IPF Newsletter - January - 2018

A cháirde

As we come to another year-end I do hope you enjoyed your photography in 2017 and I take this opportunity to wish you all the very best throughout 2018.
IPF
In the past year, the Irish Photographic Federation continued to promote amateur photography in Ireland and support the Clubs and their photographers with the various National & International Events it held and were associated with. The Federation will continue to do so throughout 2018 and look forward to working with you all.

Now as the New Year begins we will be planning and working together to review how we do things as an organisation, make some changes and put in place a programme of events that hopefully will encourage as many clubs and photographers to participate in, get the enjoyment and feel the excitement that has been associated with them in the past. There will be some challenges ahead as we embark on another year but I am confident that the voluntary elected members of the IPF Council along with the support of the clubs that they represent and individual photographers working collectively will overcome the challenges.

As in previous years, there will be various events taking place and details of some of the upcoming events are included further on in this newsletter. We will continue to provide as much information as possible through this newsletter, our website, and social media.

Speaking of Newsletters this is the first of 2018 which is now administered by the IPF’s Public Relations Officer Liam Beattie, I want to thank Liam for taking on this role and hope you will all support its publication by assisting with whatever news & information you have and would like to see included. The newsletter is a valuable tool and great way of communicating and spreading information on the many various events that will be taking place through the Federation and with clubs across the country. So please use it.

And finally, we introduced the IPF Newsletter in December of 2014, and since the first edition, we have seen it grown from strength to strength. However, its success would not have been possible if not for the work that out-going editor Niamh Whitty has done with it. From the start, she has continued to keep it going and continued to ensure it got published every month with new information and reports and success stories with both clubs and photographers. I want on behalf of the IPF and its clubs thank her for all the work she put into it.

Thank You, Niamh

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Niamh for all her hard work as the previous editor of the IPF newsletter. It really is a credit to her.
me
Over three years and thirty-six publications later Niamh has established the newsletter as a very important part of the IPF and also in getting information out to all of you, I hope I can continue to do the same.
I want to wish Niamh every success in her new endeavors and as Niamh wrote in last months newsletter "please keep sharing your news with the wider IPF community through our newsletter."

Catchlight Camera Club -

FIAP World Cup Winners 2017

Catchlight CC members were thrilled to follow in the footsteps of Dundalk PS who won the FIAP World Cup in 2010.
The Club was founded by Ross McKelvey FIPF just 6 years ago, and the current Chairman is Bob Given DPAGB. We are based in South Belfast and pride ourselves in being a cross-community Club that is affiliated to both NIPA in the North (one of the many UK Federations that form the PAGB) and the IPF in the South.

FIAP World Cup 2017
As current FIAP, NIPA and IPF Champion Club, unfortunately, the only way is 'down' after the success we have enjoyed in the 2017/18 season!

Our success has been made possible by the fantastic collective spirit we have within the Club - everyone is very open with their knowledge and their experience, and we help members improve their photography and their processing throughout the season. Catchlight membership is capped at 65 and membership is currently full. We meet on a Wednesday night in a local Community Centre, and we regularly bring top-notch speakers from the PAGB and the IPF, to help inspire our members. Members are encouraged to attempt Distinctions and to enter Salons and exhibitions. At the moment we have 37 members with at least LIPF or LRPS, 9 of whom have higher level Distinctions such as AIPF or DPAGB.The number of messages of congratulations we have received from fellow clubs in the IPF has been fantastic to see - thank you all! We look forward to participating in the IPF Club Championships at Mullingar in May 2018. We wish all IPF clubs and members the very best for 2018!

Annual Fees

For those who have not paid their annual distinction fee this year, please note that you are now in arrears and are no longer allowed to use IPF distinction letters after your name.
The annual fee is very reasonable at €25 for standard renewal and only €15 for seniors. These fees help fund everything we do as an organisation so we ask you all to make the effort to help us continue to grow.
If you haven't received an invoice from us this year, please get in touch and we will most happily correct this for you :-)

New Handbooks on Distinction Guidelines

The IPF Distinctions Committee have begun compiling guidelines on some of the specialist Associate and Fellowship panel subjects that come up for assessment. These are intended to assist applicants when they are in putting their panels together.

Given the popularity of Nature photography and of Travel photography, the first guidelines to be published are on those subjects. Much of what is in them will already be well known to applicants, especially the Nature guidelines. Nevertheless, the guidelines should help applicants to compile panels that fully address the requirements for a successful assessment.

These guidelines are available on both the Associateship and Fellowship sections of the website.

Audio Visual - A Double Clash

Happy New Year to all Audio Visual sequence makers!
Clash number 1 - The Northern Ireland Photographic Association Audio Visual Festival, 2018 is held on the same weekend as the IPF POY and IPF Nature POY. This will be held at the Courtyard Theatre, Ballyearl, Doagh Road, Newtownabbey on Friday, February, 16th at 7.30 p.m. when the judge, Keith Leedham will be showing his work. On Saturday, 17th, from 10 a.m., sequences will be judged by Keith and after a meal, there will be a gala presentation of sequences and prizes.
Clash number 2 - The weekend concludes with an inter-federation "battle" when the winner of the above will be judged against the winner of the IPF AV National Championships last October. Yvonne Acheson, Shannon Camera Club' was the winner and her sequence “A Canvas Of Blue”, will represent the IPF. The best of luck Yvonne! The IPF present a silver medal for the audience vote each year.
The NIPA AV Festival has an All Ireland section, which I encourage all those who entered AV2017 to enter and see their sequences shown to a wider audience and judged by a different judge.
A mail shot is sent to all those interested in AV in January notifying all of the AV-related matters, the necessity to have a license to show their sequences and of course, if distinction holders, to pay their annual fees! If anyone wants to know more about AV - go to the contacts page of the IPF website and tick "IPF Audio Visual Group".

Spotlight on Richie Hatch

Richie is a professional architectural photographer who has a dream day job that most of us would kill for, selling photographic equipment and printing images all day!

Architectural Image 560
Through this, he is well known to most photographers in the North East region and beyond, and no doubt he has helped many of us out with his friendly expert advice over the years.
Q: When did you take up photography?
A: I always had an interest in photography as my Dad always had a camera as I was growing up. I played around with film for a short period but only started to take it seriously back around 2003 with the birth of my daughter.

Q: Which club are you a member of?
A: Mid Louth Camera Club for the last 14 years.

Q: Do you have any IPF/FIAP/RPS etc. distinctions?
A: LIPF. I have it years. Maybe eventually I will go for other distinctions but for the moment I can't even imagine where I would get the time to concentrate long enough to even think about going for another one! For the moment I’m more than happy with where I am with my photography - maybe it shouldn’t always be about what letters we have after our names! Haha

Q: First camera? First DSLR?
A: My Dad’s old Olympus OM10 was my first proper camera. Went Digital with the Canon EOS 300D back in 2003. Changed to the 20D very soon afterward!
Q: What was the background to your most successful image?
A: Interesting question. It depends on what you mean by my most successful image. In competition terms then it was probably an image titled ‘A Bleak Dream’ - a dark image inspired by a dream at a time when three people I knew committed suicide within a very short period. An image that gained quite a shocking reaction from judges in any competition I entered it into in print format. If speaking in terms of personal success then some of the images I have taken of my kids and family have made me very happy!
A Bleak Dream 560
Q: Your own favourite image?
A: Hmmmmmm…. VERY difficult to answer that! I shoot a lot of different types of photography and have many favourites but probably a recent personal favourite would be ‘Waiting for Summer’, a simple shot of my son looking out my living room window. A successful shot to me at the moment is one that makes me happy and not a judge, if it makes both of us happy then that’s a bonus. Photography should be about creating images to please yourself and not others. I don’t care much for Facebook likes, Instagram followers, letters after my name or what other people think of my personal work. My professional work is a different story - then I care about what my clients require and add a personal touch to create some favourites for them!
Waiting For Summer 560
Q: What genre of photography best describes your photography or are you a general interest photographer?
A: My personal genre of work changes from time to time. I love to shoot landscapes yet rarely get out anymore. Probably my favourite genre of photography to look at would be Street Photography. At the moment I really enjoy photographing my kids and trying to create something different than a ‘standard’ portrait. I’d be a massive fan of natural light portraits and love the work of Russian photographer Elena Shumilova, Polish photographer Magdalena Berny amongst others. Their use of available light in portraiture is magic! Professionally I am an architectural photographer. I have worked in an award-winning design based architectural practice for around 18 years and have an understanding of the processes used by architects and designers. This experience and understanding ensures that each project is executed according to the goals and brief of the client. I’ve shot everything from small domestic extensions to large office development to infrastructural projects from Cork to Donegal and just about everywhere in between. I like nothing better than arriving at a building with a brief in hand and getting to work on putting my own mark on the photos I create!

Q: Canon or Nikon or Fuji or Sony ?
A: Canon… and have been for the last 14 years. I love the system, reliability and support that Canon offer in Ireland. When I originally bought into Canon it was partially because of the availability of specialist Tilt-Shift lens and massive lens range. I currently use a Canon EOS 5DSr which is an absolute beast to use but great when you want to print big. I also use a couple of Sigma Art lens for my natural light portraits.

Q: Would you recommend joining a camera club? Why? What have you got out of it?
A: Yes… absolutely! I have learned more from being around like-minded individuals than I could ever have learned in a college or school. For a tiny club membership fee I've seen most of Ireland's best amateur and professional photographers. I’ve also made some amazing friends. Mid-Louth Camera Club is really a social club first and camera club next which makes for a really great atmosphere. If there was one thing I could change about camera clubs it's politics!!! Clubs should be fun places for like-minded individuals to share ideas and knowledge not to bicker about who has the most awards! I also think some clubs are way too competition-driven which again can inspire politics!!!! Thankfully Mid-Louth Camera Club has the perfect balance of education-based, informative talks and competition nights. Maybe we just need to organise more photographic outings but we are working on that.

Q: What does photography mean to you?
A: How the hell do I answer that without going all philosophical? I guess on a personal note it's my release, my chance to flex my artistic side with the bonuses of forgetting about the stresses of normal life! Professionally I love when I get that email from the client to say that they love the images! It’s a great feeling. It's also nice that it makes me some money! Haha

Q: What is your photographic dream?
A: I guess I’m living it. At the moment my life revolves around photography. Selling camera equipment and giving advice in Maher's Photographic, shooting architectural photography professionally and being a member of Mid-Louth Camera Club. What more could I want?

Q: Do you have a website/flickr/facebook photo page?
A: Yes…. For the moment I have a website (that I rarely get time to update) Richard Hatch Photography. I also have a couple of Instagram accounts, one for me and one for my dog (my other passion in life). If I was bothered about followers I’d be rightly p'd off that my dog has over double the amount that I have. Haha. I also use 500px to show the best of my personal work! All just use ‘richiehatch’ as the account name (or brucetheirishboxer for the dog) We reserve the right to edit/shorten responses if required

Focus on Clonmel Camera Club.

Clonmel Photo 560jpg (3)

Q: When was Clonmel Camera Club founded?
A: It was started in 2004.

Q: How many members do you have?
A: We have around 35 members.

Q: When and where do you meet?
A: We meet on Monday evenings every two weeks in “The Coachman” in Clonmel. We welcome photographers of all abilities.

Q: Any notable events?
A: This year we twinned with an Italian photo group from Costa Masnaga (The birthplace of Charles Bianconi) and set up a joint Facebook group with their members for sharing photos and ideas. We are hoping to arrange a trip there in 2018.

Q: When was the club started and by whom?
A: By two local enthusiasts, Paul Morrissey and Mick Bolger.

Q: Any member have any significant achievements or milestones recently?
A: Our annual Photographic Exhibition in Clonmel Library in August this year was our best entry yet, with over 60 framed photos which was very well received by the public This year we have started working with the South Tipperary Arts Centre, and two local theatre groups taking shots at rehearsals for publicising plays on social media and printed posters. This works both ways with the groups and our members getting valuable practice and is something we hope to continue. We are the current holders of the Suir Valley Challenge shield which is an inter-club competition with Carrick-on-Suir, Thurles and Waterford camera clubs. Our annual weekend away in May this year was enjoyed by 13 members. Based in Glengarriff, West Cork, we got some great shots around the coast, Healy Pass and Garinish island.

Q: To what do you attribute your success?
A: We have a variety of activities at our club nights including outdoor shoots, guest speakers, workshops, internal competitions, as well as trips out to places like The Saltee islands and the Copper Coast. All information is on our website www.clonmelcameraclub.com and our Facebook page

FIAP Distinctions Holders Exhibition - June 2018

The Irish Photographic Federation - in association with the Eddie Chandler Gallery, a FIAP Exhibition Center - will host an exhibition of images by successful FIAP Distinction Holders.
The exhibition will open on Saturday 9th, June 2018 in the Gallery.
LOGO FIAP
The presentation of pins and certificates will take place as part of the opening reception.

All successful FIAP Distinction applicants for 2018 will be asked to submit some of their images and these will form the exhibition. The numbers to be submitted will depend on the number of photographers applying in 2018 - but we guaranteed at least one per photographer.

The FIAP Liaison Officer will coordinate the exhibition and will be in touch with each photographer following the closing date for FIAP distinctions which is 28th, February 2018.
The exhibition will then be on show for the month of June.

This is a change to our normal practice of presenting pins and certificates as part of the IPF Club Championships. It is felt that by organising this exhibition we will be able to give better recognition to our successful international photographers.

FIAP Distinctions

Applications for AFIAP, EFIAP and the EFIAP levels distinctions are now being accepted - with a closing date of 28th February 2018.

Application and payment are to be made via the IPF website - however applicants for these distinctions should contact Paul Stanley to ensure that they have the most up to date information.

For all distinctions it is VITAL that you use the latest copy of the spreadsheets and documents - which are available from both the IPF and FIAP websites - or from Paul Stanley, FIAP Liaison Officer.

The Kilkenny Photographic Society

Personal Project Plan.

Over the last few months, we have had several long and deep conversations in the club about facilitating ALL members to realise their full photographic potential. Throughout the country, most if not all clubs have a sizeable section of their membership who feel either stuck in a rut or unintentionally excluded by the more advanced members of their clubs who go on to various distinctions, medals, and gongs of various types.

The KPS Personal Project Plan grew out of this ongoing dialogue to the point that the club dedicated a recent meeting entirely to this proposal. Thirty-five members attended and gave the plan a broad welcome.

Photography is indeed a very broad church. So, members are encouraged to pursue their photographic expression through whatever medium they wish - digital, smartphone, film, A-V or even a scanner. There are no deadlines, no rules or regulations ( within the limits of human reason of course). To begin with, in January our meetings encompass Cave Photography, Biodiversity Photography Projects and an introduction to A-V.

Two longstanding members of the club have been appointed as Facilitator/Mentors. Their role is to listen, challenge and encourage members through their various projects. Many clubs throughout the country have addressed this idea in various ways over the years, but the KPS has developed and launched this plan on a formal level.

Those of us club members tired of or, not interested in competitions, chasing distinctions, medals or the latest trends in Photography which are periodically done to death, now have a huge opportunity to formally develop their own photographic creativity in a safe, encouraging and positive space into the future.

We have earmarked our meeting of May 31st next as our Personal Project night where members can show their work whether complete or in progress at that time.

This is potentially a very broad and exciting development in the KPS. Anyone out there interested in adopting these ideas in their own clubs, by all means, contact us.

IPF Awards

Did you know that the IPF have an honorary award system available?

IPF Awards should not be confused with IPF Distinctions. Awards are made to individuals who have served above and beyond at club or higher level over a significant period. To preserve the integrity and high standing of these honorary awards, the number granted each year will be strictly limited. The final decision on granting each Award will be made by the IPF Awards Committee, which shall be comprised of six members of the IPF Council including a secretary elected by the Awards Committee and chaired by the IPF President.
