always had a certain fascination with the use of nudity in the art World. Just as flowers, sunsets, and mountains are useful tools in the artist's and the photographer’s toolkit, the beauty of the female form has been the basis and the inspiration for my panel of photographic prints. Whether the model is posing statuesque, or gliding through the air like a ballerina, the beauty and the energy of the female form shines though. I have used minimal props and sheer material to break up the total nudity in this panel, but my intention is that the beauty, grace and energy of these individual subjects overrides the nudity. It is all about them, and nothing about the nudity. That is what makes the ‘art’ of the ‘nude.’
|
This exhibition will continue until 11th February and will be open each Saturday from 11am to 5pm. The centre is part of the Dublin Camera Club premises at 10 Lower Camden Street Dublin D02 NA49

FIAP Distinction Applications in 2023
|
This information is important to all those who may be considering applying for FIAP Distinctions in 2023.
|
The timeframe for applications in 2023 will be the same as in previous years:
|
- Registration is now open on the IPF website – where applicants will have to register and pay the relevant fees
- All completed documentation and correctly sized images will have to be with me by 28 Feb 2023 at the very latest to allow us to verify that all is correct
- I will then submit the applications to FIAP in March 2023 and expect to know the outcome by May 2023

Please contact the FIAP Liaison Officer if you have any queries or need more information via the IPF Website - https://irishphoto.ie/contact/ Select “FIAP Distinctions” from the dropdown menu and then enter the other details.

I would particularly ask anyone who is considering applying for a FIAP Distinction to contact me and to send me the completed documentation as soon as possible. There is a lot of cross-checking to carry out on each application. The sooner I receive them the soon this can be done so that we all have an opportunity to rectify any errors.
