IPF Newsletter - December - 2018

IPF
And so the month of December is already upon us it feels like the year has just passed us by but that’s where we are and I hope the weather hasn’t dampened your spirits too much as the dark mornings and evenings greet us for at least another couple of weeks.
This year marks a special celebration for the Federation as we celebrate its 40th year of existence. As a voluntary organisation that in its self is a major achievement and its only fitting that as the year comes to an end in this the 40th anniversary we pay special tribute once again to the late Sean Casey R.I.P. who was one of the co-founding members all those years ago and to all the officers who have come and gone and served the Federation over the years and have represented the many clubs and photographers across Ireland in amateur photography. My extended thanks also go to the current members of the Council who have worked tirelessly over the past year putting the programme of activities together and doing tremendous work on a voluntary basis.
November was another busy month for us with the National Shield which took place in Palmerstown on November 18th followed by the last Distinction sitting of the year taken place a week later on November 24th in Thurles. Two very successful events with great attendances on both days and as always our thanks goes out to the host clubs involved in both these events, Thurles Camera Club and Palmerstown Camera Club. My extended thanks also go to the coordinators of these two events Bob Morrisson (National Distinctions Secretary) under the stewardship of Des Clinton (Chairman of the Distinctions Committee), and Patrick Kavanagh National Shield Coordinator. Together with the support of Liam Beattie, Ita Martin, Tony Murray, Brian Deering, John Cuddihy, Adrian Parkinson and Andrew Mangan all ensured that these two events ran very smoothly and provided two great days for photographers and clubs who traveled to both events. A more detailed report further on will give you more of an insight into the overall results.
Congratulations also to the IPF Nature Group who held a successful projected image competition against the Northern Ireland Photographic Association (NIPA) in the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin, on Saturday 11th. The judges on the day were Mark Sedgwick FIPF EFIAP ESFIAP and Margaret Welby, a prize-winning professional wildlife photographer from the UK, I was delighted to be asked along to be asked to hand out the prizes to all the winners including the overall winner Kieron O'Mahony
And so as the year comes to a close let me on behalf of the Irish Photographic Federation wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year. I hope your photographic ambitions become a reality in 2019, and I look forward to meeting you all at some stage at the various events that we have planned to take place throughout the New Year.
Until next time,
Kind Regards,
Dominic Reddin FIPF
President Irish Photographic Federation

National Shield 2018

Congratulations to Malahide Camera Club IPF 2018 National Shield winners.

Waterford Camera Club took second place and Offshoot Photography Society third place.

Hi all
It was great to meet you all at the national shield in Palmerstown Sports centre on the 18th November a total of 27 clubs entered from all over the Country. The standard was very high and congratulations to the winners. I know how difficult it is for clubs to put panels together for the National Shield having been competition secretary in my own club (Palmerstown Camera Club) for a number of years. I think all the hard work the clubs have put into this competition has paid off. It was truly remarkable to see all the panels displayed in the Exhibition hall on the day. To all the clubs who could not enter I know it is difficult and perhaps you will enter in the future years. Please remember the enjoyment of seeing your image up on display representing your club is fantastic.
I would like to thank all the clubs who entered, Palmerstown Camera Club members who helped out on the day Ita Martin and Tony Murray who worked hard as part of the background team. Huge thanks to the judges I think you would agree they did a great job and their comments were more than helpful Tim Gleeson who gave a fantastic presentation on underwater photography.
I think you will agree the venue was perfect for this competition and I would like to thank Stephen and John from the sports complex who were a great help and making sure we had everything we needed.
Just to end I would like to wish everyone success with their photography as it is your images that make these competitions as successful as they are and to the competition sectaries and selection committees out there, keep up the good work.
Thanking you

A Poem by Laurie Campbell (AIPF)

My Ode to an A : Laurie Campbell

Its a long way to Tipperary, that i do know
For to the town of Thurles i did go
Hoping those IPF judges they wouldn't say No
Or I'd be drowning my sorrows in Pinot Grigeo
**********************************************************
From Cork and Kerry, and County Clare
There wasn't a county not represented there
From Belfast and Bangor they traveled that day
To hear what those IPF judges had to say
*************************************************************
A year in the making, this panel I'm baking
The swopping and dropping, and then photoshopping
Not to mention the post-capture cropping
So much printmaking for this big undertaking
*************************************************************
And then there's the statement, that's definitely mandated
Your thoughts on your panel must by clearly translated,
It's a pain in the butt for the uninitiated!
By the end of the process your brain's pixelated
*********************************************************************
And then on the day, the judges hold sway
They don't let favouritism get in their way
While we in the background, tremble and pray
As all of our work they closely surveyed
**********************************************************************
Some panels were scrutinised and then debated
The reasons for decisions were then related
I for one was mighty elated,
When the decision was announced
I was Associated!

FIAP Distinctions 2018 - 2019

The application season for FIAP distinctions will open on 01 November 2018 and will close on 28 February 2019.
As in previous years, applications can be made and the relevant fee paid via the IPF website www.irishphoto.ie
Anyone who is considering applying for FIAP distinctions this year should familiarise themselves with both the IPF and FIAP requirements which are outlined on the website – and in particular, should note the change which has been made in relation the FIAP Life Card. Full details were in the October IPF Newsletter and are on the website.
A summary of the changes is –
FIAP now requires that anyone who applies for the AFIAP distinction MUST already be a holder of a FIAP Life Card. This card must be applied for BEFORE applying for the AFIAP distinction and can be done on the FIAP website – link: is in the Newsletter and is on the IPF Website.
If you already hold an AFIAP distinction and wish to have a new FIAP Life Card to reflect your new distinction – then you can apply via the FIAP website AFTER you have your new distinction Certificate and Pin.

FIAP Life Card

The Following outlines the purpose of the FIAP Life Card and some very significant changes to the application process which are coming into effect from 01 January 2019. It is very important that anyone who is thinking of applying for a FIAP distinction during the next IPF registration time frame familiarise themselves with this.
The FIAP Liaison Officer can be contacted via the IPF website and will be able to answer any queries.

The FIAP Life Card is a credit card sized identification document for members. This card serves as an ID card and carries a unique ID Number that will stay with you for life. Although having no status outside FIAP, the card can be very useful to show as a photographic credential.
FIAP rules require that the holder of a FIAP distinction must also be the holder of a FIAP Life Card. You must also be the holder of one of these cards to attend any FIAP Congress, AGM or FIAP Photo Meeting.
As from 01/01/2019, it will be compulsory for applications for the card to be made via the FIAP Platform at- www.myfiap.net/user/register/fp
When you open this web page there is a video explaining the process in detail. There is a charge of €50, plus postage and PayPal charges.
You MUST pay using PayPal. If you do not have a PayPal account you can still make a payment as a “guest” using your credit card. Though I think that most people who participate in International Salons pay using PayPal and more than likely have an account.
  • Unless you already hold a FIAP Life Card, you will need to obtain one to make your first application for a distinction. You will, therefore, have to obtain your card BEFORE you can apply for a FIAP Distinction.
  • If you are already the holder of a FIAP Life Card then, if you wish to have it updated (eg, after receiving a new distinction certificate) you can do so via the above process. In this case, there is a charge of €25 plus postage and PayPal charges.
  • If a card requires replacement after being lost or stolen or requires amendment (eg, change of name) then the charge of €50 plus postage and PayPal charges will apply.
  • A FIAP Life Card can also be obtained via the above process without applying for a FIAP Distinction
Whilst the new process does not become compulsory until 01/01/2019, it is available now to obtain your new FIAP Life Card.
As the date falls in the middle of the IPFs registration process for the 2019 batch of applications IPF applicants seeking to register for distinctions applications this time round must use the new online system for obtaining their FIAP Life Cards. You will no longer be able to apply via the IPF website to the FIAP Liaison Officer and he, in turn, will no longer be able to apply on your behalf.

To preserve the integrity and high standing of these honorary awards, the number granted each year will be strictly limited. The final decision on granting each Award will be made by the IPF Awards Committee, which shall be comprised of six members of the IPF Council including a secretary elected by the Awards Committee and chaired by the IPF President.
