Irish Photographic Federation Newsletter

May 2021

Mag Portrait_IMG_2367
Welcome to the May edition of our Newsletter. After such a long lockdown it’s great to see the country beginning to open up again; the vaccination programme, as well as the great efforts by the vast majority of Irish people to comply with the Government guidelines, are beginning to bear fruit. It has been a very difficult time for the members of our affiliated clubs but there now appears to be light at the end of the tunnel. Great credit is due to the officers and members of clubs who have worked so hard to keep activities going during the pandemic.

As outdoor gatherings, up to a maximum of 15 people, have been allowed since May 10th, I have no doubt that clubs may now begin to organise outdoor activities. Please remember that it is the responsibility of each club to ensure full compliance with Government and HSE guidelines regarding such gatherings. If any club is in doubt, they should contact their insurance broker directly for advice.

With inter-county travel once again permitted, we can now travel to our favourite spots for landscape or other photography. So it’s time to take the camera out, dust it down and get out there taking photos again.

The IPF Council has made a decision that Council meetings will continue via Zoom until the end of 2021. We will then review the situation, in line with Government guidelines, going forward into 2022.

The very successful Zoom distinction assessments will continue next weekend on Saturday May 22nd and Sunday May 23rd. Both sessions will be open, but pre-registration is necessary. If any club members wish to attend, please register by completing the application form on the IPF Website – www.irishphoto.ie. Thanks to Des Clinton and Bob Morrison for all their work organising these sessions. A special word of thanks to all the assessors, and of course, to Andy Magan, our Zoom-Master who organises all our Zoom events.

The closing date for the Digital National Club Championships has passed and entries have been received from twenty five clubs. We are planning to announce the results via Zoom on Sunday June 13th, beginning at 2.00pm. Advice on how to register for the event will be available soon. Thanks to Sheamus O’Donoghue and his team for organising the competition.

As the country continues to open up, always remember to maintain social distancing, wear your mask and comply with health requirements, which are in the interest of all of us and our families.

Stay safe,

John Butler, FIPF, ARPS
President

On the day, the assessors give feedback on the panels and some constructive advice.

Have you got your Name down for the online distinction’s sittings for Licentiate, Saturday 22nd of May and Associates & Fellowships, Sunday 23rd of May?

Interested in Applying for a Distinction?

If you are thinking of going for a distinction, the IPF website is open for applications.

Unlike most years, i.e. pre-Covid, we have not put quotas in place. You may apply at any time, and sitting dates will be arranged as we receive enough applications for full sittings. Assume that the sitting will be online until you hear otherwise. Certainly, if we are able to hold sittings in September these will be online.

If you do go for an online assessment, it is very important to remember that, while the assessment will be made on digital images, you must also provide a set of unmounted A4 prints of your images, which will be examined by a designated print assessor who will advise the online assessors as to print quality.

You should print the images to the standard required for the level you apply for, and should print on the quality of paper you would choose for a “physical” assessment.

Full details of the prints and digital requirements will be sent to all applicants. The A4 size requirement applies to all levels of distinction.

IPF Distinctions Secretary

IPF's National Audio Visual Championships

2021

Note for your diary: The IPF AV Group Committee met recently and it was agreed to hold this virtually this year.

So, put the date in your diary now - October, 16th & 17th. We are also glad to inform you that Alastair Taylor, ARPS, has agreed to be our judge, a multi- award winning sequence maker. He is the Editor of AV News, Treasurer of the RPS AV Group Committee and now a member of the Nominations Committee of the Royal Photographic Society. As well as the IPF AV National Championships, there will be an International Photo Harmony Competition. We will be forwarding more details in due course.

Lilian Webb,
IPF Audio Visual Co-Ordinator

The National Shield 2021

Hi all,

It’s the time of the year again that I start talking about the National Shield 2021. A date for your calendar - we will be holding the National Shield 2021 on Sunday 14th November. I cannot at the moment confirm what format we’ll be having it in, a Zoom presentation like last year or all meeting up in Kilkenny.

When a decision is made, I’ll let you know.

Stay safe,

Black Lives Matter Photography Programme (Border Counties)

Danielle Carragher, Community Engagement Officer with the Northern Ireland National Museums has sent the IPF the following message relevant to those who live in Northern Ireland or the Broder Counties:

'I'm a Community Engagement Officer for National Museums NI working on the Making The Future Programme. I'm currently working on a photography programme around Black Lives Matter and I wondered if your group/networks would be interested in taking part?

The programme will last for six sessions and will be facilitated by Kwame Daniels (CEO Bounce Culture), Macy Stewart (photographer) and myself including a session on showcasing work and exhibitions from a curator at NMNI. It is hoped that work produced will be showcased.

The programme is free and open to those in the North and border counties. Any support in connecting the dots with camera clubs in these areas would be greatly appreciated.'

If you live in Northern Ireland or the Border Counties and are interested in participating please contact Danielle directly at danielle.carragher@nmni.com

FIAP Nature Biennial 2020

The FIAP Nature Biennial took place last year. There are 2 sections, one for colour prints and one for PDI images.

Ireland took part in both sections and we were very pleased with the results.

  • In the PDI section Ireland was in 13th Place.
  • In the Colour Prints section Ireland was placed 6th and was awarded a FIAP Honourable Mention.
  • In addition, Tom Ormond was awarded a FIAP Gold Medal for his print “Frosty Morning” and Jim McSweeney was awarded an APE Silver Medal for his print “Amongst the Bluebells”.
This continues Ireland’s great success at FIAP Biennials and our individual photographer success in International Salons.

Congratulations to all whose work represented Ireland and especially to Tom and to Jim for their fantastic achievements.
