Welcome to the September edition of our Newsletter. I hope you all had a good summer and enjoyed the limited good weather we had this year. Hopefully many of you got back to photography as the restrictions and lockdowns gradually eased. Clubs have also been able to organise outdoor events in compliance with Government guidelines and no doubt many of you have participated in them.

The IPF Council has decided that Council meetings should continue via Zoom and will review the situation later in the year. This year’s National Shield will once again be held via Zoom. Last year’s Zoom competition was a great success, and I have no doubt that this year the event will be just as successful.
|
|
The next IPF Distinction Assessment, which is taking place on September 25th, will also be via Zoom. I would encourage club members, particularly those who are considering applying for distinctions, to log in to this session. You will learn a lot from viewing the panels and hearing the comments of our very experienced Assessors.
|
The National Audio Visual championships are also being held via Zoom on October 16th and 17th this year.
|
As the level of vaccination against Covid 19 continues to increase in Ireland, the restrictions are gradually easing and life is beginning to move towards a new normal. Clubs are advised to make sure that they continue to comply with all Government and HSE guidelines on Covid 19, in order to protect the health and safety of their members. If club officers have any doubts, they should seek advice from their insurance brokers.

The Associate and Fellowship assessments scheduled for 26th September are now re-scheduled for Saturday 25th September.
|
On Saturday 25th September, the schedule will be:

- Licentiate panel assessment will begin at 10.00 am
- Associate assessment will begin after the Licentiate assessments
- Break for Lunch 1.00pm to 1.45pm
- 1.45pm Associate assessments, followed by Fellowship assessment

National Shield Digital 2021
|
|
|
|
|
It’s the time of the year again that we start talking about the National Shield 2021. A date for your calendar, we will be holding the National Shield 2021 on Sunday 14th November. The IPF Council have decided to hold a Zoom presentation again this year due to the uncertainty about Covid-19.
|
Club / Society must register their intention on or before Friday 15th October 2021 to participate in the National Shield 2021 and receive their club’s registration number.
|
The closing date for entries is Friday 29th October 2021 with all corresponding files that are required for the competition to be uploaded by WeTransfer to Shield@irishphoto.ie
|
Entry fee: € TBA The reduced fees will reflect the costs arising from this being a digital rather than a print competition.
|
Dates could change due to circumstances outside our control – please check back occasionally.
|
The National Shield is an inter-club competition, open only to non-advanced photographers from affiliated Clubs / Societies in good standing with the Irish Photographic Federation.
|
|
You must register two weeks before the closing date by sending an email to, Shield@irishphoto.ie, of your intention to participate in the National Digital Shield, so you can receive your club’s registration number.
|
|
The National Shield shall be competed for in each of the following categories: Monochrome Digital
|
and Colour Digital. The National Shield is awarded to the club with the highest aggregate total score across the two categories. Please read section 3.9 of the rules.
|
|
Clubs may compete in any or both of these two categories.
|
To compete, a club must submit eight images in each of the categories in which they wish to compete. Up to two substitute images may be submitted which may be substituted in case of a dispute relating to an image on a panel. Of the eight images submitted in each category the following shall apply. Only one image per photographer per panel is allowed. Each participating club may enter up to two images per panel from advanced photographers provided that the only criteria that determines them to be advanced is that they hold an LIPF distinction from the IPF or similar distinction from another recognised photographic organization. Photographers with any of the following are not eligible.
|
Any person who has received an IPF Associateship or Fellowship distinction or similar from FIAP, the PSA, or any other similar distinctions from any other photographic organization.
|
Any person who has been awarded more than one IPF medal in IPF National Competitions.
|
Any person who had an image that was chosen to represent the IPF in international competitions.
|
Any person who has received acceptances with five or more image titles, or any award including a ribbon, at FIAP and/or PSA recognised salons.
|
Any person whose club considers him or her to be of advanced standard in any discipline of photography.
|
Any person who holds a diploma or degree in photography from any recognised educational institution in Ireland or elsewhere.
|
A Digital A4 contact sheet containing thumbnail images of entries is required.
|
All images entered in the competition must be the work of the persons stated to have created them and must have originated in-camera according to international competition rules. Where the IPF requests proof of authorship, such proof shall be provided without delay.
|
No person may represent more than one club in this competition.
|
Images used in any previous National Shield competition shall not be used in the current competition.
|
Infringement of any of the rules may cause the relevant image and panel to be disqualified.
|
A club shall not use the same images in more than one panel. Where an image is so used, all versions of the images shall be disqualified.
|
Clubs entering the competition are strongly advised to read and check the rules carefully of the IPF National Shield Digital 2021 competition.
|
As of 2017, clubs entering the competition will be required to provide a list of image titles (maximum of 35 characters per title) for each panel. These titles will be provided to the judges to assist them to interpret images. No additional marks will be awarded for titles. The provision of titles is intended to assist judges to interpret images and arises from requests from numerous judges in different competitions that they be afforded such a facility. It is good practice for photographers to title their images properly and we wish to encourage this. However, any title containing the photographer’s name or the name of the club, will not be allowed.

|
Each judge will award a maximum of ten points per image (= 30 points in total per image).
|
The aim of the National Shield is to encourage clubs to enter their best images. No marks will be awarded for panel cohesion. This is not a change from previous years, merely a reminder. Clubs are advised to enter their very best images.
|
As in all IPF competitions, scoring is carried out separately by the judges whose scores are then totalled at the end of judging. Judging will be done in private. This year however, judges will provide commentary over Zoom.
|
The results of the 2021 National Shield Competition will be announced within seven days of the judging all Clubs/Society will be informed.
|
Presentation of awards will not take place until the Government Covid-19 regulations allow the IPF to do so in reasonable safety.
|
|
Before the results are announced, the competing panels shall be displayed on the IPF Website after the completion of judging and shall remain there for 5 days during which time objections or complaints may be lodged as outlined hereunder.
|
Objections or complaints relating to an entry, an entrant, or a panel, must be made in writing by a club secretary, a club competition secretary, or a member of the IPF Council. Objections from any other source shall not be entertained under any circumstance, as outlined in item 3 above. The objection must state clearly, in writing, the reasons for the objection and must be accompanied by an investigation fee of €50. The matter complained of will then be investigated by the coordinator and competition referee. If the objection is upheld, then the investigation fee will be returned. If the objection is deemed invalid, the IPF will not refund the investigation fee. A penalty of not less than €50 and not more than €150 may be imposed on the club against whom the objection has been proved valid.

38th Irish Photographic Federation’s National Audio Visual Championships & 2nd Open Photo Harmony Audio Visual Competition

This is the next national competition organised by the IPF. This is organised on behalf of the IPF by the IPF AV Group Committee, which comprises myself, Brendan O’Sullivan, as chairperson, with Yvonne Acheson, Edwin Bailey, Margaret Finlay, Liam Haines, Alan Lyons & Maria O’Brien.
We are delighted that Alastair Taylor, ARPS, has agreed to be our judge. He is the Editor of AV News, Treasurer of the RPS AV Group Committee and a member of the Nominations Committee of the Royal Photographic Society, as well as a multi award winning author. The sequences will be forwarded to Alastair in advance.
The closing dates are approaching, and I have forwarded reminders to all those here and abroad.

Writing this on 2nd September, we have received entries for the Open Photo Harmony AV Competition from Ireland - north and south, England, Netherlands, South Africa, Slovakia & Australia.
The event will be held on Saturday & Sunday, 16th & 17th October, 2021 via Zoom. A link will be sent out in early October to all entrants and those interested in attending. This will be done after the closing date when timing of sequences and a running order is able to be produced.
Even if you have not entered, you will have an opportunity for the first time maybe in “attending” the IPF AV National Championships, though to say that we will miss the camaraderie is an under-statement!

The International Federation of Photographic Art invites you to take part in the 16th FIAP World Cup for Clubs. Given the international health situation due to the evolution of the Covid-19, this year the judging of 16th World Cup for Clubs 2021 will be on-line, in order to safeguard the health of our judges. The Award Ceremony will presumably take place in May 2022, in place and date to be defined, compatibly with the global International health situation.

CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATION
|
|
|
|
|
Each club, member of FIAP or not, can participate with 20 digital photos (Black and White and/or colour). Works accepted in previous World Cups cannot participate.
|
|
Coherency between photos is not required. Registration and image upload only via Web-site:

Operational Members cannot participate.

The entry is limited to 20 works per club with a maximum of two (2) works per author. Each author can only participate in one club.

International teams are forbidden. However, one foreign author is allowed.

Files should be in JPG, RGB, 300 dpi
|
|
Image size: 2400 pixels minimum and 3500 pixel maximum for the largest side in order to be printed for the exhibition. Maximum file size 6 MB.
|
|
No file naming is necessary; the files will be renamed automatically during upload.
|
|
|
|
|
|
There is no fee for ILFIAP Clubs, which already pay a member fee to FIAP. The entry fee is 50 € (not $) for non ILFIAP member clubs, to be paid:

2021 World Cup for Clubs for the best club. FIAP Gold medal for the club ranked second. FIAP Silver medal for the club ranked third. FIAP Bronze medal for the club ranked fourth.

Six honourable mentions for the clubs ranked 5th to 10th.
|
|
The authors of the club ranked first receive an honourable mention.
|
One FIAP gold medal, two FIAP silver medals, three FIAP bronze medals and four honourable mentions will award works of exceptional quality, independently of the club´s classification.
|
|
With the exception of the honourable mentions awarded to the authors of the club ranked first, each author can only be awarded one prize.
|
|
The Club having achieved the best results from 2017 to 2021 will receive the

Maurice Dorikens Trophy 2017-2021
|
|
|
|
|
|
A downloadable catalogue in PDF will be created. It will include the list of the prize-winning works, the classification of the clubs and the reproduction of all works of the first 10 clubs. The catalogue will be downloadable during the exhibition or immediately after.
|
|
Award Ceremony, with exhibition of prints and projection of the Winning Clubs entry and awards, will presumably take place in May 2022, in place and date to be defined, compatibly with the international health situation due to the evolution of the Covid-19.
