Newsletter

October 2023

Welcome to our Newsletter.
Congratulations to all who successfully submitted panels for IPF distinctions at the September assessment in Portlaoise. It is great to see the standards achieved by Irish photographers. Working towards a distinction is a great way to improve your photography, so why not put a panel together and join the increasing number of photographers with IPF distinctions. I’m looking forward to the next assessment in November.
I want to congratulate Limerick Camera Club who are celebrating their 80th birthday by launching a book: “Framed through Time: A Celebration of the Limerick Camera Club 1943 – 2023” (details below). Books like this highlight the important role that camera clubs have played in recording social history. Well done to all involved.

I encourage all of you to make a special effort to document and record what is going on in your own communities. The images you capture today may become part of an important historical record in the future.

I’d like to encourage as many clubs as possible to enter the National Shield Competition which is being held in Drogheda on November 25th. It is going to be a print competition this year and I’m looking forward to viewing the panels.

Framed Through Time

A Celebration of Limerick Camera Club 1943-2023

Limerick Camera Club is delighted to announce the launch its very first book, "Framed through Time: A Celebration of the Limerick Camera Club 1943-2023". This book serves as a momentous tribute to the many members who shaped the club's remarkable 80-year journey from its inception at the end of the second world war to the present day.

Showcasing the camera club's rich heritage, "Framed through Time" pays homage to its past and present members. Their passion for capturing life through a lens is echoed throughout its pages, highlighting not only their individual talents but also the enduring spirit of the club itself. The book ultimately sheds light on how Limerick Camera Club's history intertwines with the artistic fabric of Ireland, standing proudly as the oldest camera club in the nation.

The book launch signals a milestone event in the annals of the club, and we invite you to be part of it. It will take place at O’Mahonys Booksellers, located at 120 O'Connell St, Limerick City, on Thursday, the 9th of November at 7 PM.

Join us for an evening of shared stories, appreciation of art, and the recognition of the resilient spirit of Limerick Camera Club. This is not just the launch of a book, but a celebration of eight decades of dedication, camaraderie, and the art of capturing moments that matter.

Don't miss out on owning a piece of this extraordinary 80-year journey. Come and be a part of the Limerick Camera Club's living history.

Warm wishes,

Denis Ryan
Chairman

FIAP Distinctions 2024

The closing date for applications for FIAP distinctions in 2024 will be 28 February 2024.

We will open applications on 01 November 2023 but anyone who is interested in applying for a FIAP distinction should contact the FIAP Liaison Officer, Paul Stanley, at stanleyp38@gmail.com who can advise on how to proceed.

It is important to note that every salon organiser has to return a file to FIAP listing all acceptances and awards. FIAP then check all acceptances and awards which you list on your application form for any FIAP distinction against this list. Some organisers are slow in making these returns. So there is a good possibility that any acceptance or award gained from January 2024 onwards may not be known to FIAP by the time the application is received.

You might want to ensure that you meet the requirements by the end of December 2023.

And for AFIAP and EFIAP applications please read the following notice in relation to Print Acceptances.

FIAP Print Requirements for 2024 Onwards

During the Covid Pandemic and associated lockdown situations worldwide, FIAP temporarily removed the requirement for print acceptances in AFIAP and EFIAP distinction applications.

FIAP have confirmed that this temporary removal of the requirement will not apply for distinction applications in 2024.

This means that anyone in Ireland who wishes to apply for the AFIAP or EFIAP Distinction in 2024 will have to meet the print requirements.

These are:
  • For AFIAP you must have at least 4 acceptances with 4 different images in print sections of salons
  • For EFIAP you must have at least 12 acceptances with 12 different images in print sections of salons. These can include the 4 used for your AFIAP distinction
  • In all cases you can also have digital image acceptances for the same images.
The requirement for prints never applied for the other FIAP Distinctions - only for AFIAP and EFIAP. So those applying for any of the other FIAP distinctions do not need to have print acceptances - though it must be said that supporting print salons is important so that we can maintain the wonderful tradition of the printed image.
