Welcome to the September 2019 newsletter of the Irish Photographic Federation. I hope you all have had a good summer, the weather wasn’t as kind as other years but you have to take what you get and hopefully, the next couple of months will be better as all the great Autumn colours emerge and more photographic opportunities will hopefully be available to us all.
|
|
|
|
We took a break with our monthly newsletter but as the months have crept by were glad to be touching base with you all again.
|
|
Were back in Carlow again on September 14th for the fourth Distinction sitting of 2019. A Visual Theatre in Co Carlow is a great venue and we look forward to meeting all those who have applied for their Distinction and wish them good luck.
|
|
In the coming months, we will host the remaining events for the calendar year which will include the 37th IPF National AV Championships at Aras Chronain on Saturday & Sunday, 19th & 20th October. Our thanks to Lillian Webb and her AV team for coordinating the event. The AV judges this year are from England and we welcome Howard Bagshaw, who will be judging for the first time and Ron Davies.

We return to Co Kilkenny this year where we will host the National Shield on Sunday 17th November. Our judges for this year’s event are Bob Given, Catchlight, Anne Cassidy, Enniskillen & Judy Boyle, Drogheda. Our thanks to our new co-ordinator for the event Kilkenny’s own Andrew Magan.

Finally, as we move into the last quarter of the year I want to thank the Judges Committee who have been working behind the scenes organising judges for the National Shield and the 2020 Photographer of the Year & Nature Photographer of the Year Competitions. Also thanks to our co-ordinator for the event Julie Corcoran who is putting the final pieces together for this event and the Regional Rounds, further information will be available by the end of September and advertised on the IPF Website and Social Media pages.

We are delighted to announce the first of many RPS events for the Éire region will take place on Saturday, September 7th (9.30am-5.30pm) at St.Peter’s on North Main St, Cork City. This event is the first in a series with more events taking place throughout the country over the coming year or so, culminating in an AGM, details of which will be announced later in the season.
|

Advise on potential RPS distinction panels is available throughout the day from current RPS assessors and is available for all levels; LRPS, ARPS and FRPS. You do not need to prebook to speak to an advisor.

We are also delighted to welcome Barker Photographic and PermaJet to this event. Paddy Barker and his team have a wealth of knowledge on all types of camera equipment so take the opportunity to have a chat. PermaJet will be supplying paper samples for Michael's print talk so you can see in real-time how paper choice affects your final print.

In addition throughout the day, there will be a digital exhibition featuring the work of the members of our region. Region members - please check your email for details on submitting images.
|

Content is being compiled for the website at the moment so please bear with us as we work on it over the next few weeks. An open letter to all affiliated clubs to the Irish Photographic Federation
|
I just want to touch base with everyone after the summer. I’m the co-ordinator of the National Shield Competition
which will be held in Hotel Kilkenny, Kilkenny (R95 KP08) on Sunday 17th November 2019.
|
The Competition:
The IPF National Shield is an annual inter-club competition which is open to all clubs who are affiliated to the IPF.
Only those photographers competing at the non-advanced level are eligible to be represented in this competition.
This competition showcases the work of photographers from clubs all over the country. Each competing club may
submit a panel of colour prints and/or a panel of monochrome prints. Note that only those clubs who enter both
sections will be eligible for the overall award. It’s a highly competitive day but also filled with good humour and
stories as colleagues and friends catch up.
(2019 Entry fee €85)

Eligibility:
The National Shield competition is for those photographers competing at a non-advanced level only with a limit of a
maximum of one image per panel per photographer. In other words, one image on the colour print panel and one
on the monochrome print panel maximum per photographer.
Participating photographers must be eligible to compete at levels as defined below.
Each participating club may enter up to TWO images from LIPF holders, provided that they do not fit into any of the
definitions as laid down by the next section.
Photographers who come under any of the following categories will be deemed to be ineligible for this competition:

Anyone who has received an IPF Associateship or Fellowship distinction or similar from FIAP, the PSA, the
RPS or any other similar distinctions;
Anyone who has been awarded more than one IPF medal in IPF national competitions;
Anyone who had an image that was chosen to represent the IPF in international competitions;
Anyone who has received acceptances with five or more image titles, or any award including a ribbon, at
FIAP and/or PSA recognised salons;
Anyone whose club considers him or her to be of advanced standard in any discipline of photography;
Anyone who holds a diploma or degree in photography from any recognised educational institution in
Ireland or elsewhere.

Judging itself is private, however, judges provide commentary on all panels prior to the awards ceremony.
While judging is taking place, typically, one or more talks or workshops are organised for the visiting & competing
photographers.

The Presentation:
Bernard Geraghty from Landscape Tours is giving our first presentation:
Bernard's job has taken him all over Ireland, North to Iceland, Norway, the Arctic Circle, Scotland and the
Faroe Islands, South, to the Italian Dolomites, Tenerife, Switzerland and Africa and West to the U.S and
Canada.
Ian Carruthers is our second presenter:
Ian’s main areas of interest would be landscape, meteorology and astrophotography, with a particular interest
in capturing rare events. He has been to America to study/chase severe storms including tornadoes, to the Isle of
Skye to experience its stunning landscape, Iceland and the arctic for the aurora borealis and to Tenerife to
witness the clear dark sky in all its glory.

Audio Visual Group - News

The committee met on 27th April and the details of the IPF AV Nationals are as follows:-
|
Venue: Aras Chronain, Watery Lane, Clondalkin, Dublin 22.
Dates: Saturday, 19th & Sunday, 20th October 2019.
|
Judges: Ron Davies & Howard Bagshaw, both from England, who are award-winning sequence makers and international judges.
|
This will be the 37th IPF National AV championships and we will also be hosting the 7th International Audio-Visual competition. As usual, there will be - Novice, Intermediate, Club & Advanced categories in the National championships. There may also be distinctions in AV judged over the weekend and it is hoped to see some sequences from both judges - so an action-packed weekend. When the rules and conditions, entry forms and identification sheets are to hand, these will be sent to all AV workers and to the website - hopefully in June.
Dates for your diary - NOW - closing date for entry forms and fees will be Friday, 13th September and the closing date for sequences, the following Friday, 20th September and applications for distinctions (through the website) will close on Friday, 6th September. So, now is the time to get working on your sequences! |

Ita Martin was the winner of the IPF Gold Medal In the IPF National Portraiture Competition, Paul Reidy came 2nd and Sigita Playdon came 3rd.
|
|
Both Paul and Sigita received IPF Certificates. Paul Reidy was also the winner of the IPF Gold Medal for the Best Overall image in the Open Competition.

"The following amendment to the Peter Slattery Memorial Award was agreed by the IPF Council. In order to assist clubs who have several qualifying members they wish to nominate for this award and qualify according to the notes and guidelines on the IPF website, permission has been granted to nominate three members in the year of their first application only and this amendment only applies up until the AGM in 2022."

IPF Awards should not be confused with IPF Distinctions. Awards are made to individuals who have served above and beyond at club or higher level over a significant period. To preserve the integrity and high standing of these honorary awards, the number granted each year will be strictly limited. The final decision on granting each Award will be made by the IPF Awards Committee, which shall be comprised of six members of the IPF Council including a secretary elected by the Awards Committee and chaired by the IPF President.
