Welcome to the July 2018 newsletter of the Irish Photographic Federation. I hope your all enjoying the fabulous weather that we have been blessed with over the last couple of weeks it certainly came at the right time for the holiday period.
|
|
|
|
|
Speaking of holidays we are taking a little break ourselves from publishing our monthly newsletter and will return with the next edition in October with updates on all the upcoming events. My thanks again to our Public Relations Officer Liam Beattie who has done tremendous work each month compiling and getting the newsletter circulated to all the affiliated clubs.
|
|
A first for the Irish Photographic Federation and something we hope to continue each year going forward was the presentation to the new successful FIAP Distinction Holders at the beautiful Eddie Chandler Gallery (Dublin), a FIAP Exhibition Centre in association with Dublin Camera Club followed by an exhibition of some of the successful images by the Distinction Holders which ran from June 9th to June 30th. My thanks to Dublin Camera Club under the stewardship of their President Eamon Lawless for their hospitality and support. Also my sincere thanks to FIAP Liaison Officer with the IPF Paul Stanley who brought this initiative to Council in 2017 and seen it through with a great presentation followed by the exhibition.

My extended congratulations to all our new Distinction Holders following the IPF Distinction sitting in May in Mullingar who were ratified by the Council at their meeting on June 9th.
|
And finally congratulation to Joe Doyle & Tony Murray who won the two IPF medals at the 80th Annual Competition & Exhibition of AnÓige Photographic Group

Thanks as usual to our Distinctions Secretary Bob Morrison for his work both on the day and dealing with all the applications, to our adjudicators chaired by Des Clinton and to the entire team who work behind the scenes before, during and after each session.

Success in the PSA Projected Image
Interclub Competition
|
Dundalk Photographic Society is very proud to announce they are the overall winners of the Photographic Society of America’s Projected Image Interclub Competition for the second year running. In all, 110 clubs from all over the globe competed in 4 rounds spread over 5 Divisions or groups and we are very honoured to be at the top of Group A again this year.
In addition, huge congratulations go to Frank Condra whose stunning mono image of a boy and Horse was the recipient of an award in the final round.
Awards like these are not won on their own and our current top position is the culmination of 6 years of hard work and dedication by a number of members who must be thanked. Firstly, to all the members who submitted images for selection in the various rounds, we could not have done it without you. Secondly to current and previous members who served on the Selection Committee over the past 6 years, in particular, Denis Whelehan, Colm Kane and Gabriel O’Shaughnessy. Thanks to our current Selection Committee, Dave Martin, Tony McDonnell and Damien O’Malley who spent many hours over the last season pondering images before making their final selections and lastly but by no means least, a huge thank you to Denis Whelehan whose dedication, particularly in relation to the club’s entries to the PSA PID Interclub Competitions over the last 6 years has made this award possible.

The IPF 36th National Audio Visual Championships 2018 will be held on Saturday & Sunday, 20th & 21st October in Aras Chronain Irish Cultural Centre, Clondalkin. Put the dates in your diary now!
As usual, there will be sections for novices, intermediate, club and advanced.
Photo Harmony: In conjunction with the IPF AV National Championships, 2018, we will be holding an Open Photo Harmony AV Competition. The entry fees will be €15.00 for up to two sequences. The minimum length will be 3 minutes and the maximum length 5 minutes. Among the prizes, there will be a prize for the best Irish entry. The definition of Photo Harmony is as follows:-
Photo Harmony is intended to demonstrate skill in the production and visual progression of still images linked to sound. No words or story with a specific beginning, middle and ending are required. The emphasis is on matching the images with appropriate transitions and harmonising them with the sound. Video clips are not allowed in the sequence. The aim is to construct a sequence so that images progress harmoniously in terms of colour or tone and graphic design and that they also harmonise with the sound chosen. It is recommended that the sound and the images start and finish together and that the original ending of the music is preserved rather than an arbitrary fade-out.
Entry forms for both the national and open competitions, rules and conditions have been sent to all known AV workers and will be available on www.irishphoto.ie. Any further queries from ipfavgroup@gmail.com or if you wish to be added to that mailing list to keep you up to date with all matters audio visual. The closing date for entry forms and fees will be 14th September and for the sequences on 28th September.
Judges are Alan & Bev Tyrer from England. both have attended the last two IPF International AV Competitions and have won prizes for many of their sequences. You will have an opportunity to see their work over the weekend.

Roseanne Baume - Exhibition
at the Eddie Chandler Gallery

Roseanne Baume is a member of Dublin Camera Club and was awarded her Fellowship of the IPF in 2017. To celebrate this we are having an exhibition of her panel in the Eddie Chandler Gallery.
It will run from Saturday 7th July to Saturday 4th August and will be open each Saturday from 11am to 5pm.

Pre my ‘big stopper’ obsession, most of my post processing time was spent erasing birds and other moving creatures from my seascapes. Then luck intervened & my glass dashed to the rocks. Thus the rationale for this panel:-
|
To spend as much photographic and post processing time purposely incorporating birds, with the occasional tasteful blur, in my seascapes, as I had spent in avoiding and erasing them out.
|
|
The focus of my panel is seascapes. I am not a nature photographer, but I see bird life as an integral part of the beauty of being at the sea.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Roseanne is a seascapes photographer who enjoys the feeling of space and solitude offered by long expansive beaches, often offering a mirror of subtle light & colour. Waiting for the tides and light to come right, she spends her contemplative and peaceful hours accompanied by a variety of waders and flocks of birdlife.
|
In this panel, she tells the story of some of those moments, from the magnificent murmurs of choreographed starlings in winter which awoke her curiosity and gave Inspiration to sharing her vision with others of how she experiences seascapes, including the birds as part of the scene. Whether it’s the pensive waders, common seagulls or romantic swans which keep her company throughout the frozen grip of winter, all too soon the cavorting duo of kittiwakes signal the upcoming spring and sadly the departure of migrating flocks to even cooler pastures.

“I feel privileged to visit amazing seascapes, seldom with good weather but always accompanied by some form of birdlife. My favorite time is the moment when you hear a rustle of natural life awakening, moving, feeding. When you feel remote from human life but know you are not alone. Who can hear the sound of the curlew and still eraser him out or witness the magnificence of the sea eagle & not trace his flight path. Having avoided capturing wildlife in my scenes for most of my photographic life, I set about the project of purposely incorporating birds in my seascapes, whilst retaining a soft movement and tonality to the creation.

The Dublin Camera Club - Exhibition
|
|
|
Dublin Camera Club is holding its Annual Exhibition, Photo 2018, during July and August.
|
|
The Club, founded in 1945, is the oldest and largest camera club in the country and its annual exhibition puts on show the best work of its advanced and novice members alike.
|
|
Always a visual treat, the exhibition will display up to 240 colour and monochrome prints, as well as digital images. The award winners were adjudicated by three independent expert judges from an entry of almost 600 prints and 300 digital images.
|
|
Operating from its own premises in Camden Street, DCC houses two darkrooms, a fully equipped photographic studio and is an official FIAP Exhibition Centre.
|
|
It provides an extensive programme of events, competitions, workshops and educational courses for its members and for people taking up photography for the first time. It provides a sociable, challenging and supportive environment for anyone interested in developing their skills and enhancing their enjoyment of photography.
|

Opening on 3rd July, the Exhibition will run for the month of July in Dublin City Library, Pearse Street, Dublin 2. (Opening Hours 10am to 8pm).

FIAP Distinctions Update
|
|
The International Federation of Photographic Art is the representative body of Photographic Art. It is active worldwide. Its purpose is the promotion of photographic art in all its aspects and through all kinds of photographic events. It is the only such body recognised by UNESCO.
|
|
|
|
|
One way that this the promotion of photographic art is achieved is by the awarding of distinctions to photographers. These are highly appreciated and sought after by photographers.
|
|
FIAP awards its distinctions to photographers whose work shows faultless and excellent technique and displays a high artistic level.
|
|

Silk Road Youth International Photography Competition (Accredited by FIAP)
|
|
In August 2017, Silk Road Photographic Organization International Alliance was officially founded after a signing ceremony joined by Belt and Road countries (hereinafter referred to as B&R countries) in China. In order to conform to the alliance’s tenet of “inherit the Silk Road spirit, focus on the Belt and Road development, enhance innovation, cooperation and development, adhere to reciprocity and win-win strategy”, and with the aim of practicing the photography exchanges among B&R countries, promoting cross-boundary integration and innovation development of diverse cultures, and strengthening youth photography education and communication in the world, Silk Road Photographic Organization International Alliance specially initiated the Silk Road Youth International Photography Competition in cooperation with Beijing China Millennium Monument World Art Center, Beijing International Art and Photography Foundation, Shandong International Cultural Exchange Center. This competition has been formally accredited by the international federation of photography(FIAP).

IPF Awards
Did you know that the IPF has an honorary award system available?
|
IPF Awards should not be confused with IPF Distinctions. Awards are made to individuals who have served above and beyond at club or higher level over a significant period. To preserve the integrity and high standing of these honorary awards, the number granted each year will be strictly limited. The final decision on granting each Award will be made by the IPF Awards Committee, which shall be comprised of six members of the IPF Council including a secretary elected by the Awards Committee and chaired by the IPF President.
