IPF Audio-Visual Group

Audio-Visual is a branch of photography that brings to life images linked with music, song, poetry, words, sounds, or a combination of these to make up short sequences, of not more than twelve minutes.  It can simply be a series of photos set to music – Photo Harmony; or, it can be a full-blown documentary.

It’s a terrific way of presenting your photos to a wider audience.

It’s very entertaining and it’s great fun!

Think of it as visual story-telling!

The IPF Audio-Visual Group is made up of members of IPF affiliated clubs who have a special interest in visual story-telling.

The audio-visual group was formed shortly after the foundation of the Irish Photographic Federation and has been active ever since. Members are encouraged to promote the production of Audio-Visual sequences within their own club. Workshops and tutorial days can be arranged for clubs by contacting the secretary of the IPF AV Group Committee.

Group membership includes a licence from IMRO which allows the use of copyrighted music in Audio-Visuals produced for competition and private viewing.

Up to the early 2,000’s sequences were made using slide film and tape recordings. One projector for simpler sequences or two or more projectors for more sophisticated sequences. Sound was recorded on tape which synchronised with the projector(s) to progress the images of the sequence. It was quite a complicated process then.

The advent of digital photography made it far easier to create sequences and software such as Pictures to EXE for sequencing and Audacity for sound recording and mixing were made available; these became the software of choice for AVs producers worldwide.

The IPF AV Group Committee is elected from within this group to organise the various activities of the Group. This is a committee of seven with a Chairperson, Secretary & Treasurer along with four “Working Members” all of whom organize the various activities of the group including the organisation of the Annual IPF National Audio-Visual Championship.

Held in October, this event is the highlight of the year for the AV Group. The IPF National Audio-Visual Championship is restricted to IPF club members with entries accepted at non-advanced, Club and Advanced levels. In recent years the Championships have gained an international section which invites entries from the global Audio-Visual Community.

Audio-Visual is a very worthwhile pastime and the camaraderie of the Irish and international community of producers makes it all worthwhile.

Membership fee is €20 per annum.
