Newsletter

June/July 2023

Welcome to the June/July edition of our newsletter. The IPF has been very successful in attracting sponsorship for this year’s competitions. The National Photography Competition was sponsored by Bermingham Cameras and the Club Championships were sponsored by Canon. Both events were very successful and congratulations to John Sheridan of Drogheda who was awarded a Nikon camera and lens for the image
of the year in the National Photography Competition and Gabriel O’Shaughnessy of Drogheda who was awarded a Canon camera and lens for the best image in the National Club Championships. Congratulations to Catchlight for once again being the top club in the IPF. It’s a tremendous achievement. This year, in addition to the Sean Casey Trophy, the winning club was also presented with a Canon printer. It is great that we once again have the opportunity to view prints. All who made it to Mullingar could see for themselves the high quality of the prints being produced by members of our IPF Clubs. A special word of thanks to all individuals and clubs who submitted entries to both competitions. It is their tremendous efforts and skill that contribute to the success of Irish photography.

In the most recent FIAP Nature Biennial, Ireland was placed 7th in print and 8th in digital (Hon Mentions). In the FIAP Colour Biennial, Ireland was placed 5th in print (Hon Mnetion) and 2nd in digital (Gold Medal). Ross McKelvey of Catchlight was awarded a Gold Medal for the best portrait in the Colour Biennial digital section. These exceptional results show how Irish photography continues to go from strength to strength.

Don’t forget to enter the forthcoming IPF National Nature and Wildlife Photography Competition. Entry is now open and remains open until August 13th. A special word of thanks to Bermingham Cameras who are sponsoring the competition. In addition to a Gold Medal the best image will receive a €500 voucher. The awards ceremony will take place in Kilkenny on September 16th. The IPF National AV Championships are also also taking place in October with entry closing on Friday September 29th (rules included below).

IPF National Club Championship

Report
The Irish Photographic Federation held, in association with Canon, the National Club Championships 2023 on Sat 20th & Sun 21st May 2023 in Áras An Chontae, Mount St, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. A total of 25 clubs participated this year. The judges this year were Sue O'Connell FIPF EFIAP/d2 ARPS DPAGB BPE5*, Armando Jongejon FRPS and Peter Brisley ARPS.

We were delighted to be partnered up with our sponsors Canon Ireland who sponsored two great prizes, a Canon R8 Camera and a Canon Pixma Pro 200 Printer. Held over two days there was a brilliant display of photographs on both days, with the Monochrome panels on display and judged on Saturday and the Colour panels on the Sunday.

The three judges gave comments at the awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon on all the panels entered, and commended the high standard of photography that was on display. Following the judges comments, the IPF President John Butler, with Canon Representative Marek Biegalski, presented the prizes to both individuals and clubs who won the various prizes. Congratulations to all and especially to Drogheda Camera Club member Gabriel O' Shaughnessy who won best print overall in the Championships 2023.

The running of the event was very much a team effort, thanks to my assistants Liam Beattie and Sheamus O' Donoghue, Ita Pentony and Rory O Connor, The Judges Committee (Des Clinton, Paul Stanley and Gabriel O' Shaughnessy), Bob Morrison, Brian Deering, Gerry Kerr, Mark Gorman (Webmasters) and finally to President John Butler for his support and trust that we would succeed.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Generated Images

Distinction Applications:

AI-generated images are coming increasingly into the news and distinction applicants are required to know the IPF’s position on such images in the context of distinction submissions.

The point of distinction panels is to allow qualified and experienced assessors to decide whether an applicant has the photographic skills that merit recognition as a Licentiate, Associate or Fellow of the IPF. A successful distinction panel is one that demonstrates this ability. It follows that the images in the panel, of whatever level, must be solely the work of the applicant.

Artificially generated images are not actually the work of a photographer. They are images generated by a computer programme - even if the computer operator has keyed in instructions as to what the image should turn out to be. No matter how wonderful or interesting the result, the resultant image is still the work of a computer programme, and not that of the person operating the computer. No doubt this issue will produce a variety of opinions, especially as the already-sophisticated computer technology becomes ever more so, but distinction assessment remains a measure of a person’s photographic ability, and just that.

Intending distinction applicants should note that AI (artificial intelligence generated) images are not permissible in any distinction panel, and that the inclusion of any such image in a panel will cause the panel to be rejected. This applies not simply to the principal subject of an image. Every element of that image must be captured using recognised photographic methods, and must be the original work of the author. This does not preclude processing techniques from being used on original images, but, as is already the case the processing should be used to enhance an image, not alter it unrecognisably. Each distinction applicant must confirm that their images do not include any AI-generated elements.

IPF Competitions:

Similarly, all IPF competitions, whether for individuals or club panels, are judged on photographic ability. For this reason, AI-generated images, whether wholly or partially generated, are not allowed in IPF competitions, and will not be awarded marks in any IPF competition.

In IPF competitions for individuals, entrants must confirm that their images do not include any AI generated elements, partially or wholly. In inter-club competitions, each club must confirm that none of the images in the club’s panel have been wholly or partially generated by AI.

IPF National Nature and Wildlife Photography Competition 2023

The IPF is delighted to announce that the National Nature and Wildlife Competition will be held this year on Saturday 16th Sept 2023. The event will be hosted by Kilkenny Photographic Society with a great day planned for members. This year's competition will be judged by three judges selected by the IPF competition committee. The day will start with a talk by award winning wildlife photographer Gordon Rae MPAGB ARPS, who’s talk last year left the audience wanting more. After this, the viewing and scoring of the IPF competition will take place followed by presentation of awards and announcement of the winner of the overall image - kindly sponsored by Bermingham Cameras. All information is detailed in the poster and also available on the IPF website at www.irishphoto.ie.

FIAP Cloud Collection

FIAP have a collection of images which is hosted in the cloud and can be seen at http://collections.fiap.net.

Each year FIAP selects images from the distinction applications from each country and adds them to this collection. As the number of pictures that FIAP receives every year is very high, it was decided that a limited number of pictures should be placed on the cloud. This restriction is necessary for financial reasons.

Congratulations to those whose images have been included for 2023. They are: Yvonne Crawley, Seamus Mulcahy, Seamus Byrne, Ita Boyle, Ger Mulhall, Claire Sullivan, Mark Taylor, Ita Martin, Helen Hanafin, Gary Loughran, Ned Mahon and Derville Conroy.

FIAP Print Requirements

During the Covid Pandemic and associated lockdown situations worldwide, FIAP temporarily removed the requirement for Print Acceptances in AFIAP and EFIAP Distinction Applications.

FIAP have confirmed that this temporary removal of the requirement will not apply for distinction applications in 2024.

This means that anyone in Ireland who wishes to apply for the AFIAP or EFIAP Distinction in 2024 will have to meet the Print Requirements.

These are
  • For AFIAP you must have at least 4 acceptances with 4 different images in print sections of Salons
  • For EFIAP you must have at least 12 acceptances with 12 different images in print sections of Salons. These can include the 4 used for your AFIAP distinction
In all cases you can also have digital image acceptances for the same images.

The requirement for prints never applied for the other FIAP Distinctions - only for AFIAP and EFIAP. So those applying for any of the other FIAP distinctions do not need to have print acceptances - though it must be said that supporting Print Salons is important so that we can maintain the wonderful tradition of the printed image.
