Irish Photographic Federation Newsletter

April 2021

Mag Portrait_IMG_2367
Welcome to the April edition of our Newsletter. Following another very successful Zoom assessment of panels for Licentiateship, Associateship and Fellowship, I’d like to thank Des Clinton, Paul Stanley and Bob Morrison for organising the event. Thanks also to Andy Magan for being our Zoom Master. Thanks to all the Assessors for their expertise and to all the photographers who put panels in for assessment. Congratulations to all of the successful applicants. We shall be running two further Zoom Distinction sittings in May - Licentiateships on Saturday May 22nd and Fellowships on Sunday May 23rd.

Due to the pandemic, we were unable to hold the National Club Championships last year. The 2020/2021 National Club Championships will go ahead this year as a digital only competition. Thanks to Sheamus O’Donoghue and his team for organising the event. The closing date for entries is Friday May 7th. Sheamus has already circulated the information to all clubs. So get working on your entries!

Updated lists of IPF approved judges and lecturers have been circulated to all clubs recently and will be on the IPF website shortly. It is our intention to update the list annually, by the end of May each year. I want to thank the members of the Committee who worked with me to update the lists.

I recognise how difficult the past year has been for all the camera clubs in Ireland. The fact that clubs have not been able to have physical meetings has been difficult for all of us. It’s a credit to the officers and members of camera clubs throughout the country that so many clubs have continued to operate successfully with virtual meetings. It has been an even more difficult time for clubs in areas with poor internet connections which make virtual meetings very challenging. On behalf of the IPF I’d like to thank you all for keeping your clubs going, despite all the challenges you have faced.

The days are getting longer now, the 5km travel restriction has been rescinded and we can now travel within our county or within 20km of our homes. I was able to visit the coast today for the first time in months and it was such an uplifting experience. Maybe it’s time for more of us to get the tripod and filters out of retirement and take up landscape photography.

Now that the vaccination programme is protecting more and more of our population, there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully, we shall be able to get back to some sort of normality later on this year. In the meantime, always remember to maintain social distancing, wear your mask and comply with health requirements, which are in the interest of all of us and our families.

Stay safe,

John Butler

National Club Championships, Digital Only,

May 2021

To All Club Members,

As we are all aware, we were unable to hold the IPF National Club Championships in May 2020 due to the Covid 19 Coronavirus. While we had some hopes then that the crisis would be short-lived, unfortunately that has not been the case.

We have now decided that the competition will be held online this year and all the details including the rules and method of entry are included in the article below.

Sheamus O'Donoghue

Co-ordinator
National Club Championships

1.0 Introduction

  1. The National Club Championship is an inter club competition open to all clubs in good standing with the Federation.
  2. All clubs affiliated to the Federation are eligible to enter, i.e., there are no regional qualifying competitions.

2.0 Conditions of Entry

  1. To compete, a club submits a panel of 10 monochrome digital images and a panel of 10 colour digital images. Clubs may also include two additional images per panel to act as substitutes for disqualified images.
  2. The overall award (Sean Casey Memorial Trophy) will be awarded to the club with the highest combined monochrome and colour panel scores. Clubs who choose to enter only one panel will not be eligible to win the overall award.
  3. All photographs shown on a panel must be the work of registered members of the competing club.
  4. A person may not represent more than one club in the IPF, or in NIPA, in any one year.
  5. A maximum of two images from an individual may appear on a panel.
  6. All images used in the competition shall be the original work of the author. Where the Federation requests proof of authorship, that proof shall be provided without delay.
  7. Images used in a previous National Club Championship are not eligible.
  8. Scoring in the competition shall be on the basis of the official score sheet. Each judge will score independently. Results shall be based on the aggregate scores given by all judges to each competing panel.
  9. The judges’ decision shall be final.

3. Submission of Entries

a. All entries require a completed online Entry Form, to be received by midnight Friday May 7th to allow for sufficient time to upload the entries to a Dropbox on or before the closing date for the competition, midnight Friday May 14th. The link to this entry form is https://irishphoto.wufoo.com/forms/p1a1zi2k09eunpc/ where you will find your Club No. opposite your Club Name.

b. On receipt of the completed Entry Form and payment, the club will receive an email from the Dropbox Co-ordinator with an invite to join your Club’s Dropbox Folder to which your images must be uploaded.

c. There will be an entry fee of €60.00 per club.

d. Payment will form part of the online Entry Form process and can be by PayPal or Bank Transfer. The IPF IBAN will be included in the acknowledgement email which will follow the completion of the Entry Form.

e. All payments by bank transfer should use your Club Name as the reference.

f. Images should subsequently be uploaded to a Dropbox provided to each entered Club by the IPF on or before the closing date for the

g. Images for projected panels should be resized to 3,000 pixels on longest edge, 300 PPI, jpg quality 10. The jpgs should be named as per the file naming in section “h” below and must match exactly the same numbers and sequence submitted on your entry Image 13 on each panel should be the contact sheet for the panel.

(5). The file name of the digital files is an integral part in the running of the software which is being used to display and score the competition images. It is therefore imperative that all images are named using the above naming convention, as it’s this layout is understood by the software that automatically creates the databases used in the projection and scoring of the

(6). If the file names are not configured properly in the individual club Dropboxes, they cannot be integrated into the competition folder until the file names are corrected. This will cause problems for those running the competition and we ask your co-operation in this regard.
