Irish Photographic Federation Newsletter

October 2021

Welcome to the October edition of our Newsletter. The Covid restrictions are easing as our vaccination levels are now the second highest in Europe. I hope you are taking the opportunity to take more photographs and enjoy the autumn colours. I’d still advise clubs to be cautious and ensure that their members attend gatherings in a safe environment. It is wise for us to continue to take precautions to protect ourselves and others.
The 38th National Audio-Visual Championships took place via Zoom on Saturday, 16th October, providing a feast of high quality AV productions. I’d like to thank Lilian Webb and her team – Yvonne Acheson, Edwin Bailey, Margaret Finlay, Liam Haines, Alan Lyons, Maria O’Brien and Brendan O’Sullivan for organising the event. Events such as this take a lot of organising. All of us in the IPF appreciate the work of our volunteer organisers.

The closing date for National Shield registration was Friday 15th October, with the last date for upload of entries being Friday 29th October. Thanks to Andy Magan and his team for organising the event and to our judges, Gerry Andrews, FIPF, ARPS, EFIAP, Des Connors, FIPF and Gwen Charnock, FRPS, MFIAP, APAGM. This promises to be another great exhibition of Irish Photography.

Stay safe,

John Butler, FIPF, ARPS

The next distinction sitting will be on Saturday 20th November. This will be on-line and will take in Licentiates, Associates and Fellowships.

The application forms will be available on the IPF website in the next two weeks.

Applicants for the Associate or Fellowship should make sure that the subject matter of their panel is indicated in the application form. This is very necessary as the assessors for the sitting are chosen so that the assessing panel will have expertise on subjects to be assessed. Applicants should choose from the following categories:

  • Portraiture / People
  • Environmental Portraits
  • Travel
  • Documentary
  • Seascape / Landscape
  • Creative Digital Art
  • Nature

SACC John Doheny Memorial Landscape Competition

The southern arm of the IPF the SACC closed entries to their regional competition the John Doheny Memorial Landscape Competition. With almost 150 images entered, internationally recognised landscape photographer David Noton will once again take on the task of judging the competition.

The competition is now being sponsored by the EPA in honour of their esteemed colleague John Doheny who was a founding member of the SACC and the IPF. John had a long and distinguished career in the EPA and his love of photography was clear to see. Many EPA publications contain photographs that John took over the years and his photographic work is on display in the Cork Office as well as being reproduced as far and wide as the European Environment Agency and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre.

John was a founder member of Mallow Camera Club and the launch of the competition coincided with the first anniversary of John’s untimely death.
The competition images are now in the safe hands of David Noton, David needs a few weeks to scrutinise and the results will be ready in November. Notice of results will be on the SACC website and social media.
