IPF
Hi All,

Welcome to this special edition of our newsletter. We are circulating this, our second newsletter in January, to bring to your attention notice of the upcoming Annual General Meeting of the Irish Photographic Federation which takes place on Sunday February 21st through Zoom.

As the Covid–19 pandemic is still very much at large in the country and worldwide, we are unfortunately not able, as with most of our planned events, to hold the traditional meeting in public. However, through the powers of technology we are now going to host the event through a Zoom meeting and we do hope that we can reach out to as many of our affiliated clubs, as is possible, to participate. You will see below information on the event and details of how the IPF Zoom administrator will forward the invitation link to club secretaries two weeks before the actual event to allow representation from each club.

At this stage I want to thank you all for pulling through this pandemic with us and for the goodwill that has been coming through in the events that we have managed to bring you online to date. The IPF Council are very conscious of trying to keep things going as best we can and will continue to deliver as many as possible of our normal events and competitions in these ways. Our National Secretary Lillian Webb has written a great piece about the IPF and the current imbalance that exist in relation to the Council that oversees the work of the Federation and makes some very interesting comments. We would like to address this matter and welcome new people along to assist us with the work involved and to offer more opportunities and initiatives to support the affiliated clubs that we represent.

As my Presidency comes to an end, I look back and embrace the many good things we have managed to achieve within the Federation. I am aware that there are things we still need and will improve on, and we will continue to work to do this. I feel optimistic about the future of the Federation and where its going, and with your continued support we will continue to build on what we have achieved and work towards improving the work we carry out on your behalf.

Until next time,
Stay Safe,

Dominic Reddin

President
Irish Photographic Federation

A Call To Correct The Imbalance!

The Irish Photographic Federation was “born” on April 1st, 1978 and thus almost 43 years later - we only have two females on the IPF Council at present. The most females there have ever been at any one time for a very short time was four in the many years that I’ve been on Council over a number of decades! As can be seen from the notice for the AGM - there can be 25 members on Council and at present there are 18 males and 2 females. There is also a dearth of younger members.
    sized-4

I am the longest serving female member of Council! Away back in the past, I used to attend the AGMs in Dublin Camera Club and there were probably only 2 females present at any of these. To put it into context, when I joined the Photographic Society of Ireland with a female friend, probably before the IPF was born, sometimes we were the only two females attending, and in some camera clubs that I used to visit - there were no females in the clubs/societies at all!

Now, in my own camera club, and in many others and in the Irish Photographic Federation Audio Visual Group, of which I’m secretary/treasurer and co-ordinator of the IPF AV National Championships - there is probably a 50/50 membership.

In the almost 43 years of the IPF - there have been two female Vice-Presidents - Deirdre Gaffney from Malahide Camera Club and myself who served for four years under two Presidents. I am also the second female National Secretary following in the footsteps of Sarah Nix from Clondalkin Camera Club some years back. There has never been a female President! When I stood in for the President in Kilkenny at the POTY & NPOTY in Kilkenny in 2015, I noticed that the names of the Presidents had not been updated and so, with another member of Council, we spent some time researching and eventually all the names are on the links of the chain. It was my proudest moment to be, as far as I am aware, the first female to wear the chain of office and had the greatest pleasure of presenting my fellow camera club member, Michael Linehan from Celbridge Camera Club with the Nature Photographer of the Year award in February, 2015.

There are many aspects of the Irish Photographic Federation that could do with your input male and female - young and old. There are all the national competitions, distinctions sittings, newsletter, website, finances, F.I.A.P., looking after medals, certificates, ribbons, publicity, international competitions, archives, photographer etc.

Pre-Covid when we could meet - and we usually met in Portlaoise - as a central point - we were able to meet up for coffee before and lunch afterwards. Nowadays - it is via Zoom.

So - there you have it - I look forward to the imbalance being righted!

    Lilian Webb,
    National Secretary
    Irish Photographic Federation
