IPF Newsletter - November - 2019

A cháirde
Here we are into November and the winter weather has surely arrived and the clock changing back certainly doesn’t make it any easier with the dark evenings. It feels like the year is slipping by, however, we must plough on and we still have some major events coming our way this month. Therefore again I would just like to sincerely acknowledge the work of the coordinators of all the Irish Photographic Federations events and the PR and advertising that these events get through our Webmaster Gerry Kerr and Newsletter Editor and Social Media Officer Liam Beattie.
IPF
On Sunday, November 17th we have the National Shield to look forward to which takes place in Hotel Kilkenny, Co Kilkenny under the stewardship of coordinator Andy Magan and the assistance of members of the IPF Council and Kilkenny Photographic Society. Always a great day out with clubs from across the country competing.
We head back to Thurles on Saturday, November 30th for the fifth and final Distinction Sitting of the year under the stewardship of Bob Morrison, and the Distinctions Committee chaired by Des Clinton. This event will be supported by members of Thurles Camera Club who will be assisting in the background. It’s important to acknowledge the various clubs support at these Distinctions, throughout the year especially Carlow, Mullingar, Mountmellick & Portlaoise Camera Clubs who ably assisted in Distinction sittings held in March, May, June & September.
The Photographer of the Year & Nature Photographer of the Year Competition will take place in Carlow in February 2020 with the regional rounds taking place throughout January 2020 in the various regions. The completion is open now with all the information available over on the IPF Website www.irishphoto.ie. Our thanks to our Coordinator Julie Corcoran for the trojan amount of work she has been doing behind the scenes getting us to this stage and in her preparation for the National Finals.

I had the pleasure of attending for the third time the IPF Audio Visual Championships in Áras an Chronin in Clondalkin, Co. Dublin on Sunday, October 20th to present the prizes to the winners in the various categories. It was another very enjoyable event and watching the winning sequences really showed the work that goes into the entries. The coordinator of this event is Council Member Lillian Webb (Hon Secretary of the AV Committee) and like all the other coordinators and officers of the IPF, she did a very professional job and ensured the event ran smoothly and efficiently.
Finally our extended congratulations to fellow Council member and PSA Representative for the IPF Denis Whelehan who has been elected a Fellow PSA for his service to the Society as PSA Membership Director and Liaison Officer to the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The accolade was awarded to Denis in recognition for his leadership and long-time service to the Irish Photographic Federation especially as an organizer, competitions coordinator, and Archives Officer, and for his service to the Dundalk Photographic Society. Congratulations Denis,

Until next time,
Kind Regards,
Dominic Reddin FIPF
President Irish Photographic Federation

POTY & NPOTY Press Release

IPF POTY_NPOTY20 Entries Open 2020
Canon Prize Draw 2020

Sparkling Showcase of Club Photography in Ireland

Entries are now open for the Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) Photographer and Nature Photographer of the Year 2020 through the IPF Website.

Open to members of affiliated clubs; these competitions are a unique fixture on the IPF Calendar as they seek to recognise the talents of individual club photographers.

Entries will close at midnight on Sunday, 24th November 2019.

There are some changes to the format of this year’s competitions based on feedback from previous years. Full details can be found in the competitions section of the IPF website or in the top right hand corner of the competition registration pages. There you will also find a helpful video tutorial on how to use the entry software.

The Regional qualifying rounds will take place in January 2020. Details as follows; Mid-East Region 11th January Grand Hotel Malahide (prints collected the week before), Mid-West Region 25th January Maldron Hotel Portlaoise, North-East Region 11th January The Workhouse Carrickmacross and the SACC Region 25th January Horse & Jockey Tipperary (print collection points across the region before the round, see the SACC website for details).
The finals are due to be held on the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd February 2020 at the Talbot Hotel, Carlow.

We are very grateful to our sponsors; One Photographic, Camera Filters Ireland, Explore Light Workshops and Canon Ireland, many of whom will have trade stands at the finals again this year.
Canon Ireland will once again be providing a mirrorless camera for our prize draw (remember tickets can only be purchased with your entries; so make sure to tick that prize draw box after uploading your images!)

The success of the competitions depend entirely on the hard work of the volunteers who give of their time freely, year on year, hosting the regional rounds and finals. Their dedication to photography in Ireland is matched only by the entrants, who submit their work each year in increasing numbers; making the IPF Photographer and Nature Photographer of the Year competitions a sparkling showcase of club photography in Ireland!

More details can be found on the IPF website, www.irishphoto.ie or on the IPF Facebook page.

FIAP Distinctions 2019-2020

The application season for FIAP distinctions will open on 01 November 2019 and will close on 28 February 2020.
The exception to this is that applications for MFIAP will close on 22 December 2019. This is to allow the IPF Liaison Officer to prepare the application and forward it to FIAP by their deadline of 21 January 2020.
The Liaison Officer requests that anyone thinking of applying for any FIAP distinction should first contact him – via the IPF Website Contact page. Please select “FIAP Distinctions” from the dropdown list. This is to ensure that everyone has the most up-to-date information.

As in previous years the initial applications can be made and the relevant fee paid via the IPF website www.irishphoto.ie
Anyone who is considering applying for FIAP distinctions this year should familiarise themselves with both the IPF and FIAP requirements which are outlined on the website – and in particular should note the changes which have been made in relation the FIAP Life Card.
A summary of the changes is – FIAP now require that anyone who applies for the AFIAP distinction MUST already be a holder of a FIAP Life Card. This card must be applied for BEFORE applying for the AFIAP distinction and can be done via the FIAP website – link is in the Newsletter and is on the IPF Website.
If you already hold an AFIAP distinction and wish to have a new FIAP Life Card to reflect your new distinction – then you can apply via the FIAP website AFTER you have your new distinction Certificate and Pin.

Report of the Irish Photographic Federation’s 37th National Audio Visual Championships

& 7th International Audio-Visual Competition

The above was held in Aras Chronain, Clondalkin, Dublin on Saturday & Sunday, 19th & 20th October 2019. Our judges were Howard Bagshaw, ARPS, MPAGB & Ron Davies, FRPS, FIPF, EFIAP, FACI(M). The sequences for the Nationals were sent to both judges in advance and they commented after each sequence .. and very kindly gave these to the authors afterwards. There were entries in the Novice, Intermediate, Club & Advanced - 16 in all - down on last year - and for the first time in many years there was no 1st time entrant. These represented Shannon Camera Club, Celbridge Camera Club, Breffni Photography Club, Offshoot Photographic Society & Bangor & North Down Camera Club.

There were 44 entries in the International Competition - some of those had not entered before - they covered Ireland - north and south, England, Wales, Norway, Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Slovakia & South Africa. As happens internationally, these were not commented on - and because of the high volume of entries - there was, unfortunately, no time to see any sequences of either Howard or Ron.

It was great having Dominic Reddin, FIPF, President of the Irish Photographic Federation present to hand out the awards at the end of the festival and accompanied by the Vice President, Liam Beattie and Andy Magan, National Shield Co-Ordinator.

Unfortunately, attendances for whatever reason were down this year and this will reflect on the net expenditure - when the books are balanced! I suppose Ireland playing New Zealand on Saturday morning did not help!

Apart from the serious nature of the festival, there is always great camaraderie between the contestants and supporters. I was delighted that we had 6 over from across the Irish Sea and a number of our NIPA friends from across the border. 15 of us enjoyed a meal in the Maldron Hotel on Friday night and there were 17 of us in the Maldron on Sunday night before all headed back to their destinations. In between, we had our Gala dinner in Joel’s Restaurant - with 25 attendings.

This was our 10th year in Aras Chronain and the venue makes it much easier for Alan Lyons who is in charge of the receiving and checking of all entries, producing the times of the sessions, sending the national entries to our judges and last but not least being in charge of the showing of all sequences over the weekend - as the facilities are there for sound and vision.

Thanks to Denis Whelehan & Sabrina Dunny for producing the medals, certificates and ribbons respectively and to Gerry Kerr & Liam Beattie for promoting the event on the IPF website and in Oscailt.

As well as thanking Alan on the IPF AV Group Committee, I wish to thank the other members in no particular order! Maria O’Brien looked after the judges, Yvonne Acheson looked after the money and tickets for lunches on both days and assisted with the raffle. Rita Nolan not only manned the reception desk but looked after the raffle. Margaret Finlay was our MC for the weekend. Edwin Bailey, with the help of Frances, looked after the money for the gala dinner. Edwin will also produce a book of AV2019 as he has done for the past number of years, which is a great record of the event. Finally, Brendan O’Sullivan, chairman, kept me right, and also looked after all the contacts with Aras Chronain and he along with Rita booked the venue for the Gala Dinner.

There are always a couple of others not on the committee, which I and the committee would be lost without. Sheamus O’Donoghue once again was the “official” photographer. In due course, his photographs will appear in the yearbook and on the IPF website. So, this year, we acknowledged this by giving small tokens of our appreciation to Philomena Lyons who has for the past 10 years in Aras Chronain and many years before that manned the reception desk and is the friendly face you see when you arrive. The other person nobody sees as Noel Doyle has been up on the gallery in Aras Chronain manning the lights as to when he needs to keep us in the dark or in the light. He again has been doing this for the past 10 years. So, as well as a token he received a torch!

As this is the day after the event, I hope I have not left anything out!

Advance notice: There will be an AV Exchange with Essex AV Group in Treacys Oakwood Hotel, Shannon, Co. Clare on Saturday, 14th December at 2 p.m. All invited. Admission free! Essex will be showing a selection of 12 AV’s representing the IPF on 6th November.

Lilian Webb, AIPF, ARPS - IPF AV Co-Ordinator. 21st October 2019.

IPF Awards

Did you know that the IPF has an honorary award system available?

IMPORTANT.

"The following amendment to the Peter Slattery Memorial Award was agreed by the IPF Council. In order to assist clubs who have several qualifying members they wish to nominate for this award and qualify according to the notes and guidelines on the IPF website, permission has been granted to nominate three members in the year of their first application only and this amendment only applies up until the AGM in 2022."
IPF Awards should not be confused with IPF Distinctions. Awards are made to individuals who have served above and beyond at club or higher level over a significant period. To preserve the integrity and high standing of these honorary awards, the number granted each year will be strictly limited. The final decision on granting each Award will be made by the IPF Awards Committee, which shall be comprised of six members of the IPF Council including a secretary elected by the Awards Committee and chaired by the IPF President.
