IPF Newsletter - October - 2019

A cháirde
Welcome to the October 2019 newsletter of the Irish Photographic Federation. As Autumn sets in I always look forward to getting out and about to capture the Autumnal colours that will be on display over the next couple of weeks as the leaves change their colour and the countryside becomes a beautiful array of magic.
IPF
We were back in Carlow in September for the 4th Distinction sitting of the year. Congratulations to all those who were awarded a Distinction on the day, to those who weren’t successful please do try again and take note of what the assessors commented on and advised on the day. Our thanks to Carlow Photographic Society members who ensured the day went smoothly with their support throughout the day. A special note also to Distinction Chairman Des Clinton and Vice Chair Paul Stanley assisted by Distinction Secretary Bob Morrison who works tirelessly in the background to continue to make the Distinction Sittings great events and one of the highlights for photographers throughout the year. Thanks also to Sabrina Dunny who prepared all the certificates in advance of the day.

Our very own Vice President Liam Beattie carried out the duties on the day of presenting all the successful applicants with their certs and pins and did so in an attentive and professional manner.

In October I’m off to the IPF National AV Championships at Aras Chronain on Saturday & Sunday, 19th & 20th, always a great event with an excellent exhibition of photography in a beautiful setting. Our thanks to Lillian Webb and her AV team for coordinating the event and work tirelessly to ensure a great weekend for those attending. A highly recommended event.

This year’s National Shield takes place in Kilkenny on Sunday 17th November. Our thanks to our new co-ordinator for the event Kilkenny’s own Andrew Magan who has been working hard over the last couple of weeks in preparation for the event. All information on the event is currently advertised on the IPF Website.

Entries for the 2020 Photographer of the Year & Nature Photographer of the year Competitions will be live from Fri October 25th, our thanks to co-ordinator for the event Julie Corcoran who is putting the final pieces together for this event and the Regional Rounds which will take place in the various regions in the coming months, all information will be advertised on the IPF Website and Social Media pages.

Ross McKelvey FIPF MFIAP MPAGB EFIAP/p was recently announced as No.1 in The World in The "Who's Who in Photography 2018" for Large Monoprints by the Photographic Society of America (PSA). This was the second year in a row that Ross was named as No.1 in large monoprints. As a bonus, his image "Mischkah" was published on the front cover of the "Who's Who" publication that went out all over the World to participating photographers! Ross was also named 3rd in the World in Large Colour Prints for 2018. The data is collected by the PSA from International Salons throughout the year. Ross is an assessor on the IPF Distinctions sittings and a popular guest speaker at camera clubs all over the UK and Ireland. He founded Catchlight Camera Club in Belfast in 2012, the Club that has managed to win the IPF Club Championships for the last 3 years. Catchlight CC also won the FIAP World Cup for Camera Clubs in 2017. A force to be reckoned with......!

Audio Visual Group - News

AV2019 by Lilian Webb, AIPF, ARPS - IPF AV Co-Ordinator.
The next event organised by the Irish Photographic Federation is the IPF National Audio Visual Championships.

AV2019 takes place in Aras Chronain Irish Cultural Centre, Watery Lane, Clondalkin, Dublin 22 on Saturday, 19th & Sunday, 20th October 2019. Our judges from England are Howard Bagshaw, ARPS, MPAGB., who will be judging for the first time and Ron Davies, FRPS, FIPF, EFIAP, FACI (M), who judged many years ago in Mallow in the analogue days! There will be a meal on the Saturday night nearby and it is also usual for the committee, judges and others to meet up on the Friday night for dinner and also on the Sunday after the event.

There is an admission charge for non-entrants to the event - as is usual for AV festivals worldwide - €8.00 per session, €12.00 per day or €20.00 for the weekend. Soup and sandwiches at €5.00 are available each day for lunch and there is tea/coffee on arrival.

This year we will be starting a half an hour earlier so registration will be from 9 a.m., with a prompt start at 10 a.m., on both days. There will be comfort breaks as well as for lunch each day. The competition will continue on Sunday morning and afternoon and will conclude with the presentation of awards.

This is the 37th IPF National Audio Visual Championships and the 10th year to be held in Aras Chronain. Also this year we are hosting the 7th International AV Competition. Sequences are now in - and there are entries in each of the national categories - Novice, Intermediate, Club & Advanced representing 5 camera clubs/societies. In the International section, there are entries from South Africa, Australia & New Zealand, Italy, Norway, Netherlands & Slovak Republic, England & Wales and Ireland north and south!

Though the weekend hosts two competitions, it is a very sociable occasion. I would encourage any who have not experienced Audio Visual - this specialised branch of photography - to come along. Of course, the committee look forward to seeing all our regular friends and entrants especially those travelling across the Irish Sea and across the border as well!

IPF Request for Digital Images

The IPF was asked to do an exchange with the Italian Federation.
The theme of the exchange will be Irish Landscapes - we send them 40 images PDI on this theme. We are interpreting this to also mean seascapes/coastal/ not just fields and mountains.

People should send images to Gabriel O Shaughnessy @ gaboshoko@gmail.com
Images should be sized to be 3600 pixels on the longest side at 300ppi - to allow for good quality prints - which the folks in Italy will produce.
Images are to be with Gabriel O Shaughnessy by Sunday 27th October.

IPF Awards

Did you know that the IPF has an honorary award system available?

IMPORTANT.

"The following amendment to the Peter Slattery Memorial Award was agreed by the IPF Council. In order to assist clubs who have several qualifying members they wish to nominate for this award and qualify according to the notes and guidelines on the IPF website, permission has been granted to nominate three members in the year of their first application only and this amendment only applies up until the AGM in 2022."

IPF Awards should not be confused with IPF Distinctions. Awards are made to individuals who have served above and beyond at club or higher level over a significant period. To preserve the integrity and high standing of these honorary awards, the number granted each year will be strictly limited. The final decision on granting each Award will be made by the IPF Awards Committee, which shall be comprised of six members of the IPF Council including a secretary elected by the Awards Committee and chaired by the IPF President.
