Tommy Duffy - Presentation

Tommy Duffy AIPF

Tommy Duffy has been a member of the Drogheda Photographic Club for over 30 years. In that time Tommy always was on the club’s committee and has been Hon Secretary for the past 19 years. He is always a willing volunteer every time there is work to be done especially when it comes to organise or hang an exhibition. Tommy got his AIPF with a very creative colour panel, photographed with slide film and printed by him using the colour cibachrome process. Tommy also had a keen interest in audiovisual photography which complimented his photography and a love for music.
Tommy was thrilled to get the Peter Slattery medal as Peter had lectured many times in Drogheda Photographic Club and Tommy knew him well. Also, Peter had donated a magnificent trophy to the club which is still in use for one of the top awards each year at the club’s annual exhibition.

Spotlight on Graham Kelly,

IPF Photographer of the Year 2019

Graham with award and cake 560
Q: When did you take up photography?
A: My journey is probably very similar to that of many others in the IPF. Like most families in the 80’s, we always had a camera of some description lying around the house. I remember being fascinated looking through the viewfinder at an early age. I properly expressed an interest in photography at 16 and was greatly supported and encouraged by my mother who helped me buy my first SLR. I could manage the basics but lost interest by the time I got to college.
My wife was expecting our 1st child 6 years ago – It was time to buy a camera to capture some family memories. At that time, I was involved in sea swimming but a bad shoulder injury ended it abruptly. I found myself walking the coastline, it was a natural progression to start taking the camera. Nowadays I’m hugely encouraged and supported by my wife.

Q: Which club are you a member of?
A: Dundalk Photographic Society

Q: Do you have any IPF/FIAP/RPS etc. distinctions?
A: LIPF

Q: First camera? First DSLR?
A: A second hand Nikon F90

Q: What was the background to your most successful image?
A: My most successful image has to be viewed as the recent winner of IPF POTY – Wave Watcher. It was taken on the pier at Casterock Beach, Northern Ireland on a dull summer afternoon. A north wind was wiping up some nice waves at the end of the pier. I simply stood back and shot with a telephoto lens. It sat unprocessed on my computer until I needed an image for club competition this year.

Q: Your own favourite image?
A: My personal favourite photo will never make the grade in any competition. It documents the birth of my 2nd daughter. It captures a really special moment and I am saddened a little that I haven’t got a similar image to give my 1st daughter. My family photos are most likely what I will look back most fondly at in years to come.

Q: What genre of photography best describes your photography or are you a general interest photographer?
A: If I had the time, I would shoot anything and everything. I have an appreciation for all photography genres. They each have different but equally demanding skill sets and nuances. Personally, it is seascape photography that I gravitate towards most probably a result of my relationship with swimming.

Q: Canon or Nikon or Fuji or Sony?
A: Nikon

Q: Would you recommend joining a camera club? Why? What have you got out of it?
A: I would most definitely recommend a camera club to anybody with an interest in photography. They are great social environments to meet like-minded people who become friends and share ideas and knowledge. Most clubs also have a great guest speaker line ups where you get to see and be inspired by great work. Group shoots and events are also another fabulous aspect of the club scene.
While not to everybody’s taste, I enjoy the competitive element in club photography. I push myself hard trying to win “Image Of The Month” which is no mean feat in Dundalk Photographic Society. There are another 40 talented photographers also trying very hard to win it each month and you could literally hear a pin drop as images are being judged. It can be an electric atmosphere. The level of competition inspires you and motivates you into trying harder to improve.
Over time, I’ve learnt not to get too tied up in the success or failure of images. Competition has been very helpful in advancing the technical side of my work. By listening to the commentary of experienced judges with an open mind, I’ve been able to identify areas for improvement – there’s still plenty. It can be eye-opening to get a critique from someone who has no personal attachment to your images. Critique is a very negative word – I “try” to view the comments as well-meant directional feedback rather than criticism.

Q: What does photography mean to you?
A: This is a hard one to express verbally. It is not always about the final printed image. For me, photography is an activity that gets me outdoors exploring new places be they local or further afield. My free time is limited so I venture out when I can and simply work with whatever elements I face at the time. Now and again I get a great image, most of the time I don’t, yet I always arrive home happy, relaxed and distressed.

Q: What is your photographic dream?
A: I don’t really have one, I only hope my work gradually and steadily improves and that I’m fit and healthy enough to enjoy photography for a long time to come.

IPF Awards

Did you know that the IPF has an honorary award system available?

IMPORTANT.

"The following amendment to the Peter Slattery Memorial Award was agreed by the IPF Council. In order to assist clubs who have several qualifying members they wish to nominate for this award and qualify according to the notes and guidelines on the IPF website, permission has been granted to nominate three members in the year of their first application only and this amendment only applies up until the AGM in 2022."

IPF Awards should not be confused with IPF Distinctions. Awards are made to individuals who have served above and beyond at club or higher level over a significant period. To preserve the integrity and high standing of these honorary awards, the number granted each year will be strictly limited. The final decision on granting each Award will be made by the IPF Awards Committee, which shall be comprised of six members of the IPF Council including a secretary elected by the Awards Committee and chaired by the IPF President.
