IPF Newsletter - December 2020

Colleagues and Friends welcome to our December Newsletter, it’s hard to credit just how fast the year has gone by all be it one of the strangest we have ever had to experience. Little did we know as the year began in January the way we would be living our lives and the changes we would have to make and the effect it would have on us all. However, I do believe we will get through this and come out the other side stronger and with probably a better outlook on life and an appreciation for what we have.
IPF
The various lockdowns, restrictions etc led us to change our mindsets and the way we do things, it no doubt has had an effect on us all as photographers and the great enjoyment we get from taking photographs, processing them, entering them into club competitions, National Competitions etc. It has also had a strange effect on us all as club members within all the clubs we are associated with, and needless to say it has had a huge impact on us here as members of the Irish Photographic Federation Council in planning our events, hosting the events, communicating with the affiliated clubs. The enjoyment we shared throughout the years meeting so many of you at IPF events has been for me one of the hardest things about living through this pandemic. The various competitions where we shared stories, information on camera gear, papers for printing, new websites, sales in Camera stores etc. All of which we have grown accustomed to and which made these events so interesting and good crack among all, let alone the standard of great photography from photographers the length and breadth of the country that was always on display. I know I share with you all when I say I am looking forward to the days when we will be able to do this all again and maybe even better.

As the Council of the Federation, we have had to adapt to a new way of doing our business and I just want to acknowledge the work of my fellow members on the Council for overseeing these changes and trying to deal with doing what we can to try and continue with most of the events we would traditionally host each year. Like all organisations, we eventually got used to Zoom meetings and conducting our business online, hosting events and planning for the future. With that, I would like to acknowledge the work carried out by the members of Council in determining what was the best and safest way to conduct our business with the health and well being of all the members of clubs affiliated to the IPF and that of the members themselves.

As the year went on we gradually started meeting through Zoom meetings and managed to carry out the following,
Held the National Shield - Online, which was overseen by National Coordinator Andy Magan and in no small way assisted by members of Kilkenny Photographic Society & Carlow Photographic Society, a terrific event which you can read all about further in the newsletter,
Completed a published List of IPF Approved Judges & Lectures, with the cooperation of the Regional Reps and a Sub Committee of the IPF overseen and chaired by John Butler who did a tremendous job putting it all together that our clubs can use for their benefit.

Held the Annual FIAP Distinction Presentation for those who achieved their FIAP Distinctions in association with Dublin Camera Club and the IPF FIAP Liaison Officer Paul Stanley who does a trojan job each year bringing this all together.
Held the first Online Distinctions Sitting on November 28th for Licentiateship Applicants to be followed up in early January 2021 with another Distinction Sitting for Associateship & Fellowship Applications. A tremendous amount of work was carried out by a great team of people including Bob Morrison the Distinctions National Secretary, Andy Magan, Liam Beattie, and the assessors under the stewardship of Des Clinton and Paul Stanley.

We are working behind the scenes on a new competition which will replace the Annual Photographer of the Year & Nature Photographer of the year which we hope to bring you more information on early in the New Year.

The IPF Annual General Meeting will take place in February 2021 - Online, details of such will be circulated to all Clubs in advance with login details etc.

And finally, after three years, this is the last Newsletter to be edited and overseen by
Liam Beattie. With great attention to detail and in a very professional manner Liam took to this role and contributed in no small way to ensuring that we managed to circulate all IPF related news including club achievements, club members achievements and information on competitions, awards etc. Thank you Liam, for all your work associated with the production of this and the many newsletters you worked on over the years.

May I take this opportunity to wish all club members and clubs a very peaceful, safe and Happy Christmas,

Take care of yourselves,

Until next time,

Regards,

Dominic Reddin
Irish Photographic Federation
National President.

    Licentiate Assessments November 2020

We held our very first online distinction assessments Saturday 28th November 2020. This session was confined to those who applied for the Licentiate for May last. The reason for dealing with fewer applications this time around was to ensure that assessing would be as close to “normal” as could be achieved and to ensure that the applicants’ panels would be assessed as fairly as possible. In the event, the session went well and the following applicants were successful.

    Denis Ryan
    Limerick
    Des Pearson
    St. Brigid’s
    Colman Doyle
    St. Brigid’s
    Evelyn Pender
    St. Brigid’s
    Karen Greene
    Cavan
    Esther Diskin
    St. Brigid’s
    Christopher Brown
    St. Brigid’s

Their Licentiates have been ratified by the National Council. Congratulations to them all. There were also, unfortunately, applications that did not succeed and we hope those applicants will take the assessor’s advice on board and come back to succeed in the future.

    Associate and Fellowship Assessments

The May Associate and Fellowship applications will be assessed on Saturday 9th January, once again, online. Best of luck to everyone who will be in the firing line!

    More Distinction Applications in 2021

At a date in January, which has yet to be set, we will invite new applications for all distinction levels. We will not initially set quotas as we normally do for “physical” distinction sittings. Instead, we will decide on dates for online sittings once we know how many applications have been received.

A “window” four weeks or so will be allowed for applications to be made, so no need to panic, all will be accommodated as long as they apply within that window. Applicants will be given the option to be assessed online or in a “physical” sitting. Naturally, there will not be a “physical” sitting for some time. Don’t ask us to predict when.

After all the applications are received, we will assign them to different sessions in line with what we have learnt so far, particularly as to the length of time that will be needed to assess online at the different levels.

    Digital Image and Print Quality

It will be very important for applicants to note that assessments will continue to be based on the standards set for print quality for “physical” sittings up to now.

Every application will, once we call for the panel to be sent to us, must consist of both a digital version of the panel and an unmounted print version. The unmounted prints will be viewed by a designated print assessor who will advise the online assessors as to print quality. It goes without saying that the unmounted prints must be printed to the quality required for the level being assessed and must be on the paper that would be used for a “normal” assessment.

Best wishes for a safe Christmas and New Year,

    The Distinctions Team

    FIAP News

    FIAP Distinctions Update
For a number of years the IPF – as allowed for under the FIAP Distinction Regulations – have had a number of local requirements for those applying for AFIAP.
It was decided at the IPF Council meeting on 17th October 2020 that these will be suspended with immediate effect.
The impact of this is that those applying for AFIAP in the upcoming application process will only have to adhere to the FIAP requirements. There are no changes for those applying for EFIAP and the EFIAP levels and also for MFIAP.
A reminder that the schedule for this year is that submissions will open on 1st November 2020 and will close on 28th February 2021.
You should initially register on the IPF website and pay the relevant fee there.
If you are applying for the first distinction – AFIAP – then you also have to register with FIAP and apply for a FIAP Life Card. There is a separate fee for this. You can make this application via the FIAP online platform at www.myfiap.net
There is a link at the bottom of the screen called “Create new Photographer profile”. Click on this – and then look at the video by clicking on the link in the Red Banner with the words “Video tutorial on how to order the FIAP card”.
All the information you need is on the IPF website under the FIAP pages.
All applicants should also let the FIAP Liaison Officer – Paul Stanley – know of your intention to apply. You can contact him via the Contact page on the IPF website.

    FIAP distinctions and Print Acceptances
FIAP has announced that anyone applying for distinctions in 2021 will not have to abide by the Print Acceptance requirements. This decision was taken in light of the current Covid-19 Pandemic which has affected the postal services in some countries and which has caused some salons which would normally have print sections to not have them in 2020 and 2021.

    MFIAP Distinction
Anyone who has held the EFIAP distinction for at least 3 years can apply for an MFIAP distinction. The process is different from that for the other FIAP distinctions.
The closing date for MFIAP applications is 31 December 2020.
I would advise anyone who is considering applying for an MFIAP to contact me immediately for all the relevant information. I can be contacted via the IPF Website Contact page – at this link https://irishphoto.ie/contact/

    FIAP celebrates its 70th Anniversary
This year FIAP is celebrating its 70th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, FIAP has organised an international photography competition which is open to all photographers from around the world.
The theme is “The World in 2020”.
The competition is under FIAP patronage – so acceptances will count towards FIAP distinctions. There is no entry fee and the Best Author will be invited to the next FIAP Photo Meeting (Scheduled for November 2021) – all expenses paid (i.e. Flights and hotel costs).
There is one section and both Colour and Black & White images can be entered.
There is a restriction in that the images have to in the “Traditional Photo” subject.
A “traditional photo” maintains the original single capture image content with minimal adjustments which should not alter the reality of the scene and should appear natural. Rearranging, replacing, adding to or removing any part of the original image except by cropping is strictly forbidden. HDR (High Dynamic Range) and focus-stacking techniques, whether done in-camera or post-capture, are strictly forbidden.

The opening date for submission of images is 1st September 2020 – and the closing date is 1st January 2021.
The website for submission is www.fiap-earthin2020.net

    FIAP Photo Academy
FIAP has announced an online Photo Academy which will be an online resource for photographers interested in furthering their photographic skills. There will be two arms to this – a training academy and online presentation by eminent photographers.
A number of very successful presentations have taken place since September and a lot of Irish based photographers have joined in for these presentations. Many thanks to all who did and we hope that you enjoyed the presentations.
There will be more in 2021 – keep an eye out for the notices about them which will be on Social Media and this Newsletter.

    FIAP Colour Biennial
FIAP has confirmed that the Colour Biennial will take place in 2021. The IPF selection committee is now busy preparing our entry for it. We will keep you updated on progress.

Wildlife Photography and Habitat – with Marco Gaiotti

The FIAP Photo Academy Online Events is very pleased to announce that we will have a presentation from the eminent Italian Photographer Marco Gaiotti.
Born and raised in Genoa, Italy. In 2007 the award-winning photographer Marco Gaiotti discovered, almost by chance, the wild environments of Southern Africa, and with them the passion for nature photography, which drives him every year to explore the most uncontaminated habitats of our planet.
In 2009 he spent a month in Alaska to observe the fauna and the spectacular local landscapes, in complete autonomy, camping in the wilderness. From this experience, the desire to give a more professional tone to the passion for photography grew.
In the fall of 2013, he participated in an expedition to the Svalbard Islands, a few days before the Arctic night. The results of this photographic adventure are translated into publications in the most important international newspapers, including a double-page print in the paper edition of 'The Guardian'.
He has been honoured with numerous awards in the main international nature photography competitions, including The SONY WPA (Open Shortlist), Nature's Best, Windland Smith Rice International Awards, Memorial Maria Luisa. Other awards were obtained at Asferico, GDT European Photographer of the Year, Montphoto, Oasis, Glanzlichter, SIPA, Nature Photographer of the year, Global Arctic Awards.
Marco saysTo me, nature photography represents a strong interaction between wildlife and the surrounding environment. In my pictures, I like to include the habitat as much as possible, which becomes a fundamental element of the composition. For this reason, when a species can be approached safely for both the photographer and the animal, I like using wide-angle lenses instead of long telephotos, in order to depict the connection between wildlife and its natural environment.”
The Zoom meeting with Marco Gaiotti will take place on 17th December 2020, 19:00 PM – London Time. Please check your local time to determine the time difference.
Places for this presentation are limited – you must register your wish to attend by sending an email to fiapphotoacademy@gmail.com.
Please include your country of residence in the text of the email.
Please let us know as soon as possible if you would like to attend.

    Dublin Camera Club

    “Introduction to Photography” Course on-line

Like so many IPF affiliates, the Dublin Camera Club has been greatly affected by the restrictions required to combat the Covid 19 pandemic; the club’s premises where it holds its meetings and exhibitions has been closed since March. However, thanks to the ZOOM platform, DCC moved quickly to hold its meetings on-line and has been able to continue and expand its programme of presentations, competitions and workshops through both lockdowns. The club has found that ZOOM greatly expands the range of speakers and activities internationally, with presentations from among others the famous Smethwick club and the president of FIAP.

And most importantly, DCC has successfully moved its highly regarded “Introduction to Photography” Course on-line which allowed it to attract participants from outside its natural Dublin catchment area. The reaction was so positive that another course is planned to commence at the end of January next.

The course is a general introduction to photography and is suitable for both absolute beginners and people with a little basic photographic knowledge including those using their camera phones. It comprises nine weekly on-line modules delivered live by experienced members of the club, covering how your camera works and how to use it to produce great images
    • The main principles of exposure to ensure your images are crisp and sharp
    • The basics of editing your images (post-processing)
    • The elements of good composition
    • Tips on specific photographic genres – monochrome, people, travel and landscape
Each module will provide an interactive question and answer facility, comprehensive notes emailed the following day, and suggested exercises based on its content. In addition, participants have:
    • temporary membership of the club allowing attendance at all its presentations and workshops
    • an experienced mentor assigned who can answer your queries, comment on images and (COVID regulations permitting) host two Saturday walkabouts to practice what is preached
    • access to a dedicated Facebook support group for the course
At the end of the nine modules, a Course Exhibition of images taken by participants will be hosted on the clubs’ website. And they will also be able to become a full-time member of the club for an annual fee of €60 in the first year (a 50% discount on the normal fee).

The course costs just €120 and would be an ideal Christmas gift for anyone thinking about taking up photography.

COVID 19 also meant that the club was not in a position to hold its Annual Exhibition in 2020, the highlight of every club’s year. So DCC instead is hosting a showcase Christmas Exhibition, self-selected by club members across all grades to show the images they feel best reflects their photographic practice. The exhibition will run from 9th December until mid-January 2021.

Further information on the Introduction to Photography course including how to register is available on the Dublin Camera Club website. And of course, this is where you will find the Christmas Exhibition when it launches. See www.dublincameraclub.ie

    The John Doheny Memorial Shield

The SACC ran a special competition, for all members of its affiliated Clubs, as a Digital competition only. The idea is to capture the striking beauty and drama of the Irish Landscape, which of course includes Urban Landscapes, especially during this time of pandemic uncertainty. Discovering and rediscovering local and nearby places of beauty and or interest as well as rural landscapes transformed by the Lockdown has led to a wealth of amazing images.
The competition was open to all members of SACC affiliated Clubs in good standing. The competition consisted of two sections (Colour and Monochrome), under the theme of “Irish Lockdown Landscapes” and was for FIAP defined “Traditional Photographs”. Entries were confined to landscape images captured anywhere on the island of Ireland between 15th March 2020 and 30th September 2020. There were two grades within each section, Grade 1(Advanced) and Grade 2 (non-Advanced).
The SACC inaugurated the “John Doheny Shield” to be awarded annually to the winner of this particular Competition’.
    Picture1
The Competition commemorated John Doheny late of Mallow Camera Club. John had been taking photographs since he was a youngster. Landscapes, seascapes, travel, architecture and people were his main photographic subjects. He was a founder member of Mallow Camera Club and a previous Secretary, Chair and Webmaster of the Southern Association of Camera Clubs (SACC).
As a founding member of the regional body as well, John served the SACC in various roles and was instrumental in keeping the organisation alive and growing over the years. John also served as a member of the Council of the Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) publishing its first website and first newsletter. John was highly regarded as a leading light in all regional and national club photography and without him, it would not be at the same high level that it is today. John made a huge contribution to club photography and especially the SACC and the current committee felt this was an appropriate way to mark his unique contribution. As well as being a most capable administrator and no mean photographer John was an “all-round nice guy” who was universally popular with all his colleagues on the Irish Photography Scene.
Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a Anam uasail”.
    Picture2
We were delighted to get that the celebrated photographer David Noton to Judge the inaugural John Doheny Competition. With 32 years’ experience as a wandering professional David Noton is established and recognised as a leading landscape and travel photographer. His passion for photography, travel and the world’s beautiful places are the defining influences that have shaped David’s life, work and creative approach to photography.
His images sell all over the world – both as fine art photography and commercially in advertising and publishing. He has won international awards for British Gas/BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards in 1985, 1989 & 1990. David has published 3 books.
The competition attracted over 250 entries and was well supported by Clubs across the Region and rounded off with an excellent presentation which can be viewed on the SACC Website (SACC.IE).
    Picture3
The presentation includes a contribution from the Judge David Noton and is well worth viewing.

David indicated in his summary that what he went for was images which “Jumped out at you” and showed the “Unique Vision” of the photographer which, while the technicalities can be thought is innate to great photographers.
He described the winning image (Seamus Mulcahy, Blarney PC) shot of Dromluska Cottage as a “fantastic evocative image full of subdued mood and drama”.
”. He went on to describe Neilly Curtin’s (Mallow CC) Ballinskelligs as “a wonderfully minimalist image”, “beautifully observed” and “brave” in execution. He went on to describe mark Gorman’s image of Rockey Bay as a fantastic image which “takes the eye” through the swirling water to the swimmers on up to the fantastic sky.
    Picture4
    Picture5
Many clubs in the region were represented in the “Winners enclosure” including Mallow (with the largest entry as one would expect), Blarney, Cork, Ballincollig, and Wexford. It proved to be a very popular competition and the standard was extremely high. The full presentation is available via a U-Tube link on the SACC website at WWW.SACC.IE

IPF Audio Visual Group - Update

IPF Audio Visual Group - Update by Lilian Webb, IPF AV Group Committee Secretary/Treasurer.
A three-way exchange was arranged between East Midlands Audio Visual Group, Wilmslow Guild Audio Visual Group and the Irish Photographic Federation Audio Visual Group. This was originally arranged to be held in Enniscorthy in April. Like everything else due to the Pandemic - all events were on-line. The 8 sequences representing the IPF AV Group were:-

The Beauty and the Beast - Pat Collins.
The Corruption of Innocence - Liam Haines.
Avondale’s Proud Eagle - Rita Nolan.
    … I must think about it.. - Maria O’Brien
    Safe - Judith Kimber
The Three A’s - Lilian Webb
    Interwoven - Yvonne Acheson
A Moment in Time - Alan Lyons & Brendan O’Sullivan.

Over a period the 16 from the other two groups were available to be critiqued by about a dozen members and following a meeting on Wednesday, 9th December, the comments are being amalgamated and will be sent to the groups. The IPF authors received comments on their sequences. It is a good way for those who are not able to attend AV events across the Irish Sea to view sequences, though we missed the camaraderie of the last time we had such an event in Shannon.

Approximately 250 people logged in on the day, a pre-recorded video including our sponsor Sheldon Long, Dominic Reddin President of the IPF and the judges giving feedback on the panels to a very attentive and appreciative audience. We then went live for the result.

Richard Speirs remarked that it was reassuring that the standard of photography in the IPF was very high. He thanked the amazing organisers of the competition bringing together a judge from England, a judge from Australia, and a judge from Indonesian and that it worked faultlessly.

Summing up their enjoyment and each remarked on the extraordinarily high standard of photography on display making it a challenge to pick the best of the best.
Special thanks go to Mark O’Gorman from Fotagraphics.com for uploading the video onto YouTube.
