Irish Photographic Federation Newsletter

March 2021

Mag Portrait_IMG_2367
I want to welcome you all to our March newsletter. I am very honoured to have been elected as President of the Irish Photographic Federation for a three-year period. I thank my fellow Council members for their support. I want to pay tribute to our outgoing President, Dominic Reddin, for the tremendous job he did during his term of office. Because of the Covid pandemic the past year has been very different for the IPF and everyone in Ireland. Under Dominic’s stewardship we have successfully held many of our events online.
It is my intention, during my term of office, to continue to build on the success of the IPF. Until the vaccination programme has been completed, and the pandemic brought under control, we will have to continue to operate online. At this stage we do not know when we will be able to hold physical meetings again. We will continue the Distinction assessments online for the foreseeable future. As you are no doubt aware, applicants are required to submit prints as well as digital images of their work. We will continue with the requirement for prints, as producing high quality prints is an essential part of the IPF Distinction process.

We will be publishing updated lists of IPF approved judges and lecturers shortly. The lists, excluding contact details, will be published on the IPF Website. The lists, including contact details, will be circulated to the email addresses provided to the IPF when clubs pay their annual fees. It is therefore important that clubs provide up to date email addresses when renewing their membership. These lists will be revised annually and are a valuable resource for clubs seeking speakers or judges for competitions.

We are examining the possibility of holding the National Championships online this year and will provide more information once it is available.

I will continue to work with my fellow Council members to improve the standard of photography in Ireland. The IPF has played a very significant role in improving photography in Ireland at the individual, club and national level. This manifests itself in the success of individuals, clubs and the IPF in international competition and exhibitions. Long may it continue.

Stay safe,

John Butler

President
Irish Photographic Federation

IPF AV Group - Sad News

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of one of the IPF AV Group Committee members, Marie McGuinness, after a long period of ill health. She was lovingly cared for over the past six months by the staff of St. Francis Hospice, Blanchardstown. She is mourned by her sister, Catherine, brothers, Brendan, Aidan & Paul, relations and friends and we off them our condolences.

Marie was a valued member up until 2017 of the IPF AV Group Committee. Marie was one of the first people that attendees would meet at the Irish Photographic Federation’s National Audio Visual Championships in Clondalkin - a friendly face to welcome all. She was a stalwart of the East Leinster AV Group since its conception in 2006. She was a past member of Celbridge Camera Club and An Oige Photographic Society. Of her dozen sequences that she produced and entered in the IPF AV National Championships - she was the winner of 1 gold, 3 silver and 1 Bronze IPF medals and won the Best Photography Trophy.

It has been a very sad time for the AV community with the deaths last year of John Doheny, John Wilkinson & Frank Malthouse - all previous IPF Council members - and the sudden death of Ross Mulholland, 4 days after the Northern Ireland Photographic Association’s AV Festival last month.

Marie will be greatly missed by all her friends in the AV community and Celbridge Camera Club. May she rest in peace.

Distinctions Update

Licentiate Assessments: Sunday 21st March
Congratulations to all who were successful on Saturday. Their names will be published shortly on the website. This was the first online session to be open to a general audience and we saw some wonderful images.

Associate and Fellowship Assessments: Saturday 27th March
If you have applied for your link for the Saturday, remember the assessing begins at 10.00am. The Associate and Fellowship panels will be very interesting and best of luck to all the applicants.

More Applications
The next assessment sittings are likely to be in May, and we already have a number of applications. The website is open for online assessment applications for all levels, and we will arrange sittings as soon as we receive enough applications.

If you are thinking of going for an online assessment, it is very important to remember that unmounted prints of your images will be essential to the assessing. The images should be printed to the standard required for the level you apply for, and printed on the quality of paper you would choose for a “physical” assessment. Full details of the prints and digital requirements will be sent to all applicants.

IPF Distinctions Secretary

FIAP News

FIAP Distinctions
We have now reached the end of the application period for this year’s FIAP distinctions. During March we will be double-checking all applications and preparing them to be sent to FIAP by the closing date of 30 March 2021. FIAP are guiding that it can take up to 3 months for them to complete their checks and to issue the certificates and pins. The FIAP Liaison Officer will be in contact when more is known.

Please note that the introduction of the previously advised changes to the FIAP Distinction requirements has been suspended. It turns out that these have to be presented to and agreed at a FIAP Congress. There was supposed to have been a Congress meeting last year but the Covid Pandemic prevented this from happening. The next Congress is scheduled to be held in 2022. Therefore, it will be at least 2023 before any changes can be implemented.

In light of the continuing effects of the Covid Pandemic FIAP are also waiving the Print requirements for Distinction applications and they are reducing the fees charged for FIAP Life Cards and FIAP Distinctions. This will be effective from 30th June 2021 and will last until 30th June 2023.

FIAP Competitions
FIAP will soon announce two more international photography competitions open to photographers from all over the world. The first will aim to promote UNESCO’s world cultural heritage. The second one will be reserved for Wildlife Photography. Both competitions will be under FIAP patronage and free of charge entry.

In addition to the acceptances and medals that will count for FIAP distinctions, the Best Author will be invited to the next FIAP Photo-meeting with all expenses paid (flight / transport and accommodation costs).

FIAP Colour Biennial
The Irish entry of 10 prints and 20 digital images has been selected and sent to France where the Biennial is being hosted.

I have just been informed that due to the continuing restrictions relating to the Covid Pandemic, the judging which had been schedule to take place at the end of March is being postponed. It will be rearranged for a time when everyone is able to travel.
I will keep you updated on news whenever I receive it.

FIAP Photo Academy
The FIAP Photo Academy online events continue on a regular basis. The next event will take place on Saturday 20th March 2021 at 2pm. It will be the Awards Ceremony for the 14th FIAP World Cup for Clubs.

Many of the IPF Affiliated clubs took part in this, with Catchlight Camera Club being placed 4th overall (gaining a FIAP Bronze Medal) and Malahide Camera Club being placed 6th Overall (gaining an Honourable Mention).

Competition Results

Judging of entries and announcement of awards for Mallow Camera Club’s Image of the Year 2020-2021 Competition took place on 1st February 2021 via Zoom.

This year’s competition also included the inaugural John Doheny Perpetual Trophy. This was introduced to honour the memory of John Doheny, a much-respected colleague and one of the Club’s founder members, who passed away last year. The John Doheny Perpetual Trophy is awarded to the best overall image, as adjudicated by the judges between the Overall Colour Image of the Year and the Overall Mono Image of the Year.

The competition attracted 33 entrants, with each entrant submitting one colour and one mono image. The scoring and commentary was conducted live over Zoom.

We were privileged to have three top-class judges for our competition:
  • Helen Hanafin FIPF EFIAP/s, member of Dublin Camera Club and an IPF-approved judge.
  • Mike Brown of Platform 3, award-winning fine art photographer and educator.
  • David Gibbins ARPS APAGB EFIAP/b BPE5 CPAGB AV, a member of Beeston Camera Club in Nottinghamshire and a N&EMPF & PAGB Alliance listed judge.
The competition attracted a high very standard, as usual, with some very close scoring and the judges had to deliberate and debate on a number of ties, including on the Overall IOTY. Helen, Mike and David put in an excellent effort, especially in providing feedback on every image with positive observations and constructive suggestions for improvement where appropriate, and we hugely appreciate their contribution.

The Overall Image of the Year, and the inaugural John Doheny Perpetual Trophy, was awarded to Justyna Trzesicka LIPF for her fabulous image, “Artemis.” This image was also awarded Overall Colour Image of the Year and first place in Grade 4 Colour. Justyna also picked-up third place in Grade 4 Mono.

He will be forever remembered as a kind, generous and helpful colleague.” Both Geraldine and Declan expressed their appreciation for the Club’s honouring of John’s memory through the John Doheny Perpetual Trophy.

A huge “Thank you,” also as usual, to our competitions team Lisa Egan and Neil O’Mullane, for setting up and running the competition.

The physical presentation of trophies and medals to the winners will take place whenever COVID restrictions are appropriately relaxed.

Congratulations to all the winners and a huge thank you to everyone who entered.
