Hello again and welcome to our November Newsletter 2018. Autumn has surely arrived with all the landscape awash with all the beautiful autumnal colours which are always welcome, but it seems winter is not so far away either with the drop in temperatures and the winter chill in the air of late.

IPF Newsletter - November - 2018

IPF
As we move into November my colleagues and I on the IPF Council are working behind the scenes on our Competitions Review document which is slowly but surely progressing and will be circulated to all clubs on its completion, more about that in the coming weeks. We are currently preparing for the next two big events coming your way. On Sunday, November 18th the National Shield will take place in Palmerstown with all details over on the IPF website www.irishphoto.ie . Our coordinator for this year’s event Patrick Kavanagh has been working hard behind the scenes organising and putting the event together. With the members of Palmerstown Camera Club the event promises to be a great day and hopefully, we will have another great entry this year from clubs across the country.
Following on from that on Saturday, November 24th the last Distinction sitting of 2018 will take place in Thurles under the stewardship of Bob Morrison Distinction Secretary and the Distinctions Committee chaired by Des Clinton who has been coordinating Distinction Sittings throughout the year. This event will be supported by members of Thurles Camera Club who will be assisting in the background and I would like to acknowledge their support and all the clubs involved earlier in the year Carlow, Kilkenny, Mullingar, Mountmellick & Portlaoise Camera Clubs who generously assisted in Distinction sittings held in March, May & September of this year.
On another note for the second year running I had the pleasure of attending the 36th IPF Audio Visual Championships in Áras an Chronin in Clondalkin, Co. Dublin on Sunday, October 21st to present the prizes to the winners in the various categories. It was another most enjoyable event and watching the winning sequences really showed the work that goes into the entries. The coordinator of this event is Council Member Lillian Webb (Hon Secretary of the AV Committee) and like all the other coordinators and officers of the IPF she did a very professional job and ensured the event ran smoothly and efficiently.
My most recent outing representing the Federation was to launch a beautiful new book by well-known Cork based photographer John Hooton on Tuesday, October 30th. Dublin Camera Club hosted the launch and it coincides with a month-long exhibition of a collection of photographs from John’s book titled “ Ireland the way we were” at the Eddie Chandler Gallery on Camden Street, Dublin. It’s his third book to publish and a beautiful collection of photographs and stories demonstrating an Ireland of a different age that is almost gone.

Until next time,
Kind Regards,
Dominic Reddin FIPF
President
Irish Photographic Federation.

Celtic Challange Report

The Celtic Challenge is a fun competition between the Celtic Nations of these islands.
It was started over 20 years ago by the late Sean Casey of Ireland and Rod Wheelans of Scotland initially as a competition between the two counties but has now expanded to include the other photographic federations from the Celtic Nations.
This year it was hosted by the Northern Ireland Photographic Association in Newtownards.

This year the IPF received a total of 536 points - up from 512 last year.
Our images scored highly and we received the following awards
- Best PDI - for Marek Biegalski of Malahide Camera Club- Best Colour Print - for Vadim Lee of Drogheda Photographic Club - who was also awarded the Best Overall Image. The IPF was placed 2nd in the competition
The winner this year - for the first time ever - was NIPA

Our congratulations go to all those who represented the IPF, and to the organisers from NIPA for a very smoothly run event.

Thanks also to those who travelled and to our selectors Gabriel O'Shaughnessy, Des Clinton and Paul Stanley.

An invitation will now be extended to the Welsh Federation to see if they will host the 2019 Celtic Challenge

The judge this year was Robert Millin MFIAP FBPE EFIAP/p DPAGB MPSA SPSA GPU Hermes – of the Wigan 10 photo group.

FIAP Distinctions 2018 - 2019

The application season for FIAP distinctions will open on 01 November 2018 and will close on 28 February 2019.
As in previous years, applications can be made and the relevant fee paid via the IPF website www.irishphoto.ie
Anyone who is considering applying for FIAP distinctions this year should familiarise themselves with both the IPF and FIAP requirements which are outlined on the website – and in particular, should note the change which has been made in relation the FIAP Life Card. Full details were in the October IPF Newsletter and are on the website.
A summary of the changes is –
FIAP now requires that anyone who applies for the AFIAP distinction MUST already be a holder of a FIAP Life Card. This card must be applied for BEFORE applying for the AFIAP distinction and can be done on the FIAP website – link: is in the Newsletter and is on the IPF Website.
If you already hold an AFIAP distinction and wish to have a new FIAP Life Card to reflect your new distinction – then you can apply via the FIAP website AFTER you have your new distinction Certificate and Pin.

FIAP Life Card

The Following outlines the purpose of the FIAP Life Card and some very significant changes to the application process which are coming into effect from 01 January 2019. It is very important that anyone who is thinking of applying for a FIAP distinction during the next IPF registration time frame familiarise themselves with this.
The FIAP Liaison Officer can be contacted via the IPF website and will be able to answer any queries.
------- 0 ------
The FIAP Life Card is a credit card sized identification document for members. This card serves as an ID card and carries a unique ID Number that will stay with you for life. Although having no status outside FIAP, the card can be very useful to show as a photographic credential.
FIAP rules require that the holder of a FIAP distinction must also be the holder of a FIAP Life Card. You must also be the holder of one of these cards to attend any FIAP Congress, AGM or FIAP Photo Meeting.
As from 01/01/2019, it will be compulsory for applications for the card to be made via the FIAP Platform at- www.myfiap.net/user/register/fp
When you open this web page there is a video explaining the process in detail. There is a charge of €50, plus postage and PayPal charges.
You MUST pay using PayPal. If you do not have a PayPal account you can still make a payment as a “guest” using your credit card. Though I think that most people who participate in International Salons pay using PayPal and more than likely have an account.
  • Unless you already hold a FIAP Life Card, you will need to obtain one to make your first application for a distinction. You will, therefore, have to obtain your card BEFORE you can apply for a FIAP Distinction.
  • If you are already the holder of a FIAP Life Card then, if you wish to have it updated (eg, after receiving a new distinction certificate) you can do so via the above process. In this case, there is a charge of €25 plus postage and PayPal charges.
  • If a card requires replacement after being lost or stolen or requires amendment (eg, change of name) then the charge of €50 plus postage and PayPal charges will apply.
  • A FIAP Life Card can also be obtained via the above process without applying for a FIAP Distinction
Whilst the new process does not become compulsory until 01/01/2019, it is available now to obtain your new FIAP Life Card.
As the date falls in the middle of the IPFs registration process for the 2019 batch of applications IPF applicants seeking to register for distinctions applications this time round must use the new online system for obtaining their FIAP Life Cards. You will no longer be able to apply via the IPF website to the FIAP Liaison Officer and he, in turn, will no longer be able to apply on your behalf.

AV2018 - report by Lilian Webb,

IPF AV Group Co-ordinator

Report by Lilian Webb, AIPF, ARPS, IPF AV Co-Ordinator of the
Irish Photographic Federation’s 36th National Audio-Visual Championships & 1st Open Photo Harmony Competition held at Aras Chronain Ionad Cultuir, Clondalkin on Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st October 2018.

A very successful and full weekend was enjoyed by all - competitors - winners - and those not successful this time - and attendees from England, Northern Ireland, Ulster, Munster & Leinster.

Bev Tyrer & Alan Tyrer, DPAGB/AV, ARPS had a very intense weekend judging and commenting on all the entries in the Nationals - Novice, Intermediate, Club & Advanced totalling 19 entries from Enniscorthy Camera Club, Clare Camera Club, Shannon Camera Club, Breffni Photography Club, Celbridge Camera Club, Offshoot Photographic Society, Bangor & North Down Camera Club & An Oige Photographic Group. There were 41 sequences in the Photo Harmony competition, which were between 3 & 5 minutes duration. They came from Netherlands, Ireland - north and south, Norway, Wales, New Zealand, England and South Africa.

Without hardly catching a breath, following the last session of judging, Bev & Alan showed several of their sequences and explaining what inspired them - thus giving a great flavour of their work.

After lunch on Sunday, there were three applications for distinctions in AV - and Margaret Finlay, AIPF, from Palmerstown Camera Club was successful. Well done.

In conjunction with the weekend, there was an exhibition of prints from Palmerstown Camera Club on display, a raffle to help with the expenses and a dinner in the Green Isle Hotel for 25 on Saturday night. Several also met up with Alan & Bev for meals on the Friday & Sunday nights -all in all, a very sociable event.

IPF AV Group Committee with Dom Reddin, President, IPF, presenting Lilian Webb, IPF AV Co-Ordinator with flowers, 21st October, 2018.
At the conclusion of the festival, Lilian Webb, as Hon. Secretary/Hon. Treasurer of the IPF AV Group Committee, and on behalf of the Committee, read a citation and presented Alan Lyons, AIPF with a “World Cup” to mark his being the projectionist of the IPF AV Nationals for 20 years - half the life of the IPF itself. Alan along with Frank Malthouse, Joe Webb, Lilian Webb & the late Kieran O’Loughlin formed the committee in 1998.

Alan has overseen the entries of sequences from Slides & Tapes, to Digital on discs, memory sticks & wetransfer.com. Since International & Open Sections have been added, Alan has received sequences from all continents except Asia & Antarctica! Alan also set up the East Leinster AV Group and continues to provide expert advice on sound, vision and Photoshop. If it wasn’t for Alan Lyons, we wouldn’t have been able to see and hear the sequences over the last 20 years. We have now welcomed two new ladies on to the committee - Maria O’Brien & Yvonne Acheson, LIPF, both from Shannon Camera Club.

Thanks to everyone who contributed in anyway to make the weekend a success - those who looked after the lunches, judges, reception, photographs, lights, raffle, dinner, MC, Distinctions’ Judges, providing and writing the certificates and our President, Dominic Reddin, for attending and presenting all the awards.

Sad week for Carlow Photographic Society

It is a very sad time in Carlow Photographic Society, Austin Kinsella, a member of CPS from the first year the club was formed back in 2003, after battling with ill health for some time, sadly lost his battle on the 26th of October 2018.
Austin was a committee member almost from the start, serving as Chairperson on several occasion’s, he was involved in drafting our club constitution, as well as been our webmaster and continued to upgrade our website right up to a few weeks ago.
But more important he was a friend to all members, with his sharp wit and a big smile he was always ready to encourage members both, new or old, strive to improve the standard of their photography, by sharing his vast knowledge, especially when it came to his love of nature and birds.
His passing will leave a large void in Carlow Photographic Society, as we are really one big family with one thing in common Photography. Our sympathies are with his wife Siobhan, children and family at this very sad time in their lives.
Rest In Peace Austin, a good friend to all in CPS, one of Nature’s True Gentlemen.

This achievement comes from lots of hard work by all club members of DPS who submitted some excellent images and also from the clubs selectors, who worked hard to pick only the best images to be entered for this competition. The selectors for DPS this year were Damien O'Malley, Denis Whelehan, Tony McDonnell & Dave Martin.

John Hooton " Publishes his 3rd Book

"Ireland The Way We Were"

Recently in Dublin Camera Club John Hooton launched his third book, Ireland The Way We Were. John thanked the chairperson of Dublin Camera Club, the committee and its members for facilitating this launch and the exhibition of some of the images from the book. He also thanked the President of the IPF, Mr Dominic Reddin for officially launching the book on the night.
45178874_1794581730591247_4989203438903492608_n
Speaking to John he said, the photographs in my newest book, Ireland The Way We Were brings with them rich memories of a past that is almost gone and details of an everyday life that was simple and yet profound – a life now obscured by the passage of time, but which brings alive a people and a past recalled with fondness.

The Sacred Heart lamp, the settle, the bellows, the crane and many more, all symbols of the past. Many of these items were left behind as the doors were shut for the final time on houses throughout Ireland.

“Gone are the old folk, the house stands deserted, No light in the window, no welcome at the door” The Old House, Fred O’Connor

What prompted me to put this collection together was a wish to document and record for posterity those important elements of a cultured and historic past that are, if not totally gone, disappearing fast. A trip to the Blasket Islands some years ago was the trigger, that started me photographing some of the old houses on the mainland. The houses, now silent, whisper of a people long gone, but who still live on in our memories. For me, it was important to step back into time and to record and celebrate a time and people from which the present generation has drawn much that continues to be valued and cherished. Through taking these photographs, I grew to have enormous respect for the strength of character, resilience, faith and loyalty that the daily chores demanded of previous generations.

Camera Nikon D3
Lens Nikon 24mm-70mm
Computer Apple Mac

All the images for the book were taken using available light and a tripod. Typical settings were F8 – F11. Shutter speeds varied from 2 seconds to 30 seconds. White balance set at 5,000. ISO 200. My technique is very simple and I control the available light by blocking off windows when needed. That’s basically it….

An exhibition of some of the images is currently on view in Dublin Camera Club, Camden Street and from the 1st December, the exhibition will be in Cork Airport.
