IPF Newsletter - March 2020

Welcome to the March newsletter of the Irish Photographic Federation, which we hope helps to keep you updated on our latest news and provide you with all the information on what’s coming up over the weeks & months ahead.
IPF
The Federation host four major events throughout the year, the Photographer & Nature Photographer of the Year, the National Club Finals, The Audio Visual Championships, and the National Shield. All great events catering for individual club member photographers and clubs themselves. All hold their own significance and in my opinion, are getting better each year and always with a great entry from across the country.

In recognition of probably the biggest event of the four we host and what was another enormous successful weekend of great photography, I just want to record my thanks to Coordinator of the POTY & NPOTY Julie Corcoran for the tremendous job she did over the weekend of February 22nd & 23rd in Carlow. The amount of work that was involved in getting things to the final stage was exceptional and her sheer determination to make this all work has surely to be admired. Assisted in no small way by the members of Carlow Photographic Society who not for the first time pulled out all the stops to ensure everything went well.

Two very long days, but successful ones and this was clearly evident in the room and the atmosphere was very good amongst everyone. The judges on both days commented on the standard of photography, the attention to detail from the organisers and the generous hospitality shown to them over the course of their visit and participation in this event. I would like to thank our Judges Committee for selecting the team of judges and my extended thanks also must be recorded to our Treasurer Rory O’ Connor, and IPF Council Members Liam Beattie and Andy Magan who were on hand looking after other areas associated in the preparation and running of this event.

My congratulations to Fergal Quinn of Navan Camera Club who won the Nature Photographer of the Year and to Michael Strapec of Blarney Camera Club who won the Photographer of the Year.

A special word of thanks to all the sponsors involved and to Michael O’ Sullivan for his print presentation on the Sunday afternoon.

The following weekend February 29th we had the first Distinction Sitting of 2020 and again a great selection of panels were assessed over the course of the day. Congratulations to all who were successful, to those who weren’t please do come back again and give it another go. Thanks to the members of Portlaoise, Mountmellick and Kilkenny Camera Clubs for their assistance on the day and to Distinction Secretary Bob Morrison, and Chair & Vice-Chair of the Distinctions Des Clinton & Paul Stanley for their professionalism and attention to detail in hosting these sittings.

Onwards and upwards we go and so later in this newsletter, you will be notified of all the upcoming events that we will be holding in the next few months, the Distinctions in Mullingar in May along with The National Club Championships and the AGM of the Irish Photographic Federation. It's probably one of the busiest periods in the IPF calendar but none the less another couple of events to look forward too.

Thanks for all your support,

Until next time,

Kind Regards,

Dominic Reddin FIPF
President Irish Photographic Federation

Carlow Photographic Society Honour Founder Member

IMG_2854 (1)
Pictured L-R: Joe Ratttigan, newly elected Chairperson, with founding member Charley Callinan being presented his special award and a beautiful handmade card by Gilbert Smyth on his last official job as Chairperson.
At our AGM, we had a very special presentation to make to one member of the Carlow Photographic Society.

It gave members of the CPS great pleasure to see our founding member, Charley Callinan, presented with the Irish Photographic Federation Peter Slattery Memorial Award.

The Carlow Photographic Society was founded by both Charley Callinan and Stephan Nolan in 2003. Having both moved to Carlow, both former members of Tallaght Photographic Society, they decided to put an advertisement in the Nationalist to see if other like-minded people would be interested in meeting to form a club and the rest, as they say, is history!

Charley is an honorary and still very active member of the club. He has an in-depth knowledge of photography which he freely shares with members, be it on composition, exposure, which type of lens to use, the list goes on. Charley’s experience with photography goes right back to the fantastic days of a roll of film and developing and seeing prints come alive in the darkroom.

He likes to keeps his fellow members and the committee on their toes! The endless hours, days, weeks, years he has given to the Carlow Photographic Society is something we have all gained from photographically, individually and socially. Many friendships made, many a joke to be heard, many a laugh to be had.

The IPF Peter Slattery Memorial Award is a special award given to a member, who in the opinion of their club, has contributed significantly to the workings of the club over the years.

It gave Gilbert Smyth, being his last official job as Chairperson, great pleasure to present Charley with this special medal on behalf of all the members, for all his 17 years of hard work and dedication to the CPS.

Thank you Charley for founding such an amazing club and for being such a huge part of our photographic family which you created in 2003 and here’s to many more years ahead to look forward to

Did you know that the IPF has an honorary award system available?

IMPORTANT.

"The following amendment to the Peter Slattery Memorial Award was agreed by the IPF Council. In order to assist clubs who have several qualifying members they wish to nominate for this award and qualify according to the notes and guidelines on the IPF website, permission has been granted to nominate three members in the year of their first application only and this amendment only applies up until the AGM in 2022."
IPF Awards should not be confused with IPF Distinctions. Awards are made to individuals who have served above and beyond at club or higher level over a significant period. To preserve the integrity and high standing of these honorary awards, the number granted each year will be strictly limited. The final decision on granting each Award will be made by the IPF Awards Committee, which shall be comprised of six members of the IPF Council including a secretary elected by the Awards Committee and chaired by the IPF President.
