Results of 2017/2018 IPF Nature Photographer of the Year Competition

February 17, 2018 by Niamh Whitty 1 Comment

The national finals of the IPF Nature Photographer of the Year Competition 2017/2018 took place on Saturday February 17th 2018 at The Talbot Hotel in Carlow.

We are delighted to announce the overall winner of the 2017/2018 competition as Dominic Reddin (IPF President) from Mountmellick Camera Club whose stunning image ‘Waterrail’ was a clear overall winner with the judges.

Prior to being announced as the overall winner IPF President Dominic Reddin sent us this letter to publish.  After being announced, he was speechless so we’ll catch up with him in the March newsletter to find out the story behind his winning image.

“As events go, the Nature Photographer of the Year event held today in The Talbot Hotel Carlow was up there with one of the finest I’ve ever been at in many years. The hotel, the room layout, sponsors exhibition area all added to what was building up to a great event.

The standard of images from photographers from right across the country was again very high and proves that photographer is still very alive and well in this country.

A packed room watched and waited diligently as scores were announced and the anticipation and goodwill among the large crowd was evident to be seen.

These events don’t just happen without great and well detailed preparation and again that was clear to see when you saw how well the event ran. The National Coordinator Darragh Sherwin and his back room staff including Ita Martin, Niamh Whitty, Joe Doyle, Tony Murray and Brian Deering certainly pulled out all the stops to ensure this event ran smoothly and efficiently.

The support of IPF PRO Liam Beattie and his colleagues in Carlow Photographic Society cannot go unnoticed either. Together, their team contributed to a very successful day overall. Thanks also to the staff at The Talbot Hotel, especially Amanda and Claire who have been incredibly helpful to us all day.

Sincere thanks to our three specialist nature judges Karen Berry, Mark Sedgwick and Des Connors for their hard work all day.

Well done all, terrific day and congratulations to all the winners.”

This year, we were thrilled to welcome four sponsors to the finals weekend and would like to express our thanks for their very generous sponsorship.  All four are in attendance throughout the weekend, so please be sure to stop by and chat with them.

Ah dear. An image taken from a pay and display hide where the Water Rail is lured and baited. This shows no skill from a wildlife photographer. It undermines the hard work pit in by real wildlife photographers who actually photograph wildlife with the use of fieldcraft skills. These images are ten a penny now,
