Hi Darragh,
When you say “Still Life”, could you give me an example or two as to what would qualify, I’d be grateful.

Donal Byrne
Hi Donal .
Darragh asked me to reply to you.
The definition of Still Life is an inanimate object, but instead of going into a detailed definition why not visit http://fineartamerica.com/art/photographs/still+life/prints?page=1 , which has many pages of examples of still life images. Please ignore some of the images such as landscape type photographs which will not suit this theme. Just think inanimate (or doesn’t move).
If you need any further information or advice please email me at denis.whelehan@gmail.com.

Hi Donal,
I omitted to mention to you that viewing these images is meant to give you ideas for a photograph but should not be copied in their present form.
Best regards,
Denis
Hi Denis;
Would it be possible to put up a brief definition of each theme?
Also is there open mono & color sections?
Regards
Paul
Does the IPF encourage the promotion of film photography.
Pete,
The IPF encourages all formats of photography, however the demand for traditional formats has fallen and currently there are no competitions that have slide entries due to lack of demand.
Some clubs within the IPF still have darkrooms like Dublin Camera Club and An Oige.

Darragh
Q: can you give me an example or two as to what would qualify as Still Life?
A: it’s like the photos in a certain place up on Fine Art America, except for the ones that it isn’t like …
🙁
Just to echo some of the other comments. I often find the IPF Leadership who have been involved for decades don’t always take into account that not everyone has their experience. It would be helpful (and probably better for potential entries) if the themes were better explained and maybe with some previous IPF work that would qualify in that category. I am thinking particularly of Irish Environmental Portraiture.
It might also be good to get an idea of what pictures over time are being considered ffor the competitions because it’s often a panel in the end and it’s often the same photographers filling the panel. They often have the same type (as in similarish) of photograph so there must be some collaboration of ideas that not everyone is included in.
Thanks for the info regarding the themes. I looked up the FIAP site and notice that even years deal with colour and projected images and odd years monochrome and nature. So for Still Life for example the next round of regional competitions is the only chance to enter for 2014. After that the Theme is Monochrome, Nature Prints and Nature Projected. Is my interpretation correct? Thank you.
Hi Marie,
Thank you for your query. At the moment, FIAP is out of sync with the statement on its website which you have referenced regarding which biennials take place in odd years and which in even years. Next year the biennials are Monochrome Print, Nature Print and Nature Projected. In 2015, the biennials are Colour Print and Projected Image.
Please take a look at the following two articles posted under the ‘Competition’ menu at the top of the website for further information. I hope they clarify the situation for you.

FIAP Biennials
Note that the FIAP article has links to the two panels which won Ireland gold at recent biennials. Other recent panels may be located by typing ‘biennials’ into the search box and browsing through the results.

Thanks Niamh for that. It is clearer now. So it is Colour Print etc. in odd years with the themes mentioned in the list and I expect 2015 is the cut off point. This makes a big difference. So now I understand all the themes listed apply in the regional and other rounds up until each theme is closed. I think I was a bit confused and the years mix up did not help. Congratulations to the contributors to the winning panel you mention. Inspirational!
It is a long time since I properly browsed the FIAP site so I will certainly look at recent panels.
Hi Marie,
That’s correct. After a biennial is completed, new themes will be selected which will be active for the next two years to build a collection of images to choose from for when it comes around again. The website will be updated to reflect same when that does occur.
